What The Kink addressed this best. If the company doesn't sell a shampoo then build up is the company's fault since they promote their brand as a standalone that can be used alone
I feel for everyone that was negatively affected by using Deva curl. I've been natural for 4 years now, and cowashes have not been good enough to cleanse my hair. When my scalp starts to itch even a little I'm breaking out my sulfate Suave shampoo. Your commentary was spot on!❤️
I continued using Devacurl as I didn’t have any issues. I don’t stop using hair products if they’re not affecting me. I can’t stand some fragrances that others love, I don’t expect everyone else to stop using those products.
I used DC products for several years in 2010 with no problem, but quit due to their expense. A couple of years ago, I got back on the same regime that I was on back in 2010. They had changed, so much so that I emailed the company and asked what had changed. They said nothing, but something had. The first time that I used noPoo a few years back, my hair got so strange, that it frightened me and I quit using it. I used their gel and believe in a little longer than the noPoo. They made my hair get stringy, lost my curl pattern and was loosing a lot of hair, so I decided to quit that also. My hair is much better now, after recovering from it, but.....there was something wrong with DC. We should be in tune with our bodies, our hair and our hearts. They will show us..
I'm indifferent to this whole Deva Curl issue because I've never used their products, and I've co-washed once in my almost 4 years of being natural and I quickly realized co-washing isn't for me or my scalp. I think the major underlying problem is we don't know how to properly care for our hair in its natural state, consumerism and capitalism (everyone wants to make money off the natural hair care market) got in the way of us learning how to truly care for and manage our hair. When our hair was relaxed, it was in a much more fragile state yet we didn't use a million and one products, nor was anyone deep conditioning overnight, nor all the other crazy stuff ppl are doing to their natural hair.
I agree 💯 with you and Fine Curls. I used Deva Curls years ago and knew that it wasn't for me. I didn't like the way it smelled or made my hair feel. I clarified and kept it moving. Lo poo and cowashing is not my friend. My hair and scalp need to be super clean.
I purchased the Devacurl Decadence set when it was on sale. I did not like the way it left behind a film on my hair, did not like the smell, and definitely did not like the amount of ingredients in their products. When I see a long list of ingredients I always think some of them are used to counter the affect of another ingredient. The appeal to Devacurl was that many believed it would be the end all/be all for their hair, and they put total trust in them. Business is about money and that's their main goal.
I don't think devacurl is fully responsible. I personally experienced hair loss from using devacurl products. I notice hair loss after the 4th use. What did I do? I stopped! I feel some people weren't listening to their hair..and continued using devacurl disregarding their hair issues. I also think devacurl isn't cleansing enough and is high in protein so eventually this alone is an issue. I feel bad for everyone who is experiencing hair loss but I feel we as consumers should pay close attention to our hair and should put 2 and 2 together.
Excellent comment! I was trying so hard to figure out why these women kept using this product as long as they did. You know after 2 or 3 uses if your hair doesn't like a particular product.
I don’t know why some people think it is ok to cowash only for months & months then put products in the hair Your Hair is Dirty need to shampoo on a regular basis yeah you might see your hair growing from just cowashing but your scalp is also growing fungus from not using shampoo I don’t do cowash I think it is gross I want my hair & scalp clean I shampoo each & everytime I don’t think this is all deva curl’s fault most of it is user error
Most of the people who claim to be losing their hair are white. The product was not designed for them. Devacurl to me work best on natural black hair. Have had no problems with it at all.
Why are people trying to make it a co-washing issue?! If that were the case how come As I am cowashes, Eden Bodyworks cowashes, and all other companies that have cowashes not having the same issues as Devacurl? Seriously, come on guys. And for the last time people who cowash also SHAMPOO their hair, they cowash every other wash day or cowash 2 weeks and then shampoo the next wash day. SMH!
@@ALove4Me, I'm not blaming you. There were just too many people bashing co-washing in the comments. There is too much misinformation. We still don't know the cause of the issues that all these women are having.
I agree with what you said. I've always thought that just co-washing was not enough to totally cleanse your hair over time, and that this could cause some scalp issues down the line. So I have only used co-washing in between shampoo washing as needed. I remember watching a channel called Embrace Natural Beauty about four years ago and she was saying then that co
Clarifying is awesome when needed. However, some have claimed that their curls or coils have loosened chemically after using Deva Curl products. Question: If you suspect that your hair has been texturized or mildly relaxed due to a product that is not supposed to have such chemicals in them, wouldn't seeing a dermatologist or a "scalp specialist" confirm your suspicions?
