About 6 months ago I built a partscaster guitar from a Kramer Focus found in a pawn shop for $48. Solid body and good neck. The only hardware I kept was the jack plate. I ordered a matched set of 3 Planet Tone Alnico II PUPs. Took some weeks but worth the wait. I have a 2000 Fender American Natural Ash Strat as a comparison. In reality, the Fender Strat sits in a case in the closet mostly because the sound is thin and quacky for my taste. The Alnico II makes for a more mellow and chiming tone in the single coils without the sharp quack and better mid-range tones. Several friends who have played both side by side agree with my assessment. Now looking for a better set of 'buckers to add to a recently acquired 2000 Washburn HB35. I had gone to the Planet Tone site and saw these pickups and your name. Bravo. I have been one of your subscribed viewers for a while and enjoy your videos. Congratulation on these, they sound awesome. After listening to you play these they are likely top of the list now for that upgrade.
Well done. Sounded great. I could sit around the house arpegiating chords in that middle position all day. Two suggestions. 1. If you got a single neck coil, ya gotta demo something Hendrixy 2. If demoing a neck humbucker, I always like to hear them played in the middle strings around the 12th fret to see if they make those Les Paul nasally tones. I personally like that sound, but others may not. Be helpful to know if pups do that. The chicken pickin thing on the bridge was brilliant. No need to hold on to a tele now.
I already have 3 PRSi and was looking at one of those disgustingly high priced core Holcombs floating around, but now the Grissom is moving into the picture. I love the tone you get with that no matter what pickups are in it.
I use planet tone 1969 voodoo specials in my strat. However my neck pickup on my strat is a red rhodes velvet hammer( which I really like). Leaving the middle and bridge voodoo specials in . really cool tone.
Very nice sounding pickups (and playing) ! You are right about the frequency of a guitar: in some instances, it can sound dead, in others it can shine, depending on lots of factors. Pickups, but also strings, pickup height, string guage, etc. I would hesitate to change stock pickups on a DGT (although it is reversible). I did experience quite a few sets of strings until I found the right ones: Duesenberg 10-50. Those really enhance all the character of the guitar and you get all sorts of overtones, harmonics and sustain that you don't get with others. My 2 cents...
Subscribed. Please advise on if you did any protyping with different degrees of wax potting? I am under the impression that the original PAF pickups didn't have potting(?) which may have lead to that borderline microphonic tone that your signature pickups seem to have as well. I love this sound.
This sounds great through a set of good headphones. I like the parts where you get a little twangy and chicken pickin-y. I bet this guitar is fun and easy to record with.
Hey Lucas, I'm finally just about ready to pull the trigger on one. They have a 20% off sale at the moment, so it's the best time for me. I want a very vintage woody tone, kind of like the way the old aged 57 pickups sound like as the magnets have gotten weaker over time. Would you say go with these, then I have the option of a good single coil split? The blues heritage ones? The 57 warmer ones? Or the 59 brighter ones? I believe you have installed and played all of them. What's your personal favorite? Thanks in advance!
I may well have to buy a pair of these! Seriously!? A PAIR of amazing sounding humbuckers for ONLY $180 (usually custom shop humbuckers of this quality are $300+/$350+)!? That is amazing!!!
Honestly? I bought a set of this some time ago and I've been hesitant to change the stock pickups in my PRS s2.. recently though I played a show and the pickups were just not cutting through and the tone was really muddy and bland! I proved my point by changing guitars to my Paul's guitar se and the sound just CUT and I was happy! So I think this is happening soon! I've also been considering the PRS metal-57/08 combo! I really want to give this set a good try though! Thanks for these videos!
This set checks a lot of boxes for us PRS tone nerds! Are you using the original DGT wiring to split coils? or some other variation? -- PRS alone does this 4 different ways, and none of them are a true coil-tap.
Yes, this is using the stock DGT coil split wiring. I basically just dropped these pickups in without changing anything in the original harness. Jose at Planet Tone makes some great stuff :)
