You are the best sewing teacher on the entire internet! I just started watching you today and I’ve learned more than all the months of other tutorials I’ve sat through. I really appreciate how you patiently and throughly explain the “why’s” of sewing techniques. Finally, it’s starting to make sense and I no longer feel intimated by sewing! Thank you Thank you Thank you Wishing you Joy, Good Health, Love and Abundant Prosperity
Dear Professor Pincushion, This was an excellent tutorial on how to sew with knit fabrics. I had given up hope on sewing dresses, because my seams would pop open and I had a very difficult time sewing this problematic fabric. But your tips and tricks have encouraged me to go back to sewing and try and finish my dresses that I had started a few years ago. Thank you
I have looked at many videos and you are the only one that showed what to do with those cut on folds and walked through the process. Many great tips. Thanks!
Just right for me, appreciate no and, and, or uh, uh, throughout. Your pace was perfect for me. I will be watching more if your tutorials. I learned lots of neat tips. Thank you, Jojo Sewist
I've watched a few of your tutorials before. Those plus this one are so excellently done. I appreciate the pace at which you talk and how you fill each tutorial to the brim with tips. Thank you so much.
+Laura Williams thank you so much for the kind words! We work really hard on making our tutorials as helpful as possible so it's nice when people enjoy them :)
i cannot thank you enough for this tutorial. You answered every single question I had. I'm subscribing because I know you will teach me so much just because you are amazing. Thank you so so much.
Wow thanks for this great tutorial. Love the speed. I usually hate sewing tutorials and only last about 2 minutes in because they’re so excruciatingly slow to get to the point and hem and haw around about every little detail. This one is awesome.
This was incredibly helpful! Thank you so much! I especially appreciated how you walked us through using spray starch and a twin needle. I had read those tips before, but didn't know exactly how to use a twin needle...good to know that a regular straight stitch is ok with a twin needle!
Thank you!! I love the spray starch idea, it made a recent knit project 1000x easier! Since I can’t be trusted not to burn myself with my iron doing this I used an old hair flat iron with the starch (I only use it for crafts; my hair is safe). It worked like a charm!
Thanks for the video Professor. I have a little trouble with self-confidence when it comes to Jersey knit but this video is a confidence builder for me. Thanks again. You are a great teacher.
Wow that was a lot of really good information packed into one video! I basically use jersey knit for all my sewing since I mostly do creative t-shirt transformations, and this has changed SO much for me. Before, I would kinda just hope the fabric would roll the way I wanted it to, but now I'll be constantly thinking about which is the right and wrong side, and use starch if I need to :) Thanks so much!
Cherish Red curling on the selvages is just use to determine right and wrong side of fabric. so even if your fabric is cut, you can still look at the selvages.
Extremely helpful! Thank you!! I was making pajamas with cotton jersey knit and I almost ripped my hair out lol. I didn't have any bonding tape, jersey needle or twin needle or walking foot! Just a sewing machine. But this really helps as I am very new to sewing. I almost quit on sewing!! This will help me keep going and trying again! Thanks again!
Thank you for another great video, I'm a new sewer and was terrified of sewing jersey despite being a knitter :) & raised in New Jersey (Sorry had make that pun). I know the video is 7 years old but, seeing a skilled sewer as yourself using the same generation Husqvarna as mine was another confidence boost. It's easy to get caught up in what photo nerds call G.A.S (Gear acquisition syndrome)
HeatnBond Soft Stretch iron on bonding tape keeps both layers of fabric lined up, prevents stretching to easily sew hem w/twin needle. Walmart $3.47 in fabric dept ...
This video came out at the perfect time! I just decided to take on a project that involves me making like 20 jersey knit shirts and dresses. This is so helpful.
✍🏾 Jersey tends to roll towards the wrong side of fabric. Lay fabric out in single layer. Grain always needs to be parallel to the selvage Use only ballpoint pins to pin Use spray starch Iron : synthetic/knit setting. No steam. Pat/press. No pushing. Make sure its washable. Wash afterwards to get out the starch. Use knit interfacing. Jersey Stretch twin needle or ballpoint needle All purpose thread Walking foot Stretch or zigzag stitch Width .5 Length 2.5 Knit doesn’t fray
super super good video on sewing knits. I use to make my boys t-shirts when they were little and love the knits. Will have to make myself one, now that you reminded me of how easy it was. Thanks
Thanks for these great tips!! I'm somewhat a new sewer and I have lots to learn yet. I will be watching all your videos, please keep making more better yet for beginners...lol Love your nails to.
So relieved to know that I can keep a raw edge, fold only once. I was thinking How am I going to fold jersey twice and see neatly!? Also the spray starch is a great idea for the rolling! Will be trying that to stabilize the sewing area fabric. Thank you!
I've never worked with knits before. I bought a very stretchy jersey. There are skinny stripes running up and down the fabric. When I saw the fabric on the bolt, the stripes were running vertically and I liked the way it looked. But I am confused on the way I should cut it because the lady at the store asked me how I plan to wear it. With the stripes horizontally or vertically? I did not know what she meant because the jersey is so stretchy I thought I could wear it in either direction. But now, for three days I have been trying to lay out my maxi dress pattern on grain. The grain does not line up with the selvage. I have never experienced this problem before. Nobody should take over one and half hours to line up a pattern. Ugh! I wanted to make a nice dress for summer but didn't realize it would cause me so much grief!
