    In today’s episode I’m replacing our old worn out fire pit with a new modern concrete one. We picked up the fire pit as a kit from a local concrete centre here in Southern Ontario. The kind of place that makes custom concrete pieces for the yard - think bird baths, statues, fireplaces etc.
    They had different options like the round one we got as well as square and rectangle. It comes with the white bricks and the metal insert (comparable options linked below). The only other material we used was a layer of bricks at the bottom from the old fireplace. These were just basic garden edging bricks and you could substitute with another kind you might have around.
    The cool thing is if you build these things right you can greatly eliminate smoke which makes it so much more enjoyable to sit around and the neighbours appreciate it too :) I talk about how this works near the end of the video (EDIT: and will be making a follow up video).
    I plan to do a few upgrades here on our little homestead and add more options to cook outside like a small pizza oven and wood burning cook top. We’re all about making our place more “self-reliant” in any ways we can. Stay tuned for future episodes on that.

    I love u guys! I have a fawn too. She is my Daisy girl. Dobermans are amazing & Goofy 😂. U literally give up ANY private time with them LOL. They are such family dogs. My husband is military & currently on deployment. But when he talks to Daisy on speakerphone she goes crazy! She misses her daddy as much as we miss him. He always gives her orders & tells her to protect us till he gets home. Daisy is so loving/protective & important to our family. Not to mention absolutely gorgeous. She just turned 2 years in August. That’s a nice looking fire pit but how is it smokeless where is the air coming through two tiny little gaps and then how does he get through the ring

    • @JRSLife
      @JRSLife  2 года назад

      Thanks so much and thanks for checking out our video 🙌 Basically it greatly reduces the smoke by managing the flow of air and smoke throughout the fire itself. When the fire is burning, the walls heat up and the hot air rises through the gap between metal ring and the concrete bricks. The air then exits the wall cavity through the line of holes around the rim. Hopefully that makes sense 😁

      Nothing’s wrong with the design 😄 there’s multiple ways to construct “smokeless” fire pits. This fire was a larger than we’d usually make and moreso for a fun video. It’s worked fantastic for 2 seasons now. Very happy with it and have also had neighbors and other viewers try the same thing and they are also happy with the results.

    I wanted to like this video however, the hardest parts with any of the "smokeless" pits is sufficient air flow through the bottom and seeling the top with the topper, both achieved with the pavers. Since your entire video uses blocks nowhere to be found it's kind of hard to upvote this.

    • @JRSLife
      @JRSLife  2 года назад +5

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the honest feedback Chris! In this design the spacing between the white round concrete bricks, and between the bricks and the metal insert, helps create airflow which dissipates the smoke. When the fire is burning, the walls heat up and the hot air rises through the gap between metal ring and the concrete bricks. The air then exits the wall cavity through the line of holes around the rim. I wasn't sure how that would play out in real life, but we've used it a ton and it really is virtually smokeless 😀 I'm sure different designs also work as long as the airflow is right.

    • @rronmar
      @rronmar 2 года назад +3

      Larger the pit the less primary air is needed. It does look like it doesn’t have much secondary air which really helps it burn smokeless. Since we didn’t really see it burning other than in teepee blowtorch mode, it is kinda hard to gauge how smokeless it really is. Since there does not appear to be a seal at the top of the ring to help force the heated secondary air out over the fire to work on the smoke, it is relying on the combustion air being pulled in and over the top edge to help force the heated air out over the fire. It looks like you did meet and exceed the first rule of smokeless fire pits, which is fill them with fuel. That takes care of 90% of the work as the fire is close enough to the side wall to reflect heat back into and help superheat the core fire which breaks down most of the smoke… an 18” fire in a 36” pit will have a real hard time burning smokeless… haven’t ever seen CC rings like that, but haven’t looked either. I make my double walled pits from steel:) it looks good:)

    • @JRSLife
      @JRSLife  2 года назад +3

      @rronmar Great points! Thanks so much for explaining more in depth! So helpful/awesome to have different people chime in here. We've had some smaller fires as well that are smaller than the height of the top of the fire pit and it performed well on those too. The way the insert is sitting on the bricks at the bottom (underneath the more decorative bricks) as well as the holes in the white decorative bricks, seems to allow enough airflow though to control the smoke. We'll get a follow up video in the works to show it in some different fire settings. Also cooking on it :)

    • @LH-tc6so
      @LH-tc6so 2 года назад +1

      I didn't see holes on the top of the rim insert. You mentioned they were there. Would it help to drill holes on the bottom of the insert or is that not necessary?

    • @JRSLife
      @JRSLife  2 года назад

      Some designs do have holes at the top of the rim insert but with this design the rim is resting on the older bricks on the bottom allowing some airflow there and also with the small spaces between the newer white cement bricks. From what I've seen, different designs have different ways to allow the airflow and effectively reduce the smoke. This one has more of a minimalistic look. Depending on your setup it might help to add holes. We also find that this design works especially well as the fire reaches a certain temperature. The hotter it is, the less smoke there is. I hope that's helpful :)

    • @JRSLife
      @JRSLife  2 года назад

      Sure there's a bit of smoke - I'm not Chris Angel! haha - but for that size of a fire it wasn't much. The idea is that it greatly reduces the smoke so you don't get smoked out if you are sitting around it. More enjoyable to use. It's also not the easiest thing to capture at night in low light, but hopefully it's still helpful to those looking to reduce the smoke from the fire pit :)

    • @buck4490
      @buck4490 2 года назад +1

      @@JRSLife Where did this design come from? There is no way it has enough hot air coming in the pit at the top of the ring. That hot air is what generates the secondary burn that burns the particles in the smoke. You need a larger opening at the base to get the air flow.

    • @JRSLife
      @JRSLife  2 года назад

      The way we have the metal ring sitting on the older bricks at the bottom allows air through, plus the spaces between the big round concrete bricks on the side seems to allow plenty of air flow. We’ve got another video in the works to show how it’s working for smaller fires too 🔥

    There is nothing about this that makes a fire pit smokeless. To be considered smokeless, you need ventilation all around to push smoke back towards the center or ignite the smoke. There is none of that here and the tiny cracks you're talking about would not direct air horizontally. As it warms up, it would rise and escape. This is just a normal fire pit.
    Think about a candle. It creates no smoke because it always has a full burn. Only when you blow it out that it doesn't have a full burn and creates smoke. Without having proper air flow below the fire and all around pushing air back towards the center, you'll never truly have a full burn in a fire pit. The fire will also naturally always burn less hot than with proper air flow.

      We’ve got a video in the works that’ll show in more detail how this fire pit works. We’ve been using it for over a year now and it works great 👍 You can get a *smokeless* effect from a variety of designs. Do you have a smokeless pit as well?

      @@JRSLife I have a normal fire pit and one of my friends has the big solo stove. When you can experience both, you truly see the difference in how hot the fire is and how it dances and burns everything to ash 4-5x more quickly when it has proper air flow. Other factors for smoke is how seasoned the wood is, if you have hardwood vs softwood, as well as if you have wood like pine that naturally create a lot more smoke. If you take the worst combination in the solo stove, you still get less smoke and a hotter fire than a normal fire pit with the best combination.

    It's a nice fire pit, but it isn't smokeless...

      That’s right, it’s *smokeless* (ie greatly reduced smoke for average size backyard fires)

    In what sense is this diy?

      Because I took my old fire pit out and I installed the new fire pit! Hopefully that answers your question?
