I like that this is specifically addressing first time authors. $10,000 is well outside the budget for many. It makes it seem like to be successful you have to pay to play and have substantial cash reserves to push your book through all the noise. Thanks.
Yeah totally. Being rich basically means getting published. (endless editing, developmental editing, advertising, promoting, paying for reviews, everything). Money is the short-cut to successful publication. But, if your book is not outstanding, all the money in the world will not make it blow up. So it's actually better to be poor, because you will write more heart-felt stories, loved by more people. Getting it out there is the hard part.
I don’t know 10 people much less 100 people who would be willing to take time to read and review my book. These are the same people who couldn’t be bothered to watch a ten minute video that I made on RUclips. Good luck 🍀 getting that!
Also, you can join clubs and communities and take classes to connect with people. You'll be surprised by how many people are interested in your work, and you could even give them a sample to help win them over.
It's just a whole bunch of gatekeepers trying to hold the line. Since more people are writing and more people are reading, they see their pockets get a little lighter, because there's more competition for attention.

Thanks for taking the time to say so, Matt. This is one of my all-time favorite videos and I think your comment will convince more authors to take a look.
I really loved the idea of giving friends and family ARCs for reviews but isn't this against Amazon's TOS? How did you get around this? When you see written reviews on the site, the term "verified purchase" is usually underneath them.
A book or product can have both verified and non-verified reviews. Any reviews from those that didn’t buy the book from Amazon, won’t have the Verified Label on it.
It's absolutely against TOS and Amazon searches for connections and patterns to find reviews that are suspect. You absolutely should not solicit reviews from friends or family. I don't know why she would advocate for that. They'll not only remove the reviews and your product without warning, but they'll lock your whole account.
@@erin9868I was thinking the same thing, and I can't believe no one else is talking about this! Also, you can't "require" anyone to review your book. It must be voluntary. However, it's still very much worth reaching out to as many people as possible in interest groups or other communities that may enjoy your book, giving them a free copy, and following up on/after launch to thank everyone who reads it and leaves a review. That way, you're not begging or pestering anyone to do anything, just offering gratitude and a gentle reminder.
You can do a secret pre-launch for your ARC team 2-3 days before launch, so you can have reviews show up online before or on your official launch day. 👍 Best of luck to you with your launch!

That's the right question to ask. If you give away an ARC, the reader can leave a review, but if they don't purchase a copy, or download a copy from Amazon during a free promotion, their review is not counted as from a verified purchaser.
If you are in tech industry you must read a book called IT WORKPLACE; Surviving Stress, Office Politics, and Protecting Your Health in the Corporate World.

I literally just got finished watching the 2hr training video for Library of Congress chip service job. I know what to write, couldn't I just do it myself? Am I missing something... THANKS!
I learned a lot from your video! Question: is it possible to market my would be self-published philosophy book even if I'm only an autodidact with no connections with the academe?
As a marketer, your biggest issue will be finding your target audience. Once you find that audience you will be able to market to them effectively. I’d try contacting podcasts like they mentioned, sharing it on social media philosophy forms and see where that takes you!
Not exactly. Honest reviews given in exchange for a free Advanced Reader Copy does not vioulate Amazon's review policy. The review isn't from a verified purchaser, but the review isn't in vioulation of an Amazon policy.
Asking your friends for reviews is kinda rigging it too isn't it? I mean from the reader's point of view they are hoping that the reviews are real and genuinely motivated and will not know that you have started a campaign for deliberate reviews - so there is a trust issue there. Perhaps I need to be more realistic as there is probably no ideal world where people will just stumble across your book and write a review. Maybe, the answer is as is discussed, ask for HONEST reviews, but good friends do bias it in your favour and what's more I can see that in reading the reviews - so it's more complex than that. The preorder tip is good too and I like how you jump out of the interview to explain.