Lots of useful information, here, thanks. I have a couple of questions - how do you use grainlines when the jersey fabric doesn't have a selvedge edge? And do twin needles come with ball points? Thanks in advance.
It's not really the "grainline" that you have to worry about. You just want to make sure the the direction of the fabric with the greatest amount of stretch is going around your body instead of going up and down the body. If you follow that rule when placing your pieces down then you should be fine. Schmetz does have a stretch twin needle so I would use that one :)
Hi Professor. This video was extremely helpful. I’ve never sewed with jersey knot before and making a skirt for my mother-in-law. The knit I am using is extremely stretchy and heavy. I was wondering if you would suggest that I add a stretchy fusible interfacing in the waistband to give it a bit more structure. It is an elasticized band and it does need to stretch. My mom has a heath issue and the waistband needs an inch or two of stretchability. The fabric feels like over time it may stretch a lot and become a much bigger size. I was thinking the interfacing may allow a stretch but retain the shape? What do you think?
I've never worked with Jersey knit before and recently purchased a medium weight polyester blend type of material that is very stretchy and curls at the ends also some fraying, I made a pair of Palazzo pants and was wonder why one leg was a little shorter that the other, now I realized that the fabric was dangling of the table causing it to stretch. I wished I had seen your video before cutting my material, it would have saved me the headache.
Lind, i did laugh out load reading that, thanks for the laugh. I hope you were able to laugh at yourself afterwards!Lucky its an easy fix. I know this is old but I’m trying to sew a neckband onto a tshirt but the fabric is curling and making it difficult. I cut the band and pressed and it was fine but when stretching the band to fit the neck hole, it just sprung back into a curl!! If I use starch to help flatten, can I still stretch while sewing?
@@nicolanewman9308 I think I might have a bad day then. Now my reply is old, I hope you were able to finish it. I don’t sew with knits but I have. We’re you stretching the tshirt as you are stretching the band at the same time? You can still stretch after using starch.
Hi, so making outfits in bulk (2000 pcs) of different materials do you advise to cut with patterns and what kind of sewing machines would you recommend?
wow, that's a lot! If you do use pattern pieces, trace the tissue paper lines on thick paper, like manila paper because it'll be more durable and I would just a rotary cutter and mat to cut out your fabric pieces, it'll be faster and less work on your hands, rather than cutting with scissors. Because you're making so many garments, if you're just mainly using a straight stitch, you may want to look into an industrial sewing machine. They usually only do a few functions, can be expensive but are built like a horse and can handle a large volume. I don't have one of these machines so I can't recommend any brand in particular but that's where I would start my research and you might be able to find one used.
I'm having so much trouble with skipped stitches while using a zig zag stitch on stretch cotton jersey. I'm not using a walking foot and have adjusted thread tension and presser foot tension. I am at such a loss. I am using brand new ballpoint needles and everything.
when was the last time you had your machine cleaned and maintenance? Sometimes if there's a lot of dust inside the machine it can cause stitching issues. You should also have your machine taken into a professional for a yearly maintenance, so if it's been awhile, you might try that.
Great video! I am trying to learn to sew with those darn stretchy knits, and you are a great help. However the finished edge of the fabric is called selvedge or (selvage) not salvage which is a completely different word meaning rescue or recover.
Been putting off using the twin needle. Used it successfully after watching this brilliant demo. Thank you for taking the time and patience.
Really excellent video, thank you. I appreciated that it was very straightforward with no lengthy introductions and no waffle. Straight to the point, clear, well-paced, full of tips that look useful. I will be trying jersey for the first time soon!

check the curling on the selvages only. On the cut edge of the fabric, I don't think this rule necessarily applies. Jersey can be a tricky cat :)
oh hmm...so the curling is mostly just for the pre-cut fabric edges?
Cherish Red curling on the selvages is just use to determine right and wrong side of fabric. so even if your fabric is cut, you can still look at the selvages.
OK, got it. Thanks!

Thanks for the tips! Does it matter what type of thread you use for jersey?
I just use all-purpose :)
I have always read that the raw edge of jersey knits rolls to the right side, not the wrong side.
What I don't understand is why it matters which side you choose to put on the outside of your shirt. As long as you cut all the pieces on the same side, why wouldn't it be entirely personal preference?
Do you always use a straight stitch when using twin needles?
Thanks 4 open my eyes

Ball point needles break easy on a contact with any thickness because they can't perforate it so they bend and break
Xthanks so much . Are the twin needles ballpoint?
yes, although, they might be called twin needle stretch
