Was in my blind a few years back when i noticed the tell tale hump of a snake in the floor of it. After exiting and lifting up one side, found a big ol black snake..
why ? What are you saying you only rifle hunt. So I’m assuming you woulda shot at it point blank with a 3006 ?? Or would u back up 100yds then shoot the snake ? Ever consider a side arm like a pistol ???
Despite the hundreds and hundreds of times I have hunted in SE Georgia, I have never seen a rattlesnake in the wild (saw one once in south Texas at friends lease). Was expecting just once to hear that dreaded rattling especially when hunting out of a ground blind but never did. Fishing is another story especially the beaver swamps. Shared a dry log with a water moccasin once. Both of us content to stay on our side of the log. Saw some here and there. Never a rattlesnake. Go figure.
Count that a blessing! I have probably had a dozen or so run-in’s with diamond backs and an occasional timber rattler. Usually I am content to part ways with them but given the location of this one, I had to dispatch of him!
I had a close encounter with one at the back side of our pasture a couple of years ago. The dog spooked at it or else I might have stepped on it. I killed it and my son talked me into eating it. Fried it up and it wasn't bad at all!
I have eaten one before, it wasn’t horrible but I’m sure it could have been prepared better than what I did! Glad you didn’t step on it…would have made for a bad day!
I say every year im going to get some good snake boots and never have! We do have rattlers in NE Ok but where I hunt its copperheads and cottonmouths I fear I will have join me in my blind!
For years I would not hunt in the warm months without snake boots, however I have gotten a little lazy and not wear them. My mother works at the local hospital and a kid got bite by a rattlesnake last week, the kid survived but the anti-venom is about $10k and has limited availability. Much cheaper to buy a pair of boots.
I hunt NE Oklahoma, see plenty of timber rattlers and copperhead. I have snake boots and wear them early bow. We saw a rattlesnake lying on the road and the temperature was freezing!! I have a Pic of a copperhead crawling between my boots muzzleloader hunting sitting on a stool. Be careful out there!

@@G2GO_outdoors Sheesh! I'm in Pike County and I know that rattlers are as close as Thomaston. Probably some here but I haven't seen any in my 20 yrs here. A few copperheads, though. I'm in the woods a lot, so I hope there's none this far North. Be careful! Like the video.
I have hunted all over Georgia and Tennessee as I was born in Georgia.8 years ago Turkey hunting in Wayne County I killed one bigger than that had 15 rattles. I was wearing Snake boots and Snake Chaps. Why take a chance.
The only thing bad about bow season is the warm weather hot weather the insects. the snakes not a problem watch where you step and or wear your leggings.
I try to for the biggest part…I do have young kids that like to hunt and I host a hunt each year for disabled kids and I allow them to shoot a few smaller bucks but I do try to trophy manage!
Usually I would have just let him go, but I have a group of kids hunting these stands next weekend and can’t afford to take the risk. I am not in the business of relocating those guys!
Most people who get bit by venomous snakes are messing with them in some way. As nice as the idea seems, unless someone is an expert in handling snakes, it's dangerous advice to suggest that anyone try to "relocate" one. The best advice is to leave them alone unless, as in this case, they're in an area where humans or pets will frequent. As the old saying goes, better safe than sorry.
Good question…I spend a lot of time studying trail camera pictures and video and try to determine which ones are the mothers and which ones are not. I prefer to shoot what I call “last year’s fawns”, they are typically 80-90 pounds and are not proven mothers yet. So when you see a group, they will be the does without spots but not the biggest in the group. With that said, our season is designed that the fawns, even with spots “should” be able to fend for themselves if their mother is removed. Our rut starts early October so the dilemma is to shoot a doe with a fawn present or shoot a doe that is pregnant! I just try and make the best judgement call I can!
@@G2GO_outdoors its always a hard decision, I had a big healthy doe come out and I took her with a crossbow, 2 fawns then came out of the woods after I shot her, the window to decide was short, that said in hindsight I agree when the spots are almost done they should be able to defend for themselves and take up with another group. thanks for the content.
