This is the biggest renovation I've done in my house so far, and one that I've been looking forward to with massive excitement. It ended up being a project much more complicated than I expected, but after much research it was possible to get three Velux skylight windows installed in my dark 70's house. Very wonderful Elise. The Contractors have worked hard (and yes they do more than carpentry work lol) We've installed 3 sky lights in out family room and absolutely love them, in addition to the light you will enjoy looking up at the sky and rain on them!!!! Yes, yes, yes magnifico!!!! Cheers An now the hard work begins for you, hoping you get some help for that ceiling that is doable but grueling.

I thought the same thing many times. Traditionally speaking, the dining room has always been designed to be next to the kitchen, for practical reasons. However, your lifestyle may dictate that different ways of functioning may work best for you at this time.

I'm 62 and look forward to your videos. In some ways you remind me 9f myself 30 years ago; single, living as a creative bohemian lifestyle and loving home DIY projects. But YOU love are much more brave and cool! Please don't ever let anyone yuck your yum! I found tge perfect partner and married at 46. He was the first to really see and appreciate my free spirit. We led a wonderful creative life, inspiring each other daily to try new things and doing many together. I lost him to cancer 6 years ago and I have learned to never settle for less than I bring to a relationship. It's infinately better to live a solo life than settle. May you continue to find ways to be MORE Elise daily. Never shrink your beautiful spirit to fit in a relationship.

Elise you really need a professional to tape and mud the new drywall. You will never be able to get a properly finished job yourself. I’ve attempted it once and the finishing was just not good enough and I learned that it is should be done by a drywall contractor. Good luck trying though.
In England where I live most people would get a plasterer to skim over the whole surface. It can cost quite a bit as I know only you well!
I'm honestly really digging that wall. I think a big archway would look amazing in this place. Not like a real wall, but rounded edges to give the space some more structure and it'd still be fully open. I've seen women do this by themselves, so, it is possible, if you like that idea.

The skylights are beautiful, and I like the exposed beams. My immediate thought with those was "oOOh what could be hung from those beans at Christmas time?". Your house is so cozy and charming, and that project was such a good idea to bring more light into your main living space. Creates so many more options for current and future arrangements to use the space.

I had the same thoughts as both of you. Trailing plants year round plus sparkly decorations and a canopy of fairy lights through the darkest weeks.

I love the light it brings in, not sure how I feel about the wood. It looks more like braces than beams. What matters is that you like it.

That parcel from Paris was so lovely and the waistcoats are amazing - fun watching you unpack that box. Your home is amazing with that light and you are going from strength to strength.
As I was looking at the guys pulling down that yucky old insulation my first thought was, "why aren't they wearing masks," that stuff was so gross who knows what sort of germs were in it. Anyway, that's all gone and you have a lovely new ceiling, congrats. Your rhododendron's are exquisite, their colors and blooms are spectacular. Have fun enjoying your "new" space.

Hi Elise. What a difference your renovation makes and having natural light is so important to one’s well-being and inner peace. The amount of dust is overwhelming in any internal building project but I know you will get there and make the space as unique and individual as the rest of your house. Elise , how are you supposed to tape and paste and sand and putty all of those cracks and nail heads ? I don't understand that? That is a job half done from where I live. I love the light and think it will be beautiful. I
That olive green jacket is a beautiful color on you and looks good with your hair color. The end result of the room will be beautiful and worth all the mess it is now and something you can enjoy for years to come, hope you have a good day.
Raising the ceiling in the dining room & kitchen and installing the skylights will have a massive impact on how the space feels. Two suggestions for you: Once your project is done, consider hanging the large mirror horizontally at the end of the dining room. It would reflect light from the opposite side of the room and bring nature in from outside. Turn the rug and the table horizontally, too. Try it. If you don’t like it, you can always change it back.
I agree! Raising the ceiling in the entire room would have brought in even more light

I've just realised that I completely misunderstood your project. I thought you had installed those small (tacky) skylights in your ceiling, whereas you had a massive skylight WINDOW opening in your ceiling 😂😂😂

Those skylights are so wonderful! Such beautiful sunshine entering in. That's a great idea to leave that room closed off until you finish drywalling the ceilings. Such a lovely transformation.
I would definitely hire out finishing the ceiling. The height of the skylight would be enough to deter me, not to mention all that taping, mudding, sanding, mudding and sanding again over my head. It's a MASSIVE job!