Wen was also a cleansing conditioner. I have to cleanse with a sulfate shampoo weekly (I weekly wash) due to a scalp condition, and thank God. I have tried CO-washing and sulfate-free but I immediately got a flare-up of my SD, seborrheic dermatitis. It just isn't cleansing enough, and I have a problematic scalp. My mother is extremely dry on the scalp (no flaking) and can go 2/3 months without washing. She even went to the doctor for it and he told her to wash as little as possible. She has no issues, but she also uses a sulfate wash. I think the key here is whether you cleanse well enough or not. I just can't understand how someone with an issue can continue stubbornly to use that product even after issues occur with it. It's somehow beyond me.
It’s like how as a kid I drank milk all the time as a child and after having my daughter I became lactose in tolerance. My husband is allergic to penicillin, it’s an antibiotic that is good for others but it ain’t good for him. I think it’s combination of both the products and user error. There are people who only used the stylers and still seeing the same results. So it’s almost like what is the real problem??? Is it buildup? Is it an ingredient? Storage?
You are absolutely correct that we have to take responsibility with our hair. I had to take responsibility of my hair loss when I was relax. Eventhough I was seeing a beautician every two weeks when I was relax it didn't dawn on me it was the relaxer damaging my hair. I would not put aside that the former beautician knew. I was told hair come out when a person is stressed, hair thin out as you get older, medication cause hair loss, etc. After getting ride of the relaxer in 2018, my hair is growing in thick except at the severe damage area at the crown from the relaxer which cause scarring alopecia with ccca per my dermatologist who told me to stop relaxing and color hair rinse. I was so involved in my employment as it have so many deadlines that I was not paying attention to my hair.
Literally everything you said I have said multiple times to other people as well too I completely agree with everything you laid out Achia. I truly believe that this is predominantly a buildup and user error problem if not I feel like that is the majority of the problem. And just like before in your live stream when I said that a lot of these women having problems with devacurl is because they are blind sheep to an influencer that they follow and watch. They completely go overboard and listen to everything they say as if it's law. Also they are ill-informed on what it means to truly cleanse the hair. Strictly Co washing over time is like applying lotion constantly to dirty skin. For hair to thrive it needs to be cleansed, you need a surfactant one that lathers and that will pick up dirt and oil shampooing should be second nature it should be a given. There are certain people who are lying and just want some clout and are jumping on a bandwagon to bring a brand down just because they have a cult following and high sales. And then there are people who are truly affected by this and want help and deserve compensation but we can't get to the root of that when there are so many people who are just lying. There are so many influencers who have said one thing in the past and are now switching things up. How can you be constantly filming videos saying that your hair is thriving and it feels good. Reviewing other products and then out of the blue say that devacurl is damaging your hair when just a few videos ago you said everything was okay? This is what we have to stop that is horrendous and disgusting Behavior. I'll say it again the definition of insanity is doing the same thing constantly and expecting different results or another outcome. We need to isolate the variable to get to the bottom of the issue. But there are so many different factors to be assessed.
I’m still confused. Not one person has been able to tell me which Deva Curl product(s) caused their hair to fall out. A lot of videos I’ve seen, the women had bleached hair. I’ve had bleached hair before and it’s prone to break off, fall out if you don’t take excellent care of your hair. We all know Deva Curl products contains a lot of protein. So to counter that, you have to make sure you keep your hair thoroughly clean and moisturized. I’m not a jump on the bandwagon person. Before people throw the whole brand away, I think they should wait for more precise information. This was an excellent, fair video.

Personally, when these videos started popping up i got scared and threw out my cleansers and regular conditioners - I kept the deep conditioners for now. The reason I threw my stuff out is because I felt like anything with could have sharp user error like that I couldn't deal with. I'm not very high maintenance about my hair and have had a baby, nursed her and quit. Adding hormonal changes to a temperamental product didn't sit right with me. I'm thankful that I got most of my products in a $40 curlbox. I'd be horrified if i paid full price for each.
