For everyone asking about top coats, i did this exact thing with the exact same stain a few years again and I didn’t seal it and if I wipe the cabinet, some stain comes off. I definitely recommend sealing it.
Did you sand your cabinets before you added the Java gel Stain? Or add a Topcoat?
Please do a follow on how it lasted with the bathroom dampness. Also what, if anything, that you would do differently! Great look! I think I may try this in my bathroom. Thanks so much for the video!
Did you use a clear sealant to finish it? How do you clean them now?
Why type of counter top is that?
I used the java just like you did on my grandmother buffet table and it came out beautiful. It enhanced the grain and I couldn’t be happier. I also raided my husbands old white undershirts and cut them up. Figured if I needed to spend $ it would be on new undershirts... keep the hubby happy :-)
Love the look. I am getting ready to do my kitchen cabinets in antique walnut gel stain. I wasn't looking forward to using it since most everyone's videos show them using it as a paint and that was too dark for me. Then I saw general finishes how to video on the proper way to use their gel stain, now I'm going to give it a try. You're the 1st person to use it as they recommend and I love the results. Can't wait for my shipment so I can get started. The only thing is I bought the quart size and after your statement about how much is left, I'm wondering if I should have bought the pint size. Oh well guess I'll have to find more projects to use it on.
Thank you for the Idea .A fresh new look ,without painting over the Wood ...the tatch of darker looks fabulous....Well,...now I have to run to get everything, can't wait ...Thank you for this Tip !
We really liked how your cabinets turned out. Yours was different that you wiped right away, very unique. You mentioned that you were going to do more rooms, would love to see a follow-up video of any more you did or how these are holding up. Thanks!
Thanks for the inquiry. The cabinets are holding up great! More projects with the gel stain are in the works. Subscribe if you haven't so you are updated on future videos! :)
Forgive me if I missed it but what did you do for prep ?
Love the look! Did you prep the cabinets at all? Wash them or stain them? Thanks.
Do you sandpaper your cabinets first or just the stain gel ove it
April did you have to clean and sand the cabinets before using the stain?
Does it clean well? Did you have to seal it?
I love the tutorial. Thank you! I love real people with real projects who are new at them like myself. I appreciate your time. I'm actually excited to try it myself now. ; )
Did you sand ?
Have you tried the product anywhere where the original poly finish has worn off leaving the wood unfinished? My kitchen cabinet doors are really worn so wondering how forgiving it would be over the different surfaces. Would love to do that exact finish. Thanks for posting.
I have used this stain on furniture. My favorite outcome was a garage-sale piece. It was a very light (idk, blonde-stained wood?) and had some prior finish damage. I've found that sanding with very lightweight sandpaper worked best for me. Sanding, then wiping the wood completely. With this stain, you can create different levels of darkness. On the garage sale piece, I made the center part of the doors and the corners a little darker than the rest by leaving the stain on longer and using more coats. The end result was much more of a chocolate color. Oh, and I used a sponge brush to apply and old socks to wipe. I definitely like her White Rags much better and will try those instead. I'm on here today because I want to take on a bigger project. Watching this helped me remember how easy this gel stain is to apply.
I would do a light sand before applying any type of stain. The poly will act as a barrier even with gel stain and you most likely end up with a splotchy look to your cabinet.
@@AprilBurson So you are saying sand all the way to bare wood?
@@BobC59 In this video. the General Finishes did amazing for me with no sanding and provided a deeper color on my cabinets, which is what I was going for. However, I did not have any damage to the top coat/sealant. In my experience with working with many types of stains, the need for sanding depends on the desired outcome. If you want a variation in color saturation, you can get away with a light to medium sand to remove the old sealant. If you want the stain to be uniformed, a complete stripping/sanding to bare wood is recommended.
Do you seal it so it can be cleaned?
April you nailed it looks fantastic!
Looks Amazing! I think I’m gonna try it. Thanks for the video
Did you have to sand the wood first?
Love your tutorial and your cabinets turned out gorgeous!! Thank you for sharing this, I'm ready to do my bathrooms now, just purchased the Java gel stain and your tutorial was super informative and helpful!!!
molly smith your comments really made my day! Thank you! ❤️
Can’t wait to try this on my cabinets!!
Did you try it? If so did you sand it down and topcoat it??
Great work! Your video inspired me to do my kitchen cabinets. What color did you choose for your cabinets?
Eva Liu The color I chose was Java.
Thank you a lot!
Love this! Looks very expensive and classy! I’ll be trying this!!
Great tutorial and the cabinet looks beautiful! Did you use a poly top coat?
divasmom8 you can definitely seal with a poly topcoat.
No topcoat used on mine but General Finishes does sell one if you are inclined to seal yours. :)
@@AprilBurson This begs the question: Does this stain coat last or wear off? Do they suggest :sealing: it with poly or is it a poly product (like Minwax gel)?
@@BobC59 I personally chose not to seal and my cabinets still look amazing and have no signs of wear. If you are going to be using the gel stain on a piece of furniture that will have a lot of use, for instance a table top, I would most definitely use a top coat/sealant of your choice. My favorite go to sealant is Minwax Waterbase Polyacrylic. General Finish has a sealant you can purchase, but I personally have not used it so I cannot speak on the quality of the product. Hope this helps. :)
@@AprilBurson Thanks very much!
Did you sand it down 1st???
And did you add topcoat?
I respect what you do but in order to stain you have to remove the top coat which I see is there. the stain will not last unfortunately
Beautiful!!
I have seen so many videos with Java gel stain. Just wondering, why is everyone using Java gel stain and not other color.
For me, it was the color that best fit my desired outcome. I'm sure the other colors work just as well but it was a personal preference. Thanks for the question.
Looks great! Thanks!
HUM......You really should do prep, clean it with TSP first, then do alight sanding....Gel stain is a top coat, non-penetrating finish....this will peel off
looks the same to me you should have put a before and after shot side by side
Best to wipe it with a lint free damp rag
