It took me so many times to get; so many days to figure out. My guitar teacher actually at one point became the Whiplash guy. But I learned that piece and came to love that piece. So on the day of performance I played that piece like my life depended on it (because it kinda did, I really didn't wanna be decapitated by a cymbal).
Because in the film, Andrew was practising intense drum rudiments at high speed (like double time swing) not this fairly undemanding song. And yes I know you are being sarcastic but still, I feel this is overlooked :)

traditional grip let's you play with your arm not crumpled up when hitting hi hats plus more rolls and awesome chops. but the chops part depends on your skills.
