Why Car Crash Tests Need A Crucial Update - Cheddar Explains

- In February 2022, over 65 congressional members sent a letter to Secretary Buttigieg and the Department of Transportation urging the agency to update certain safety standards when it comes to crash testing. So, what exactly are advocates calling for and why do they say our crash tests need a major update?

What I find most surprising of all, as a European, is the complete lack of mandatory teaching and learning to be done. My US girlfriend had no verified teaching lessons with a professional, just did some studying, passed the tests, and drove a little with parents and that is it. Meanwhile I spent months taking theoretical courses, and driving with a driving instructor as is mandatory. Also of course driving with parents, and eventually taking a far tougher pair of tests to prove my skill, far tougher at least compared to my US girlfriend's experience. The unfortunate side effect is then of course the cost of this 'package' being around the neighborhood of 50x more expensive, but the safety numbers speak for themselves.
Unfortunately the government would never get away with demanding harsher testing requirements for drivers licencing. USA cities are too car centric with insufficient public transport, and a chronic lack of any walkability. everyone must be able to drive or mobility is impossible people would not be able to work and the US economy would quickly grind to a halt. Europe has a major advantage in city density and the poverty after ww2 did not allow as massive a car culture in the 1950's-1970's as in the USA or North America in general.
In which state does your girlfriend live? I had to do 30 hours of theoretical courses with 2 tests at each meeting. 7 hours with a driving instructor with the last hour being the final test. Before this I first had to do my 40 hours (not sure if it's this exact number) with my parents with multiple hours being done after sundown. Although more learning is always great it will not help if you don't pay attention while driving, which is a major problem in the US. At my meetings the instructors always showed us multiple videos crash videos of drivers not paying attention.
@@kaymish6178 NY lets you take the driving test online, I read an article there was tons of cheating
Same story in Canada. Ontario let new drivers learn without any professional coaching. The road behavior of Ontarians drivers is a joke : over speed, zig zaging, never use turn light, you name it.
Lol in my country you don’t even have to take a test, just pay $60 and you’re good 😂
Well i knew driving in the us was more dangerous than driving in the UK but not that you guys had 5 times the fatalities per capita. Even accounting for the fact you drive twice as many miles on average as we do that is still a big gap.
Driving test standards in the US are shockingly bad in most states compared to EU standards. This is even more obvious with Motorcycle test standards! I expect that contributes quite significantly to the high fatality rate.
Compared to the Netherlands the US is 36% (4.7 vs. 7.3 per 1 billion vehicle miles) to 3.2 times (3.8 vs. 12.4 per 100,000 inhabitants) deadlier. And that includes bicycle deaths in the case of the Netherlands. In 2021 582 people died in traffic in total. 175 of which cars and 207 being cyclists. 80 cyclists being people over 60 years old. Old people on e-bikes very often get into one-sided accidents and die. That might sound bad but the life expectancy of Dutch people is currently 82.01 vs 81.2 for the UK and 78.79 for the USA.
I took my driver's test at 25 in Florida and this was with only 8 hours of driving experience overall, through a driving school. The test lasted probably 20 minutes or less and was extremely simple. "Park here. Make a three-point turn. Make a left here. How do you park in a hill? Ok, you passed." Very low standards. No wonder Florida drivers suck so bad.
Just checked the Wikipedia page.
Deaths per 1 billion vehicle-km:
Denmark: 3.9
Finland: 5.1
France: 5.8
Germany: 4.2
Ireland: 3.8
Switzerland: 3.2
Netherlands: 4.7
UK: 3.4
US: 7.3
Czech Republic: 11.5
You're ok Czechia?
Czechia is the third highest. Beaten by South Korea with 13.8 and Mexico with 27.5.
The European safety standards testing is more up to date than the US ones, you can use that if the same model is available in both areas. The European one also has its issues though
The same dummies are used worldwide, as Humanetics is a global manufacturer of them.
@@codylau7718 Yep I guess that's one of the ongoing issues the OP was talking about.

Too be fair, cars are quite safe overall for the driver. It is time to focus on pedestrians and cyclists!
Cars are safer than ever. But, because of all those safety things, people are not learning how to drive. The car can guide and brake itself, until you have to take over.
In my opinion it is all down to a person’s personality. Like some people are just wild drivers and some people are cautious drivers. When I use features such as adaptive cruise control I am even more aware as my eyes can do more (maybe had explanation lol). But some people just fall asleep when these systems are on
Also if you want to know why so many Americans die in car crashed, don't forget the ecar centric infrastructure, stroads and car sizes.

That is not a problem. The problem is that so many do not want to learn that.