Elise, first off, thank you for putting my moms painting in your office. Have to admit it brought me to tears. She isn't doing too well and has to have one of her heart valves replaced very soon. She had rheumatic fever when she was a child and it damaged one of her heart valves. So over the course of the years they kept checking it and now that she's 84 she has to have it replaced. She has a hard time bringing in a bag of groceries into the house. My my mother doesn't look 84 and she is very active so not being able to do that is very bad and it frustrates her. So it's nice to watch your channel and at times have a reminder of her. 🙂 my son is getting married in August and I'm just hoping that she is well enough recovered so she can attend. I can't believe I have a son that's a couple of years younger than you and I also have another son that's the same age😮
So on a lighter note, and I don't mean to bring down the joy of your windows because I absolutely love them! But the pink flowers you showed on May 8th, I just planted a bush like that on the side of my home, and I didn't realize it gets so big! Mine is small it's only like two feet high and I can only imagine how it's going to look when it's the size of the one you have😂 also, have you thought about putting in a super thanks on your Channel? it's where people can send you a super thanks in whatever amount they want. It's actually very handy because this one person that I watch, I actually send him $2 every time I watch one of his videos. I think it's only fair for all the work that the videos are. Anyways the house is looking great and I can't wait for the next video. I'm also going to order some of your artwork to hang in my bedroom. I think it would actually look really great

The skylights have made a huge difference! They let in so much light. I've lived in houses that I struggled with getting enough natural light. They look fantastic!
I think making your dining area in front of the big picture window would be lovely. And the living room in the new constructed area so cozy

The light that comes in from those windows is awesome! Yes, you will have more dust from mudding, taping, and sanding that you initially did with the construction part. Sanding creates a tremendous amount of dust. Wear a dust mask when you do that to protect your lungs.
Looks amazing! You will probably be finding dust for months. . The winters will be so much brighter now!
I can't believe you showered while you had something heating up in the toaster oven! You should never ever ever do that! So dangerous! I had a toaster oven catch on fire years ago. I also had a pedestal fan that was right in front of me, catch on fire. Now, I never leave the room if those 2 things are on. Taught me a big lesson. Don't take the chance. God forbid, your house could go up in flames...with you in it!

Brave girl, to be sure; but the skylight is magical. 🎉❤😊 J'adore the French gift haul.
Just remember to caulk around the edge of the glass/window from the roof every 3-5 years because the caulk breaks down and then the glass will leak. It happened to me and just the caulking fixed the problem.

She's already done the mudding and taping in her kitchen and did a great job at it. So this should be a piece of cake for her because the kitchen was a lot. I can't wait to see it all finished

I agree, because I tried to do it, that you should hire someone to do the entire drywall project. It is really, really difficult for an amateur to tape and mud the seams so that they look good.

Your skylights look amazing! I'm sad to see the ceiling paneling go but mainly because it's so expensive where I live. Whatever you choose to do will be beautiful as always. Surprised they didn’t have masks on -old insulation one must be careful. Vaccum alot or something.,or a machine to remove residue in the air. Will be very nice and light when done.

The dust is everywhere. I had some of my landlords d_mb crew drill holes or whatever into the brick walls in our basement and they did NOT tell me what they were planning and did only hang some flimsy tarps and now EVERYTHING I had stored in my compartment of the cellar is covered with a THICK layer of that dust. I talked to them and they yelled *at me*! I have contacted a lawyer, I am sick of dealing with them. It was not the first incident. They also tore down walls in the apartment below me although I warned them NOT to do so because I feared structual problems with the wooden floor beams and as a result OF COURSE my floor sank and is now wonky and has big gaps between floor and wall. Again the caretaker yelled at me. Resulted in depression for me, unable to function properly and live relaxed and without fear in my flat, It's horrible. Be thankful for nice handymen who know that they are doing. 😟 - Your skylights are beautiful but why is the skylight so high up while your ceilings are so low? What is in that space between your ceiling and the roof? 🤔 Serious question

I thought that the opening of the roof would be much larger, even up to the part where the seat is. Or it would be nice to open the roof over the entire kitchen and living room. But it looks far better than before.
