I can definitely relate. In my freshman year in college, I was part of a big group of friends. While I have hung out with each person in the group alone to hang out whenever it came to watching a movie, playing video games, or a card game, there was one guy in the group I never hung out with when it was just the two of us. We only had 1 hour to hang out together before a specific event. During that whole hour, we just mostly sat around in awkward silence. We tried to talk, but it just never went anywhere. We only smiled during the time because we were trying to make it less awkward, but it just made it worse. We did go out for a walk around campus, but it once again wasn't going anywhere. Ever since then, if I were going to hang out with that guy again, I would only want it if it were the rest of my friend group. There was one other time for an hour when it was just the two of us and we did manage to make it better with talking about Stephen King. I'm not friends with this guy anymore however because he was really rude and selfish to everyone.
I think this is what happens when two people don't really mind each other, but the chemistry is so bad it makes the entire encounter painful...and this is most of my interactions.
oh I think they mind each other alright, see how fast they wanted to be rid of each other. Ross didn't even bid Mike goodbye and just closed the door in his face XD
You mean someone with social anxiety. Being introvert doesn't mean you can't talk to people. It means you gain your energy from doing solo things rather than with others. I am an introvert and I can converse perfectly fine with others. I am quite outgoing in that respect. But too much and it literally makes me want to go to sleep LOL
@2:51, there's no dialogue or jokes, but I still burst out laughing first time when I was saw that. David Schwimmer is an absolute genius when it comes to physical comedy & comedic expressions. What an actor!
it would have been lowkey genius if they just dropped a section like this into a sitcom with laugh tracks. usually the laugh tracks are constant, so if they just once took it away that contrast would really highlight any awkwardness or dry humor in the scene. a kind of meta joke where the abscense of something they've primed you to expect becomes part of the joke.
90s sitcoms were not known for attempting anything "meta". It would confuse and possibly alienate the huge audience that was basically guided by the laugh track. I think I get what you're saying but these sitcoms were written to be guided by the laugh track in large part. They normally sound funny without them if they are well written and I think Friends does sometimes but not sure about this one because there's no content other than two guys having nothing to say. I saw one the other day with Ross answering the door to a pizza delivery woman and accidentally saying sus stuff about kids and Chandler comes to rescue him. It works due to the timing and the context.
This is what happens when I get a haircut. So awkward and painful, I hate it. I'm used to getting other people to talk about themselves, but the hair dresser wants to draw me out instead. It's a very exhausting interaction. That was Ross and Mike's problem. Neither one wanted to carry the conversation nor feign interest in the other person's hobbies. Mike could have easily said, "Tell me more about paleontology or keyboarding." And just nodded occasionally while Ross was talking. Easy peasy.
2:51 is one of the many priceless ross moments. I dont understans why he wouldnt ask about the paleontologist cousin more, or opening up the tv.. But it is worth the cringe!!

This is what "Friends" is to me. Just awkwardness and nothing worth laughing at. On the other hand, "Coupling" is the only show that had me literally falling off the couch with laughter.
The awkwardness is why you laugh. The fact you said you like coupling makes me think you understand cringe UK style comedy so it's weird you didn't find this scene funny

Never to this extent 😂
so relatable
I've experienced this more times than I've had hot meals lol

the show had a live audience