Short answer: SUVs & pickup trucks.
Midsize answer: crash tests haven’t yet fixed obesity.
long answer: Don't build your transportation like a fucking death row!
Crashes are fixing obesity problems....by killing the fat people in car crashes
Unfortunate answer: actually make learning how to drive mandatory with proper teaching and testing
Easy answer: Don't make your area car reliant. Have good public transportation
@@coolboss999 I think this is the best solution, even as a car guy myself. Quite a few times, driving is not the best solution.
It also feels like people are WAY more reckless on the road nowadays.

Exactly I live in South Florida I avoid/almost get into an accident 1-4 times a day
300+ lbs Karens need to get their chicken sandwich(s) in their commercial grade pick-up trucks.
All Americans should only be given Wal-Mart rascal scooters to get around. We need to be shaming the obese or at least leave them vulnerable to road rage attacks.
Less fatties = a stronger America
There are some other reasons for crash deaths like the speed limits in roads which are determined in a very old fashioned and unscientific way according to contemporary standards. And if SUV cars are more lethal for pedestrians as said in this video, then driving them must be limited inside cities.
That's why gas prices are so high. It's a vice tax, like on cigarettes.
But obese Americans want giant vehicles.
They should only be given Wal-Mart rascal scooters and they should have to start the motor by cranking the shaft for 2 minutes to get some cardio in.
We need to be doing more fat shaming in America. It's now an economic issue.
In general, the governing body must recommend changes to the manufacturer and put a contract in place. Making a new dummy must be designed in house by the government, then the manufacturer can make whatever you want.
Just in general the design of the 5% female, 25% male, and 50% male should account for the 5%-80% female, if no other factors are accounted for. Seat belt design is a major factor that is being tested by some automakers because belt slip across the female torso is different than in males. This may make dummies more expensive with bodies that experience less use (not a factor for crash safety, but it’s important to note as an engineering problem).
Changing a dummy mechanics to fit a female body type is going to be challenging since the design is essentially just a bolted steel beam with bearings for pivots, not a complex internal body shape. It’s all going to have to be redesigned from the ground up with more expensive manufacturing methods.
It’s also so easy to misdirect to other factors in crashes. I see some comments talking about bad drivers and other factors that realistically don’t statistically affect whether a car is safe in a crash vs operator safety and factors of speed. In the end, speed, impairment, etc. should come out in the wash compared to overall crash injury across all accidents.
I wonder if the engineers at Global NCAP in Europe also done research into better crash test dummy designs.
I really think the computer model could really help consumers make safer buying decisions. Imagine looking up a safety rating that is calculated by entering your height, weight, age, gender, and body type and receiving a score that is specifically calculated for your body. This could be a revolutionary idea!
Even better, operational costs too. Factor in environment, purpose, typical payload, etc. to determine the suitable vehicle.
I believe choosing lowest bone mineral density is essential , if not done already.
I think reducing crashes is a more important task, but better safety is always a good choice.
Ralph Nader’s book “unsafe at any speed” is a rebuttal to the idea that auto manufacturers were telling consumers it was their interest to drive safely, not the auto maker to make cars safer.
Both aspects are important, but it’s also important to recognize that both are mutually exclusive.
@@mrs_radrod I didn't mean improving driver education. Though I approve of that as well. I meant designing safer roads. We can have less accidents if we stop only blaming drivers and start thinking about how the built environment influences driver choices and collisions.
You know how you stop motor vehicle deaths? Transit oriented road design and reliable public transportation
The average American woman weighs 170 lbs?!?!?!
NHTSA is outdated, but there’s also the IIHS, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, that runs their own testing for things like off-set frontal crashes (only part of each car hits the other, that can show flaws in the front end where if too much crash energy hits only the driver’s side, the injuries to the driver will be much worse. They also test crashing into a pole or bollard at speed, hitting a stationary wall or a parked truck, etc. Their ratings are much more comprehensive.
and sticking to a worthless 40 mph which needs to be 55 at least
Once again Europe is decades ahead of the US.
America is still number 1 though
Kind of weird you mention the 50th male (170 pounds) but not the 95 male (225 pound) dummies. Also nobody's really told the dummy manufacturer that they need to make larger dummies to reflect on changed averages. I'm sure once they're told they need to have updated dummies they absolutely would, and they should. Who's going to fund the development of the new dummies? It would take a long time too.
It's easy to say the things that need to be updated but almost noone talks about the logistics need to make it happen.
"Nobody told the dummy manufacturer...." They are making 100 lbs woman dummies yet their company probably has many, many 300 lbs women working for them. That is an internal company problem.
@@toolbaggers There are obese dummies already developed. They have developed many different models for specific needs of specific industries. They've made a pregnant model, obese, and elderly.
the fact remains the STANDARD models of dummies were never changed. doing so would be a huge undertaking but it could be done, it just won't be cheap. development of new dummies takes years.
Long time to make different size dummies? Lol

