Stunning fall leaves without crowds - PLUS a moose

  • I managed to drive the entire Kancamagus Highway in central New Hampshire, legendary for its colorful Fall leaves, with hardly any other people or cars around. The 32-mile highway through the White Mountains is usually bumper-to-bumper during the "leaf-peeping" season, but I went a week or two before the peak. The leaves were astounding, and some even say better, at this earlier date because there was still a bit of green mixed in with the oranges, yellows, and vivid reds. And just to make it better, I made sure to wake up very early and get there as the sun was coming up. What I found was a quiet beauty, ethereal fog, explosively vibrant vistas... and almost no other people whatsoever. Very, very few people get a natural show as good as this in such a private and personal atmosphere.
After this energizing morning, my travel partner and I completed a winding and extremely enjoyable drive all the way over to Rutland, Vermont. The back roads we stuck to gave us charming little towns (one even had coffee!) and some classic covered bridges. And finally - FINALLY - there was that moose on the side of the road...

When I was a kid growing up in New Hampshire, this highway would be closed as soon as the first snowfall hit. Not plowed until Spring thaw. We'd take a family road trip and one of us kids would inevitably take a slip and fall in the Swift River (melted snow) and stop for a picnic lunch.

That was a planted moose. LOL
Beautiful colors. I use to live in extreme northern Michigan. Fall colors there were outstanding in the fall. Canadian border only 20 miles from there. Aye eh.

I live here in Moultonborough. You were just a couple miles from me when you enjoy yourself at the Foothills Cafe. Interesting how you pronounce "Kancamagus". We just call it the "Kanc". You didn't give the history of the Kanc how it was built in the 1930's under one of FDR's programs. You also discivered all the Route 113's. We joke which 113 are you talking about. Anyways, I enjoyed you persective of our area and glad that you enjoyed yourself. OH...BTW. When you were at the traffic light at the end of RT 112 and you took a right. Had you gone left into Conway you would have found coffee in less than two minutes.

@ True but since the search was for coffee, that was two minutes at the Sweet Maple Cafe. Check it out when you come back. 😊

Ha that's funny about the 113s. Yeah I figured there was more to Conway than that one intersection but I was anxious to turn towards Rutland so I left coffee up to the travel gods rather than common sense ...!

you should never follow or chase after a moose or any wildlife like you did, can be incredibly dangerous for you if they get aggressive and dangerous for them
