The movie arrived in 1954 in our village. I was 12 yo. My mother took me with her to the cinema and we both have cryed there for one and a half our. This is Giglis best song. I love this man and his sweet voice ! Hans NL
Franco Corelli said in an interview that the recordings can't really tell you just how beautiful Gigli's voice was live in the theater. Corelli said it was like an angel was singing and Gigli's mezza voce or falsetto could "fill the theater" and no one else had this. It was something unique to Gigli
If he hadn't sobbed, it wouldn't be Gigli. If Ray Charles didn't have a tear in his voice, it wouldn't be Ray Charles. People love Gigli because of the abundant feeling with which he sings - his ability to invoke the deepest emotions within us; an ability to clench a fist in our chests. And when Gigli overflows, he causes us to overflow too. That's a beautiful, human feeling and not mechanical or contrived in any way. Gigli can make me weep whereas Pavarotti can't, despite his power & technique.
Well- seeing how you asked.. Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys had a voice that was described as 'angelic' ..one of his most iconic performances was "I Can Hear Music"-- written for the Ronettes to perform but his rendition is by far the best. He is no longer with us, passed from cancer.. RIP
the Greatest tenor of all times! Just to mention that he was a close friend of Padre Pio who would walk away in tears when he heard the maestro sing is favourite song......
No one had a mezza voce quite like Gigli... well maybe Tito Schipa. But Gigli is my favorite because he can bust out powerful high notes, too. Even in his late 60's singing live at Buenos Aires. Opera would be popular again if he or anyone could sing like this! (I don't count those tenors who perform with 3 microphones in front of their faces)
I would agree, his Cavalleria with Mascagni conducting while excellent isn't the same as DiStefano powering down the notes so that your chair rattled. For mezza voce and pianissimo, I go for Gigli. For over all quality of tone and ease of singing, probably Bjoerling is the guy I want to sing like.
when one asks why I love Gigli's voice so much this is one of the hundred or so songs that I use such beauty, control passion and control who in the last 50 years can sing this well dare I say it no one!
Gigli's singing was like flowing gold, free from the effort you feel in most contemporary tenors. Schipa was also great, but with a "smaller" voice, even if very refined and subtle. I agree with most of you; Gigli is the greatest!

I absolutely believe Corelli. Gigli's mezza voce was completely unique. If you look at the sound through a spectrograph you see that even his softest singing had a tremendous amount of energy in the high resonances that the human ear responds to, something few, if any, singers ever have accomplished.
Simply great: many many years ago i was living close to his dream villa and sometimes he used to sing in the church which was unbelievably full. If you have Google Maps, digit via serchio 4 roma and you'll see his towered wonderful villa, now an embassy. Thank you for uploading.
B. G. one of the greatest tenors all time...183.020 clicks..... almost forgotten????? Amazing voice... sometimes "over-acting", but great tenor-voice....
+BestSopranoEverHinaSpani Yes, he's one of the greatest tenors. Respect. And this 'singing' (film)scene isn't an "over-acting" one.... great, natural performance (this time) ... an of coars: his voice is 'unique'... like all voices of human beings are "unique".....' but Benjamino Giggli could sing ... also "like no one else" can sing... of coarse: he was a great singer!!!! Thanks a lot!!!!
The blonde woman in the wings was Binnie Barnes - a singer/actress from the 30's. In the 50's/60's I saw Gigli in person in Toronto Canada, at Massey Hall on his final world tour. He died a few years later.....Always my favourite tenor. Jim White
Aucun effort.
Will all these great singers like Beniamino Gigli and so many others from the early times die with us when we go. I don't see any interest in such beautiful voices in todays generation. This is real singing.
QUERIDO BENIAMINO.

AchillesShield, google Bel Canto Society, find the store page. Then find the dvd of DO NOT FORGET ME. They ship internationally. It's a beautiful film, & contains some of Gigli's best mezza voce singing. Enjoy!
His 1935 HMV recording of this song, where he didn't sing in messa voce was not nearly as good as this one. My favorite Gigli rendition is from a live concert he gave in the mid 30s, where he addresses the audience in Italian and English at the end. It was from an LP my father had called 'Beniamino Gigli recital' released by Everest/Scala Records. Date was not included but I lost the LP a long time ago and I wish I could hear it again. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it.
Cara mio Ben greetings from Ireland and one of your great admirers..good to know that that lovely song was composed for you. Maybe too, youtube will make it available..Bilstew..
No one sings this better, not even di Stefano. The way he caresses the phrases at 1:39 is incredible. Who ranked him 3rd after Bjorling and Pavarotti? You must be crazy. Bjorling didn't have an Italian voice and Pavarotti certainly was not a greater Italian lyric than Gigli.
Wonderful: Non ti Scordar di Me Ernesto de Curtis Gigli
The swallows have left My cold and sunless land To seek the spring among the violets Love nests of happiness. My little swallow has flown without leaving me a kiss Without saying goodbye Do not forget me My life is joined to yours My love for you will always grow You will always be in my dreams Do not forget me My life is joined with yours There’ll always be a nest in my heart for you Do not forget me. My life is joined with yours There’ll always be a nest in my heart for you Do not forget me.

