The South Fork Trail is one of the more popular routes to the San Gorgonio Mountain summit, and for a good reason. You have to put some work in on the climb, but overall the gradients are steady and reasonable. As you wind up toward the summit, you’ll get postcard views of the San Bernardino high line of peaks, views down to Mill Creek, and then, of course, the epic views from the summit, the highest point in southern California. Overall this is a classic hike.

The hiking guy is my #1 inspiration for getting me into the outdoors!
Ahh thank you 🙏👍
@@Hikingguyhow many hours was your hike? I’m planning to do this trail soon…… your video really is helping me to have an idea of the trail 😊 thank you 😉

Did the "9 peaks" trail...I was about 12. We made the San Gorgonio summit , and then camped off toward the other end of the range, where we were supposed to be picked up after two more days. That night, the drought ended, and we got about 2 feet of snow. The rest of the trip was slogging up a peak, and tobogganing down the other side. No one dropped out, though a few of us got frostbitten. (Me),
This is my favorite route up this mountain.
my fav trailhead to that peak!
Thank you so much Cris!
You are super Awesome!
I love all of your videos!
I hiked this trail back in 1995 .
Another great video. Really like the mapping at the end to get the bird’s eve view. Your content has prompted quite a few hikes for me. Thank you so much!
Awesome, thank you! 👍👍
Did this exact route in the snow. Challenging but quite beautiful . The map zoom at the end is helpful
Oh man, yea, it's a whole other ballgame in the snow. I used to do much more winter hiking when I was younger but now head to the desert when the snow hits.
We are doing this hike tomorrow at 5 am 💗💗💗
Thank you for sharing it all
Backpacked from Poop Out Hill parking area (now you hike to there) to Dry Lake - Summit - Dollar Lake back in the day. We started late (Friday after school) so it got dark and we slept along the trailside well below Dry Lake. Next day, hiked from there to Dry Lake to the summit and down to Dollar Lake. We were young strong kids in our late teens living at sea level so it was pretty tough going but great. Also hiked it when a younger kid staying at YMCA Camp Osceola near Jenks Lake. Back then I only knew it as Mt Grayback.
Gotta admit that it looks a lot different after the fire. The trail from the San Gorgonio Wilderness sign used to be really shaded.
Hi Osceola, this is Camp JCA. Back in the 60's-70's, when there were 22 organization camps in Barton Flats, we used to hike from Poop Out - Slushy Meadows - Dollar Lake - Saddle, turn left and hit Greyback with 100 campers, 20 staff, all in one day from 6am to 6pm. Those were the days, my friend!
Thanks!
Big big thank you!!!!!
GOOD STUFF! As always Chris! Appreciate you and your very informative work!
Nice video
Good morning Cris, I hope you had a nice weekend. Thank you for another great video. Question, for running which route South Fork or Vivian Creek would you suggest going up to the San Gorgonio summit? I think the Fish Creek one was the route you mentioned you have to drive on a dirt road for 7 to 8 miles, I don’t have the car for that, but when I do go with a friend that has it off-road vehicle, I’d like to do that. Route to the summit as well. Thank you kindlyfor your insight and great content and experience.
I like South Fork better - not as tough (but still tough).
@@Hikingguy thank you very much for your reply and suggestion Cris, then I will go for the South Fork route:) Hope you have a good day.
You didn't show the first 200+ yards which are quite steep and slippery. Maybe you were concentrating only on the mountain but the first mile has some nice views as well. The part of the cabin hidden from the trail has been used as a toilet for many hikers. The stench can be overpowering.
I like your videos but this one might be outdated following all the rain and snow we got this winter. Are there downed trees, boulders or other obstacles on the trail? Any updates by the forest service?
Yea I'm just one guy, I can't shoot hundreds of new videos every year. Check out the SGWA website for latest info, link is in my guide on the website.
Hoping to do this hike this weekend assuming the Forest Closure is lifted on the 17th as currently scheduled...fingers crossed! Any recent updates on water sources along the trail? Planning to camp 1 night at Dry Lake.
Haven't been there in a month or so, not sure of the status. I would go to the SGWA forums and ask. Maybe a ranger has been around. Dry Lake is great but is def all dry now. You might just want to bring all the water that you need.
Enjoyed your video. Any idea of roun-trip time for this hike?
Details in link under video
Great trail report! Curious, have you ever ventured down to The Tarn? If so, what's it like down there? I've seen it so many times over the years, but have resisted temptation to go off-trail, so far :)
Good question, and I have not ventured down there either. Might give it a try this summer. You can def see animal / use trails around it.
Do you have a recommendation for the best time of year to do this hike?
Summer when the snow is gone - Aug is usually great.
@@Hikingguy thanks for the info!
Thanks for vid! Plan on doing this in the next few weeks as an overnighter. Where would there be water sources?
Check out the link in the description
Is there places to fish on the trail?
How long did it take you from parking lot to peak and then back down to the parking lot?
On this day I was moving -7 hrs - but usually a little longer > hikingguy.com/hiking-trails/best-la-hikes/south-fork-trail-to-san-gorgonio-mountain/
So would u say this hike is easier than the Vivian Creek Trail?!
Yup
I’m having a hard time filing out this itineraries, can you help
It’s easier than Vivian Creek but a few miles longer and less traffic.
Slushy Meadows?
What peak do you recommend? Jepson, Little Charlton, Charlton, or Dobbs?
Jepson
Is the trail well mark?
Yes
What’s the starting point
Please take a look at the guide in the link for all the info
BTW, when did you do this hike because there is no water on the trail as of July 2021.
July 21st, last water in the small spring by the trail right by the Dollar Lake spur
Nice! I did the South Fork to Gorgonio Summit via Dry Lake route on July 10 and the only water on that side (after the creek crossings) was at Lodgepole Springs.
@@Hikingguy is the spring you’re talking about (near the dollar lake spur) visible from the trail? I’ve seen reports of a spring down in the rocks by dollar lake also. I’m wondering if there are two different springs - going to do an overnight backpack to Dollar this weekend. Thanks for the informative video!
@@rhymeswithtoots8058 it's just before the spur, off the trail to the right, and visible (when active) - here's what it looks like with a loc > www.pic2map.com/hivdxv.html
I feel scared on the bears if doing solo hiking there.
You don't have to worry about bears here, it's rare that you'll see one and if you do chances are it will run away.
CHUBZIES SMASHBURGERS!!!! 🫡🖖🏽🙏🏼
HikingGuy why haven't you been uploading recently?
My last Timberline guide took a long time to get together. Hoping to get back in the regular groove shortly.
okay
Is there alot of people im going next week but im not the best at navigating im only thing is getting lost on the way back if there kinda alot of people i can just follow someone down
It's covered in snow - best to wait until next summer and be confident in your skills, this is not a hike to wing it on
