  • On a trip to photograph an iconic mountain, I sidetracked into a veritable labratory for experimentation. This episode is of that sidetrack. Delving into abstract, minimalism, black and white, and a little waxing poetic on following your curiosity.

I saw plenty of potential avalanche barrier but no place to park... the accessible ones are not that photogenic, typical lol.

True! They are often in the most difficult places to stop. Luckily, the mountain pass had a large rest area carved out and I could stop. I’m on the lookout for more minimalistic ones next time.

@@shaunkeenanphoto Please do! I plan to return to Hokkaido in 2026 winter to re-explore again Shiribeshi, Iburi and Ishikari prefectures.

Beautiful images Shaun! Loved the shot at 6:55 for some abstraction of the shadows on the snow. Way to go for the unexpected opportunities.

Many thanks Keith! It’s always fun to find new ways of seeing a scene. The snow makes all the difference.

Loved the concept of opening up to what presents itself, regardless of what the plan was. Absolutely agree. Makes it possible for discovery. Great episode!

I definitely struggle with adapting, but it’s a skill. And with any skill, it takes practice and a couple of breakthroughs to get better at it.

I love not having preconceived ideas…just a destination in mind. I find it helps me get into the flow much quicker because the mind is open to different ideas until a vision forms.

It’s an ideal approach for sure. I often feel the pressure with the cameras rolling, 😅 but good to step back and, like you said, be open to different ideas.
