My Dad introduced me to him as a kid, he's also famous for one of the early books on altisimo fingerings for saxophone.

My uncle Glyn said that to me as a 13 year old kid in 1981 .
I first heard Earl in 1961 when I heard Bugle Call Rag. He became my saxophone hero. I can't understand why he has had so little recognition.
Amazing that he is so under-rated.
I think Jazz was taking over and he focused on dance and swing. Somehow that left him out of the heroin/smoking/ drug crowd. sort of like he wasn't in the in crowd. @@GetYourSaxTogether
I have an old 78rpm of Earl Bostic with Embraceable You & Night & Day which was popular during the era of instrumentals many years ago (1950s)
. Earl Bostic had an individual sound with that raspy, growly tone which was unique & instantly recognisable. Thanks for explaining his use of a Tenor Reed on the Alto Jamie. I had no idea of this. As a result I have tried this out & it works for me. My Alto sounds just great now with a broader tone & volumn. I am no Earl Bostic, but thanks again for some very useful information & your super videos. Stormin Norman.

The melodic virtuosity in the altissimo is unlike anyone I have ever heard all while maintaining that groove and tone. It would be very interesting to know how it was recorded. If he did it in one take that would truly be out of this world insane. A true saxophone master.

It looks like it was recorded in March 1959 so it was very likely mixed live directly to mono/stereo and equally likely all one take.
My wife kept looking in my direction with an annoyed look on her face, whenever I laughed out loud, while watching this video with the headphones on. Although I hate jazz, I had to watch till the end. Indeed insane, what a talent.

So exciting! I'm holding my breath in between passages just watching! Years ago, I was playing with a swing band, and the bass player brought me a cassette tape of Earl Bostic, hoping he could inspire me to learn to play like that. Haha!

WOOOW. Thanks for the dive into Bostic. I'd forgotten about him. He is literally the sound of Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, and probably dozens of others. That raw, gritty, sharp almost anti-Lester Young tone. He was also developing the sound/rhythm that would become Rock n Roll. Brilliant!

I've been a big fan of Earl Bostic for many years since I first heard Steam Whistle jump, for those into his sound you might like to try out a Beechler diamond inlay s8s, (other tip openings are available if 8 is to wide) you'll be surprised at how easily the high notes pop out.

He was ultimately really a great swing player with technique that was off the charts.
I liken him to someone more like jimmy dorsey stylistically, not really a bebop guy at all. Definitely the beginning of rock and roll sax playing. Without question, unparalleled technique technique!😊😊

Hello. This is because Earl Bostic i play saxophone. I was 10 years old when i listened a record of my dad, Mambolino. I said i want to play that instrument... i' m 57 now :-) and still play saxophone, but so far from Earl. Thanks Jamie for your job.

I love Earl Bostic and this video! One thing you don't mention (or do) is the technique where he slides his tongue over the tip of the mouthpiece (like at 11:40 - 11:41). It was one of his signature techniques. I've never really been able to pull it off the way he does.

James Carter is very heavy in the altissimo. I have a friend, John Phillips in L.A, who was absolutely killing on tenor. You are doing great! But these players have been around since the beginning. I think Sam Butera and Lee Wiley have the same New Orleans style melodically. You can get a transcription from Sharp Eleven Music on RUclips.

There was a studio musician in LA named John Phillips who had as much facility in the altissimo as Bostic and he could also double on everything. You mentioned Ernie Watts. Ask him about John Phillips in the LA scene back in the 70s and 80s.

I'm an alto player, but would like to add a tenor at some point. Did you have to trim the tenor reed to fit the alto mouthpiece? What strength reed did you use? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Nah, I just put it right on there. My reed for this example was a D'Addario Venn 3.0+, but that's pretty hard to be honest!
This amount of high altissimo on alto reminds me of the saying " just because you can, doesn't mean you should!" Great breakdown though, as ever Jamie.

I have played alto with a tenor reed purely by accidentally setting the wrong reed, and I loved the tone. Mind you on the scale of playing a la Bostic, I score a minus 1000 out of 100!

What's really amazing is he was crushing altissimo on horns without modern ergonomics. They might have had better bore designs though, so there is that.
I know a lot of the classical guys were not... enthusiastic... with jazz, and often disrespectful. But you can bet Bostic had a copy of Top Tones with him.

@@GetYourSaxTogether looks like the first copyright for Top Tones is 1941. I can't find the release date for Up There. I figured it was later since Sigurd Rascher doesn't have too much of a comb over in his book yet.
You know he's a good player when a professional sounds like a tea kettle trying to reproduce the sound. And that's not a dig at you but Bostic is absolutely insane.