It seems like we're paying more for features we will likely never use and many of us do not want. As often happens with these things, the list, and cost, just keeps growing.
Car seats definitely don't fit female bodies--especialy in a large vehicle like a truck. We have a large truck and I am 5 foot 4 inch female who weighs 168 pounds. Sitting in the passenger seat, my feet don't touch the floor. I put a small tool box on the floor for a foot rest. When I drive, I have to pull the seat all the way forward to reach the gas and brakes. That puts me right on top of the steering wheel. And the seat belts on every car I've ever owned or driven have always had the curse of crossing over my boobs in an uncomfortable position. If we were in a wreck, the seatbelts would squash and seriously injure one boob. Oh yeah, we own a big ass truck because we own a big ass camper.
It's unfortunate that manufacturers don't make different seats for different people or at least make them more adjustable. But one can see the it's mostly for economic reasons that they do that. They aim to accommodate most but not all people.
Get a jumbo child seat.
Most American kids are about your size nowadays.
Would you buy a bicycle that is too big for you? So why drive a car that is too big, with the added danger to others of not seeing them over the dashboard?
@@GrahamCrispin59 She literally explained that in the last sentence
It's an injustice to anyone who's lost a family member to an automotive accident (myself included).
All the effort that goes into airline safety totally overshadows car safety in the US.
If a car breaks down, 9/10 times you walk away. If a plane breaks down, 1/10 you walk away, maybe.
@@growtocycle6992 Plane breaks down doesn't necessarily mean crash. But yes, if it is did crash it is still 1/10. Ironically, this resulted more rigorous pilot training that their road counterparts.
There is a whole line of argument that women's dummies don't represent women and IMMEDIATELY after describing what an average woman actually is, the "male" crash test dummy is one pound heavier and one inch taller. So. Like. Okay I see that we have this issue handled.
Unfortunately weight isn't the only issue. Did you miss the part about distribution of forces being different based on bone structure? The fact that the male dummy is 5 inches taller than the average female also means he can sit farther away from the steering wheel and the airbag. Women have smaller necks as well. We can go in on just anatomy alone. The truth is, the standards are horribly outdated and need to be improved sooner rather than later.
Alternate/Real title: American Car Crash Test Have A Major Flaw
TLDR title; America bad
i think that euro ncap has a simular problem
The dummy problem is kind of worldwide. You can argue that obesity numbers are higher in the USA compared to the EU, meaning the old dummies fit the average EU male better, but that's about it.
The most shocking thing in this video is the average woman is 5’4” and 170 pounds. “MAN THE HARPOONS”
Female 5 ft 4 and 170 lb I really really hope that the typos in y'all met 107 lb
So we’re just going to pretend IIHS doesn’t exist in this video?
That’s why I follow the IIHS
The average American woman (20 y/o and older) weighs 77 kg?
You haven't even mentioned IIHS, that is actually better than European standards, only focused, again, on "gender" issues.
There should be an option to limit how fast you're going so even when you floor it that's how fast you go
Just use your cars speed limiter. But tbh I find that as a safety concern. I tried it out on my new car and when entering a motorway it didn’t pick up the 110km sign so when I stepped on the gas my car wouldn’t go past 60km. Never using that again