How does this one stand out? Listen everyone else perform this and it's about the singer. Gigli's is about the song. Ends with a nice falsetto instead of belting it out.
I would love it to be able to say something .... but I just can't ..... whatever thing I could write would never match the emotion I feel as I listen to this ...
@tenorrmanMany tenors went to Melocchi mostly out of neccessity, They could not be heard or wanted a bigger sound. There was no reason for Gigli to go to Melocchi. There was good reason for DelMonaco to go to Melocchi. MDM could not be heard PASSED the 3rd aisle as his wife had mentioned.MDM was Melocchis most successful student which inspired other tenors to study with him, like Gastone Limarilli and GianFranco Cecchele whom both had excellent careers but not as bel canto singers. Enjoy
Are you saying that Gigli's voice sounds bigger than MDM??? From recording and youtube, it sounds otherwise, I have no idea, except I can tell Gigli is masterfully more lyric and more crafted details in everything. But for volume, I thought MDM is huge??? appreciated,

Voz mixta, no falsete 😢
Maybe it was sth similar to Gedda
Franco Corelli,a great artist, said a truth.Gigli has a golden voice, nothing and noone compares to him..
The best singer ever!

Who can sing like this today?. Seen opera all over the world, never found anybody even a little close.
RIP
Yeah man , now it all is about giving a coarse impression to one’s inflatable ego!
Beniamino Gigli was certainly one of the most remarkable voices of the bel canto, and it will always be a pleasure to enjoy his voice.
How lucky are we to be able to come here and listen to that?
the Greatest tenor of all times! Just to mention that he was a close friend of Padre Pio who would walk away in tears when he heard the maestro sing is favourite song......
A man with a voice such as this is irreplaceable . If there is a heaven he must surely be singing there.
No one had a mezza voce quite like Gigli... well maybe Tito Schipa. But Gigli is my favorite because he can bust out powerful high notes, too. Even in his late 60's singing live at Buenos Aires. I know... I too have a small voice which is why Bjoerling is my hero! But the explosion on his high notes...that's electrifying.
What's the matter about the microphones? Your comment shows your ignorance.
when one asks why I love Gigli's voice so much this is one of the hundred or so songs that I use such beauty, control passion and control who in the last 50 years can sing this well dare I say it no one!
Gigli's singing was like flowing gold, free from the effort you feel in most contemporary tenors. Schipa was also great, but with a "smaller" voice, even if very refined and subtle. I agree with most of you; Gigli is the greatest!
Insuperabile ed insuperato nel"falsetto"!!!!

I keep coming back to this recording. Just sheer heaven
One of my all time favorite recordings. A voice of an angel
I completely agree with you! What a beautiful voice! What an outstanding technique! What mastery! It gets me excited to learn.

How did he product such a sweet tone? incredible
It is unreal. What a wonderful rendition.
TROPPE EMOZIONI..GRAZIE BENIAMINO RIMANI NEI NOSTRI CUORI

Nostalgia - it reminds us of what we have lost!
Gili was great and it is always a pleasure to find yet another treasure of his.

Many thanks again for your informations ! I'll keep them .Gigli always moved me ,his voice is incomparable !

Sad that the singer of that time did not have the advanced recording technology.

Thanks for posting this video!. Never saw Gigli on the big screen before.
what a wonderful voice...
Corelli called Gigli's mezza-voce nightingale-like. I'd have to agree.

Gigli said that "this is wery good, but you will have to do a lot of work, to be a great singer."
It is from Luciano biografy (My life)
Marvellous comparison. That's what it is all about!
simplesmente Beniamino Gigli, o maior de todos!!!
Magnificent!
Outstanding!
thank you God...for this man

Leonardo Da Vinci Paints , Benamino Gigli .. SINGS
Oddly, reminds me of Amy Winehouse "unplugged" doing the "Valerie" song on the DL Show. Here at youtube. Soulful.
que falsetes... que maravilla
Gigli occupies a place, perhaps, second only to Caruso!!!
very impressive!
How does this one stand out? Listen everyone else perform this and it's about the singer. Gigli's is about the song. Ends with a nice falsetto instead of belting it out.
perfectly exquisite
