      In the beginning, you see him play both sides with his "friends" and Sejanus when the other is out of earshot.
      Later, you see that he doesn't grieve for the dead classmate like the others do, and finishes an essay that some (i.e. the dean) might consider pathological in one night.
      You then see his lack of empathy to help anyone but Lucy Gray, his ward, even if it is hidden by youthful naivete.
      He doesn't hesitate to cheat and lie through all his problems, and when in the arena, demonstrates a lack of care for his supposed friend, as well as an unnecessary amount of brutality against the district kid he kills.
      Later when he is on the train, you can see Sejanus being happy to be with him, but from what I recall Snow never showed anywhere near that level of happiness until he saw Lucy Gray, his prized songbird, alive again.
      And then in the third act he starts to break down for all to see

    I’m really glad Jeremy brought up the reason WHY some movies have bad CG; underpaid and overworked VFX artists with impossible deadlines and execs being satisfied with the barest bones possible shots to be released in the movie is a LARGE reason why CG in movies has decreased in quality over the years.
    Most of the time people usually blame the directors and VFX artists for making “shitty CGI” and don’t understand the real reasons behind why things turn out the way they do in movies

    • @samzilla567
      @samzilla567 10 месяцев назад +33

      That's why the Marvel VFX team wants to unionize. I can't imagine being told your team has to make up nearly a thousand VFX shots and you have less than a year to finish.

    • @mathsalot8099
      @mathsalot8099 10 месяцев назад +21

      I would also sometimes blame the directors because you can only work with what you are given. If the director does not compose his shots well and expects the VFX artists to "fix it in post," that's a recipe for disaster. VFX shouldn't "fix" anything, but enhance it. If they have to fix it, that means you failed in your job.

    • @RyoMassaki
      @RyoMassaki 10 месяцев назад +5

      @@mathsalot8099 That's not entirely true. You can do a lot in post very easily that is very hard to do in reality or what takes a lot of time and effort (or money) or simply is very dangerous.
      It gets problematic if the director has no clue what can be done and uses the ability to fix something as the default mode of operation. A director can make it easier for post, but post can also make it easier for an director.
      Overall the biggest problem is bad management of the production and since VFX sits at the end of the production pipeline, they have to fix everything out of necessity (and then get all the blame if it doesn't work out).
      So I would blame the producers especially, the directors and the writers before I would start blaming the VFX teams.

    • @mathsalot8099
      @mathsalot8099 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@RyoMassaki agreed. When I said VFX is to "enhance," I meant the shots you cited that are too expensive, dangerous or straight up impossible. Those aren't "fixing" a bad production. I think we are on the same page, though (hense why I said "sometimes" the director, not always or even often.) The problems generally go from the top down.
      Edit: Top meaning the Studio

    • @tjjordan4207
      @tjjordan4207 10 месяцев назад +7

      Another big reason is that the people behind CGI will get done with their work or are still in progress of doing it, and then the studio comes back demanding changes be made, sometimes even having to redo the entire sequence. Why? Because the actual filmmakers or higher ups don't know what they want. Gone are the days when they have everything planned out ahead of time before shooting, which made it easier for the people behind CGI to do their work properly.

    Agree with a lot except for Rachel and Lucy Grey and the third act. She is a much more ambiguous character and very different than Katniss, she is a performer and you never know how faithful she is and what is real. I think Rachel portrayed that stellar as I could literally see these conflicting emotions (love and mistrust, terrified and reassuring) before she said the lines that telled them.

    • @SabrinaRina
      @SabrinaRina 10 месяцев назад +10

      Minor, ambiguous spoilers I guess:
      My mom always told me, don't trust someone saying outright, trust me. So when there's a discussion of trust, the characters involved all seem like try hards despite very different delivery, against possibly untrustworthy feelings. The zealous matter-of-fact versus choked up only for you, admissions.
      I imagine if Lucy wanted to see Snow again she could have. But I imagine she was relieved and thought maybe he'd leave her be after a bit of time. Maybe on stage that wasn't joy but panic. She can be read any which way as a girl threatened and finding this man with some power also has presented an infatuation with her. For her life why would anyone blame her playing reciprocation? And if she did feel for him, why would anyone blame her for growing fearful and fawning at that point?
      Haven't read the book, just wasn't attracted to reading Snow's perspective, but the film was good as a general history to the trilogy. And it was a really good story of a person adapting to the tools around them, arena and not, to survive.

    As someone who is a big fan of this book in the series, the ending was a little bit rushed there as well. I will say that you get a lot more out of Lucy Gray’s character if you pay attention to the lyrics of her songs because it dwells more into her backstory and her current feelings about a situation. This is obviously really hard to do on first viewing with the vocal changes and fast speeds of some of singing scenes. No I think this movie is perfect and fits all the scenes to be exactly what was in the book. It’s Snow’s perspective so yes he’s going to see things differently than it might have actually happened. But Lucy is accurate to the way she was written. And she’s not forgettable once you see what she did to Snow but she also was basically written out of their history so she’s not going to be written to be some major character like Katniss who will forever live in the minds of others. She’ll be a character that you know and you know what parts she was involved in for creating a tyrannical ruler but she isn’t actually forgettable. Lucy Gray and Snow created the world Katniss grew up in so she’s just as impactful and important as any other character. And I think people should read the book before they complain about the songs because if they actually read the book they’d know she does break out in song a lot, she’s a performer, part of a band, she expresses herself through song. And it’s a way of showing how she manipulates too. Like a snake charmer, she uses her songs to charm the people she wants to use. She charmed snow and made him believe that she was in love with him. She charmed the capital to think she was a girl in need. She’s smart and cunning and it shows through her songs. Much like Snow uses words to manipulate and gets close to people only to stab them in the back later on. “Nothing You Can Take From Me” was purposely sung at the reaping, the whole song should have been sang as it happened in the book but it was her act of defiance and her first attempt to manipulate the way people saw her. But since I didn’t read the book I don’t know that and the explanations are barely touched on and sometimes in the form of song which is hard to hear. So all of these emotions you’re describing we weren’t shown like we were shown in the first hunger games movie. cannot disagree more about Lucy-Gray, she was stellar in my opinion. A consious actor trying her hardest to survive, and then realising that shes fallen in love with a man she cannot trust. We see her from Snows perspective. We see the facade. We never get a scene where we see her without her guard up because Snow fails to ever win her trust. In my opinion if youre paying attention you can see all of this written between the lines of her performance. Its incredible, or at least I thought so.

