Per Songfacts This is a very personal song written by Sting. He had recently separated from his first wife, actress Frances Tomelty, and was not getting along with the other two members of the band. Instead of repressing or deflecting the hurt, Sting dives headlong into it on this track, crowning himself the "King Of Pain."
Sting said in Musician magazine: "I conjured up symbols of pain and related them to my soul. A black spot on the sun struck me as being a very painful image."
He recalled the specific incident and how future wife Trudie Styler inspired the song's title in Lyrics By Sting: "I was sitting moping under a tree in the garden, and as the sun was sinking toward the western horizon, I noticed that there was a lot of sunspot activity.
I turned to Trudie. 'There's a little black spot on the sun today.'
She waited expectantly, not really indulging my mood but tolerant.
'That's my soul up there,' I added gratuitously.
Trudie discreetly raised her eyes to the heavens. 'There he goes again, the king of pain.'"

That is how I've always interpreted this song, how I felt when the love of my life said she wanted a divorce and how I see myself now that I have a long-term chronic illness that causes me to be in acute pain throughout the day. It seems to be my destiny to be the king of pain.

Most of the imagery used in The Police’s “King of Pain” portrays sorrow, darkness, and pain, contradicting the beautiful and peaceful view of nature. The writer, who uses these natural images to describe his mood appears to be in a vicious cycle of pain and hurt, thus enthroning himself as the king of pain.
The first lines which talk about a black spot in the bright sun and being the same as yesterday implies his moodiness and the fact that he has already experienced a similar loss in the past. He further uses various elements of nature such as treetops, wind, rain, waterfalls, cliffs, spring tides, and spider webs, with each having an attached darkness to signify his state of mind
As he continues, he reveals that his soul is that dark thing stuck in all these natural elements. His soul is dark because it is filled with sadness after experiencing another loss. In the chorus, he emphasizes on his hopes to meet someone who’ll put an end to his sorrow. However, he concludes that it just might be his destiny to experience all the painful emotions in the world.
Sting talks about “King of Pain”
Sting, who explained the song in an interview with Musician Magazine said it was written during the period shortly after his separation from first wife Frances Tomelty. Source from song meanings and facts

@@bigtbone4469 I hope you're doing better these days, I can certainly sympathize with you. I've been contending with mental health issues too, mainly depression and anxiety, for most of my adult life. I found myself plummeting into the abyss of self-imposed darkness like I imagine most people do, through the slippery slope of nihilism. I found the only choices I had was to stay imprisoned by nihilism, and by doing so resign myself to the grave, or be one of the walking dead until I died of natural causes, or I could find an answer to the stark reality that "if nothing matters why bother living". The solution most people choose when confronted by the vastness and seemingly arbitrary nature of existence is to medicate themselves, that being with drugs/alcohol, devoting themselves to a career to distract themselves, or seeking the solace of nurturing partners. I certainly wasn't immune to the allure of those specious strategies, but I was aware enough to know that that would be a band-aid and just a temporary stay to the underlying issues. Like I said earlier, "I hope you're doing better," and that you have found your solutions to life's biggest quandaries, and if you have, congratulations you're one of the rare ones. But in case you're still seeking advice, and if I might be so bold, and presumptuous to let you know my answer…..it's God
If you're interested in more on the story of how a desperate and depraved atheist found comfort and joy just let me know.

Brad did a pretty good job with the lyrics on the first listen! Any time we're hit with the initial feeling of emotional hurt, it feels it's just never gonna end; hence the destiny to be the 'King of Pain'. As a nature lover, all of the descriptions of the beauty in nature juxtaposed with the demise of each creature seriously spoke to me. We could avoid the pain, but then we would never experience the joy. It all goes hand-in-hand.
At 15 years old, this album was EVERYTHING to me! I sat in the floor listening to the album over and over as I read the liner notes and lyrics. Most people were cooing over "Every Breath...", but this song and "Wrapped Around Your Finger" were the two songs I just couldn't get enough of. I loved the imagery of the lyrics to both! I thought you had reacted to "Wrapped..." but I don't see it, so do yourself the pleasure of listening. Listening to the entire album would be even more satisfying, even if you don't react to all. It's just a great album!

I have thought of this song as the narrator having empathy for anything or anyone going through some kind of suffering. Hence the line " thats my soul up there".
But I like Brad's take on it saying that even if we see someone who is surrounded by success and material things or lots of adoring people, we still dont know what is going on inside that person.
I think I remember an interview with Sting explaining that even when he was on top of the world when The Police were at their peak, he felt empty and unhappy. Success was not what he expected it to be. It made it easier to walk away from that when he broke up the band. Lots of people just didn't get it. But if Sting is at peace with his decision, then it was the right thing for him to do.

Ty for getting to this one. It is different for the police, but one of their best. Sting wrote this around a time when he was going through rough patches with relationships (spouse, band mates, etc.) He is describing what he feels through the misfortunes in the song. All the things that are tragic (that's his soul up there). Alanis Morissette does an unplugged acoustic version of this with her beautiful voice. Highly recommend.

Try two of their best vibes together in one reaction video. (One is very short, but so worth a listen) First, Walking On The Moon followed by Voices. (Studio cuts only) The grooves are sick.

He is a man who cannot help but observe all the evil happening in the world and He gets very depressed about it.. He is like a king sitting on a throne surrounded by monitors showing him all the suffering in the world and he wants His rule to end.. But He knows the world has been this way for thousands of years and He has no hope that it will ever get better.. He will always be the King of Pain until he dies. Some people live in ignorant bliss about whats happening in the world.. Some people just don't have any compassion for others. They just don't care.. But some people have a heart and they suffer when they observe the world..

The difference between sadness and depression is the sense it has and always will be thus. This aspect is reflected several times in the lyrics, particularly the ‘same old thing as yesterday’.

This was a written to raise awareness about the destruction we were doing to the environment. Remember in the 1980's certain whales were almost hunted to extinction (so a Save the Whales campaign was started). The Amazon was (and still is) getting destroyed at a rate. Sting was trying to awareness. After he went solo he went down to South America and spent a lot of time there in nature and with the indigenous peoples down there (and wrote Dream of the Blue Turtles).