Automobile safety is one of the great public health achievements of the 20th century, but there's always room for improvement. Auto deaths used to be quite a bit higher with far less cars on the road.
In addition to US not having any mandatory training, and arbitrary Speedlimits on US roads - i think a big factor is "not having to drive on the right lane"
Like slowest to the right, fastest to the left. Its not that hard, and eliminates most of the lane switching and dangerous swerving
I've seen plenty of "slower vehicles keep right " signs
Main reason for increased car crash deaths is distracted drivers from cell phones. Was not discussed in this video. Pls make a vid about this issue and ways that auto manufacturers, US states and countries other than USA are addressing it.
Every video on every topic, i see America lagging behind (except housing costs, education costs, healthcare costs, and gun deaths - not something to be proud of). I suppose when you think you're the greatest, you never try to improve.
Yeah America, Russia, and China.
No one likes them.
If I'm elected Emperor of Earth, I promise to launch them all into to the sun.
Careful, gun nuts might come after you
the guy was saying dummies. reminded me of how they occasionally use cadavers
I wish you'd gone more in depth on why there's more female injuries and deaths in car accidents, not just the theory of it being due to pelvic bone structure. There's a lot more to unpack there: Seatbelts and boobs is an issue. It never feels like the belt is in the right place, whether it goes between them or over them, where it then cuts into your neck. When plus size, the belt should go under your belly not over, but this isn't widely known or taught. Pregnant bellies is a whole other question.
Similarly, headrests don't take into account the impact of long hair worn up, like a bun or ponytail, that completely changes the way your head hits the headrest at high impact speeds. Many of us are still expected to wear high heels to be "professional" which impedes your ability to drive. Childcare still often falls largely on women, meaning we're more likely to be distracted while driving, not to mention running on less sleep.
You could literally do an entire video on this.
Can you do a video on how some car get 6 airbag as standard in Europe, usa while they have just 2 airbag in African, Indian, s.asian countries. Many cars stucture has been deemed unsafe compared to their European counterpart, yet they cost just as much. EX : Kia seltos GNCAP 3 star vs 5 for Asean ncap,
Suzuki Swift- 2 stars GNCAP | 4 stars ENCAP
Did you take into account that older cars with less safety features can be involved in crashes?
That is true but by time those cars get replaced and the other option is that cars would need to be replaced every 3 years to stay up to date.
Also that Americans are so fat that they're affecting the physics of the impact? More mass = more damage = more injury.
The main problem is we should be using real people not mannequins
Very controversial but I agree 🤝
We did that in the past actually.
Why not start by adopting the Euro NCAP if it's so much better?
Bruh. IIHS
Just ignore IIHS 😢
Keep in mind these are destructive tests. Every time they test a crash it costs them a car, probably at a significantly higher cost than the car would cost to manufacture en mass once it goes into full production. That imposes certain limits to what they're willing to do in testing. The don't want to use every dummy type doll in every position to see how well each one holds up to every crash and limiting the range of dolls reduces the number of tests that they need to do. I'm not saying there isn't room for improvement in how things are done but if you already have to do 40-50 tests wrecking at least one exceptionally expensive car in every test you're going to be motivated to find other ways to get that data.
Put the onus of the cost on car companies - make passing the safety tests at a high enough level a legal requirement to sell the car commercially.
@@keyholes that's already the case.
Some older people pooh-pooh new safety attempts partly because they know it will cost more money but also because of their resentment of younger people and partly because they want to look tougher than the kind of people concerned with safety. They suffer from survivor bias when they say "back in my day we didn't need this kind of safety and I survived just fine compared to these weaklings and their regulations." The kind of people that say these things tend to not even know what survivor bias is and resent the changes in society.
That 50 percentile for women would vary from country to country. Same with men.
Doing some rough math. Annually an American has a 1 in 6000 chance of dieing in a road accident. A Brit has a 1 in 20,000 chance. Non wonder your most popular motorsports are either driving in a circle or in a straight line 🤣🤣🤣

Great. Ignore contribution of tech altogether from increased cellphone usage to the effects of digital dashboard and infotainment to driver's attention leading to accidents.
Most drivers' licenses may belong to women but men do most of the actual driving. i.e. truckers, taxi, uber, bus, chauffeurs or when a family or a couple drive together, it's usually the man that drives. One male trucker might drive the equivalent of 1000 regular women.

What about trans-gender women?
They still have features of a man or they changed their body to a woman, so this question is irrelevant. How about we talk about disabled people instead of something that's already solved?
IIHS: Are you kidding me?
It's so disappointing that EVERY story about progress runs into the "there IS a cost" brick wall. Funding is often the line between us and a brighter future.
I wonder is Global NCAP doing research into this. After all, they do a lot of crash testing themselves.

Here’s thing. Are federal safety standards outdated? Probably. Should consumers be concerned about it? No! For over three decades the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety have conducted crash tests on almost all new cars sold in the US. They update their tests regularly and have included female dummies in their crash tests as well. You can go to their RUclips channel for their own crash tests ruclips.net/user/iihs The implicit/explicit point being made by this video is that because US govt crash tests aren’t as tough as European ones, new cars are less safe. This is simply untrue. If anything the combination of govt crash tests and iihs crash tests are just as demanding as, if not more exacting than, European ones. If you want safe cars, check out both NHTSA and IIHS ratings.
it’s obviously not “if not more exacting than, european ones”
US roads compared to the ones in the European Union are 2-6 times deadlier per capita (depending on country, USA is 12.4, whereas Sweden is 2.2 for example). I think vehicle design and testing is at least part of the problem.