      I believe Snow saw Lucy how she wished to be seen and she truly thought there was good In him in the song “pure as the driven snow” she sings You’re as pure as the driven snow, you saw the Ideal me and yes that’s the real me. After she sings the song she immediately goes and chases Snow cause she can tell something is wrong, I don’t think she would have went after him mid performance if she didn’t at least trust and love him a bit but after he shoots the mayors daughter the true testing of Trust begins and goes down hill from there to snow not telling her he was gonna leave to his friends hanging and to him saying he killed three. anyhow I find all very sad

      ***SPOILERS coming...*** This is the right take. Also, as @SabrinaRina wrote, it started as a long con. Lucy was a little too flirty and charming with Snow in the beginning. It seemed like she was playing him from the start. But as time went on, she started having real feelings for him even if she was conflicted about whether or not she could fully trust him. The point where he shoots Mayfair in the back is what changed everything, or tipped things over to distrust. Lucy saw a different side of Snow, what he was capable of. With him, the ends justify the means if it means he can survive another day (what if he's capable of shooting Lucy, the last loose end?). Finally, Lucy's last name explains the type of character she is. She lives in the "Gray" area. You don't really know where she stands, her feelings are meant to be ambigous. I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed this movie. (I have not read the book.)

She was a performer. A singer with a high energy spirit who could captivate a crowd. Her being in the 10th games showed that you could get people invested in the tributes and have them root for someone even if they thought they had no chance. That was the start of making it more a reality TV show than a mass slaughter. Katniss is supposed to be cold, distant and not very charismatic / likeable to the people around her, whereas lucy is supposed to be very charismatic and likeable to the people around her, which is how she survives as she does not have the survival skills katniss does.

I feel more like the end was just one of those sudden events that just happen unexpectedly, that the end was equally sudden for the characters as it was was for us. Like a snowball that just gets quicker and quicker. They survived and saw a lot, every character had their story shaped a little bit off screen even maybe, but it was there and you could feel it, and then and the end it just all exploded. Everything happened at once in the story and I felt that the movie showed exactly that. The situation evolved quickly and all the characters had to react adequately, resulting in a mess, but for me it felt on point.

    Then we get films like Endgame and Avatar: The Way of Water. And it clearly pays off since they’re some of the highest grossing films of all time.

I always enjoyed the actual hunger games and less when the movie was about the revolution which was in Mockingjay

It wasn’t rushed in the book, but it was definitely disorienting, because you’re reading everything from Snow’s POV. There are also some things that happen that are left up to interpretation.

    My friend and I saw this last night, I went in completely blind because I haven’t seen any of the movies, haven’t read any of the books (but I knew President Snow was a bad guy so I figured it was a villain origin story) she had seen and read all of the movies and books and we both thought it was really good . I guess now I gotta get into the hunger games series.
    I mean I didn’t analyze the movie much and Tbf it did just end 11 hours ago so it hasn’t really marinated so maybe it won’t age great but overall it was a good time.

    I saw the film last night and I do agree that the film really slowed down at that third act. But I disagree in the area and Lucy Grey. I was concerned at the start because of the accent, but think Ziegler did great job. Her best performance yet. And the thing that worked the most for me in that third act was her realising the man that Snow was becoming. That statement that Peter Dinklage made when she left, and what tigress says at the end really pulled that transformation together with those Forrest scenes. I wouldn’t say she was forgettable in any way. The person who I was most dissatisfied by was Dinklage. I know the character was a bit out of it. But the person who should such a burden never rely came across. Even at the end, he never really sold it.

    I read the book recently and saw the movie today, and the filmmakers did a very faithful adaptation of the novel - I liked that they showed more from Lucy Gray's point of view in the arena, since the book was entirely from Snow's perspective so events sometimes had to be pieced together later. I thought all the actors did a good job with their roles, with Tom Blyth definitely carrying the film and Rachel Zegler making her character very sympathetic (the book has more of her backstory so I may have been subconsciously filling that in while watching the movie). Viola Davis and Peter Dinklage of course were excellent, and Jason Schwartzman as Lucky Flickerman the weatherman/magician/Hunger Games announcer was hilarious.

    Jennifer Lawrence has a beautiful yet relatable look and feel. When you see her cry, it feels like your sister, cousin, or the high school friend everyone loves is crying. This is why her frantic cry of "I volunteer" echoes through the collective consciousness of moviegoers. Ziegler feels like the drama kid who always gets her way. She may be nice to everyone, but behind it, everyone can't shake the feeling that she is fake AF.
