For those of us older individuals who were in despair when Thatcher and her neoliberalism were voted into Number 10, i would ask you to be a bit more generous in your remarks about my generation. All my instincts told me that it was going to be the beginning of the end of everything i held dear, a safety net for all , basic utilities that we all owned.I was 36 yrs old at the time, working as a Health visitor and living in a bed sit. Not all of us had it easy, i never changed my mind.
My mum was like you. She struggled financially throughout her life and always hated thatcher and then John Major for making the country worse off for ordinary people. I’m 36 and I know Kier Starmer is just going to continue austerity and he’s a red Tory. I’m really worried how much worse it’s going to get for my family and the country.

My son, who's mum voted Brexit, has been quizzing me on it for his gcse politics why so many people voted for it, and what they think now... i had to explain many of them have died since...
Well, if you're any kind of a parent, maybe you could let your son know that the Turing scheme has replaced the Erasmus programme, so now he can study/work all around the world, not just in Europe.

American here. Britain is like History Land at Disney World, but dirtier. We generally think that Britain’s major social issues are too burdensome for any political party to solve. You have ten million too many people living in the UK. And the NHS as constructed and financed is impossible to fix, I have no idea how you’ve lived with it for so many years. Boris, was a US citizen and was born in New York. Despite him renouncing his citizen. Because he was born there, he could ask for it back. So he could EASILY make his way to congress in the US. Which I feel is MUCH more suited to Johnson's style of politics and would not be suprised

I'm 71. I was brought up on a council estate. Even in the 70s, there were no council houses for singles. Even couples without children were way down the list. Private renting or buying were the only options even then.

2 things on the houses and inheritance tax - 1. If you're elderly and only have pension income remortgaging may be very difficult unless your pension income is substantial and you have adequate arrangements to payback the loan on death. 2. You have to pay inheritance tax before inheriting. It would be reasonable to allow the assets to be sold to raise the money for inheritance. E.g. the state could take a first charge against the asset so the tax is paid as part of the sale.

I think a huge part that is missing around the wealth tax is it is NOT eroding wealth, the people with these assets already earn roughly 5% - 7% interest on that wealth so saying pay 1% tax on wealth could be rephrased as return 1% less interest on your wealth…
Boris cut short his US holiday to claim his 100 MPs (dubious), or watch Rishi fall short of 100 MPs (didn't) to force a party vote that would reinstate Boris (more than likely). Nary a principle nor sense of duty between them.

If the family home goes to children then the untaxed bit is £500K per parent so total is £1 million, which is why so few people pay inheritance tax currently obviously as assets accrue more people will but you`re still talking big money, love the show looking forward to tomorrow x
Exactly. It is absurd. Also, it benefits only children. It should be reformed so every child gets an allowance up to a modest amount and then gets pumped after that.

There's not laws against it per se, but if you die shortly after giving a large gift then you pay inheritance tax on it like normal if it's due

And if you said you have to pay tax if you sell the property then I would understand but in many cases people are finally getting to own in a place rent free but can't and are pushed into selling to move elsewhere

9:41 Cameron didn't cut the aid budget, he increased it and has said since he considers it his "legacy". He didn't do that because he really wants to help people though. Unfortunately the aid budget barely goes towards actual aid and mainly goes to help fund corporate interests doing, often fairly exploitative, deals with developing countries.

NOBODY PAYS INHERITANCE TAX! It is paid from the estate of the dead person. The remainder of the estate then goes to the inheritor. I have never understood why anyone is opposed to it.
I get Seán's point though. If there's just "the family home" that's being passed down and it's worth a tidy £800k (not unreasonable for a fair sized detached family home in the South West), in order to pay the tax bill (as the sole executor), I as a privately renting Gen Xer with no money in the bank have to sell "the family home" in order to pay the tax bill (£120k if you're wondering), rather than what might be preferable, which would be to live in said home and no longer pay rent.
Wait - I just checked - you have 10 years to pay the £120k (if you're not selling) : HMRC just became your landlord, you can do what you like to the property and you own it outright in 10 years flat (technically you already own it, you just owe HMRC some money), or if you don't want to move, you can sell it and put a hefty £680k deposit down on another house.

@@ShakirahIbaad There is currently no capital gains tax on first homes, whether you are dead or alive. Secondly. capital gains tax does not apply on death, which covers second and further properties. Instead, the estate becomes liable to inheritance tax. However, the effective tax free allowance for a married couple who leave the value of a property to children or grandchildren is £1 million. What taxes are you speaking of exactly?