I've replayed this vid countless times, I love it! Could you please share what your in-between pickup settings are? Are they inner coils, outer coils, or a different combo? Thank you!
When the humbuckers are split I ***think*** they are utilizing the inner "slug" coil, because he wound the coils offset a little. That would be a question for Planet Tone though. Of course when the switch is in the middle and the push-pull is down, it's just the 2 humbuckers both on in parallel.
Hey Lucas, you have a link to Heather's channel in the description or whatever it's called under the video. Anyway, clicking on it says there is no such channel so you might want to either correct the link or remove it. The second Instagram link also says the channel doesn't exist.
How do you think these will sound in a les paul? In general I think a prs even with same pickups doesn't sound as warm and thick/full as a lp with same pickups. So I'm considering getting some planet tone pickups and it's between the blues heritage set which I like for its woody vintage sound but I love this one for its clarity and brightness without being too harsh. Most my pickups are various versions of a 57 or alnico II PAFs in my about 15 lps. So this would be a great change, just wonder if it will be just a tad darker in a lp, which is fine just don't want it too much like a regular 57 PAF type
This particular PRS DGT is very warm and dark naturally, which is why I picked it. I would say this is a pretty good representation of what they would sound like in a Les Paul actually. My pickups are pretty open and clear, with a very defined bottom end.
Hey Lucas, I know these are your signature series pups, but my question is I was getting ready to purchase the full throttle bridge and the 78 Pasadena neck. I know u love those pups too, do you recommend ur pups or the other ones? Their going into a PRS SE24. Let me know I really appreciate ur input. Jerry
Both sets are great. My set is sort of based off the FT/78, but a little more balanced and with more top end. I usually recommend the 78' neck to clear up a muddy singlecut 22 fret neck spot, but a 24 would probably sound great with my set. Unless you are doing strictly metal, I'd go for the Statera for overall versatility.
@@LucasFowler thanks Lucas, I play pretty much the same stuff you do. I'm a huge alter bridge fan.. and yes creed too. Lol mark is amazing. OK I think I'm gonna give your set a try ill keep you posted on my thoughts.. Thanks again for the quick response..
@@jerrycarroll9068 hey bro, how those statera pups sound ? I'm tremonti fan as well and was thinking of getting full throttle and pasadena 78 set but thought stateras might be to closer to the vintage feel and not midrange punchy modern metal feel
@@Hmmm7512 I called Jose at planet tone and he recommended I go with the FT in the bridge and a pup called blues something can’t remember the exact name. I have a Gibson Les Paul that I like a lot but I'm looking at buying a Greco single cut, what can you tell me about the playability, quality, and the guitar as a hole? I know you like them but just wanting to know what I might be getting into. Thank you
For me the sweet spot is between 1977 and 1979, the Greco EG800 or above(EG900, EG1000, etc). Those have all solid construction with nitro finishes, fret nibs, they really feel like "old Gibsons". Highly recommend them, though to get a good price you'll probably need to buy one from a Japanese seller. I've bought several guitars from this seller, he is very nice and does a good job with packing and shipping: reverb.com/shop/shen-ye-s-gear-outlet

I have a pair of Headrush FRFR112's that I like a lot, however they are about $300 a piece. I would go with one of those provided you aren't after a stereo set up :)
I've gotten ultra picky about split sounds over the years. Jose nailed the tone of the pickups, but part of the magic of the split sound is the way that PRS wires the split function in the DGT(and I think some of the other models now). They use resistors to bleed back in some of the other coil into the sound while still sounding single-coil-y. Diagram: www.prsguitars.com/documents/dgt_2017.pdf
Lucas Fowler It looks like the resistor is inline with the pup to make the split pup see the correct value. Really glad I got you guys hooked up. I enjoy seeing you use Planet Tone stuff.

Wow, that clean that bridge has an almost Rickenbacker quality.
On clean sounds it chimes beautifully, but then when you add drive it thickens up just like a humbucker. Its a miracle of engineering!

That mid position tone is really sweet. Nice open airy depth to it indeed. Reminds me somewhat of Eric Johnson's tone.
