Elton John was in his band, as Reginald Dwight; he was the piano player; but adopted the name Elton John from band members Elton Dean and Long John Baldry. I believe the band name was Bluesology.

I was so surprised (and happy) to see you were reacting to Long John Bladry. I was lucky enough to see him around 1971 or '72 in Spokane, Washington, at the old Kennedy Pavilion at Gonzaga University. He had his entire band there, horns and all. He was the warm up band for either The James Gang or Quick Silver Messenger Service, can't quite remember which one. But I'll never forget Long John. He got his nickname because he's something like 6'7" tall or there about. Love you guys!

I grew up in Vancouver and in the '80s Long John was friends with my buddies parent's...he would pull out an acoustic guitar and entertain us solo several times. He lived in a penthouse apartment close to Kitsilano Beach and would invite us over to watch the summer fireworks from his patio....great story teller and a real "proper" British chap..!

I'd never heard Long John Baldry's music as a 17 yr old in 1977. Knew Elton had played with him though. So I bought an LP called "The Best of the British Invasion" and on it was his song, Let the Heartaches Begin. Not my favorite on the album, but I'd heard someone new. I still have, and play, that album 😊 This song, however, is delicious.

Boy does that bring back some great memories. Baldry was living in Canada in the '80s. Every summer he would come and play the bar circuit in Atlantic Canada. Myself in a group of friends would chase him around from bar to bar. Even in small bars he had an amazing sound with an amazing backing band. a true artist. That was real music. He is also the someone in Elton John's Someone Saved My Life Tonight. I sure do miss those times and his music. Rest in peace John I sure do miss you. Thanks I truly enjoyed this show

All right! Jay and Amber, the two of you were actually groovin' out to that song. Mr. Baldrey was born in England but in the early 80's he moved to the Canadian East coast. after staying there for a while he moved west to the Vancouver area but recorded a lot of his later albums in Alberta at a studio called Stoney Plain Records. (A lot of Canadian bands and a few American bands used that Studio ) i actually ran into him once at the Studio , another band was setting up and needed a specific mic that the company I worked for had in stock. I delivered the Mic and was about to leave when I turned around and almost ran into him.

He was called Long John for a good reason, being 6'7" tall, and at one time or another Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, and Jack Bruce were all in his band. And he shared the stage with most of the great musicians in and around London in the '60's including Rod Stewart, Elton John, Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Pete Sears, and Dave Ball. Hardly anybody remembers him now, more's the pity, but he was one of the best back in the day.

This is the song that kick-started my journey down the Boogie Woogie rabbit hole. Back in the '70s I was a rocker, but Boogie Woogie was my guilty pleasure when no one else was around and I put on the headphones. It also lead to an exploration of Ragtime and a burning desire to play the piano. I never did learn the piano which is possibly one of my biggest life regrets.

Boogie Woogie and Ragtime require very nimble fingers and mine are starting to cramp up with the early stages of arthritis. Sure, I could probably learn to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star quite well but that's not the same.

Feeling dejected, he went downtown, where he ran into a friend. His friend told him about someone playing at the Paramount Theater, so they went to that. It was Long John Baldry. And I got to chat a bit with him afterwards as he autographed the copy of his latest CD that I had purchased. Sadly, he has since passed away. He did leave us a lot of great music and maybe even greater influence. Check out his bands over the years: you'll see some familiar names.

Rod Stewart was one of the producers on this album, I bought this album when it came out and still have it. So it was a big thrill in the mid 80's when we met him before he preformed at the David Thompson Motor Inn in Kamloops one Halloween night. Great night, awesome dude, he really liked it here in BC and had moved to Vancouver just the year before I think. Good times.
'It Ain't Easy' next please. You'll notice an amazing singer with John. 'Kathi McDonald' John sang with her for 35 years.
'Long John Baldry + Kathi McDonald - You've Lost That Loving Feeling' look for the 5:27 min RUclips.
Also for a female Friday try 'Kathi McDonald - I'd Rather Go Blind'. She should have been way bigger. She sang with Baldry for 30+ years, she replaced Janis Joplin in Big Brother & The Holding Co, after Janis died as well.
    Cheers.

It was early to mid 70s when I was surprised to see Long John Baldry play a local pub in the Cowichan Valley. He was spending time on Saltspring Island where other musicians and artists of all kinds were making pilgrimmages to this Hippy Haven. Many came here from Big Sur cuz it got too commercialized. Long John would take the Crofton Ferry and do a surprise performance in Chemainus, or Crofton, or Maple Bay...I only caught him once, but he did these free shows for a year or so before he moved on. So glad we had him for awhile...I know he had a great and long songlist, but to the general public, this song represents probably THE BEST one hit wonder of ALL time... The story is fine, but when the band cuts in, well it's the kind of thing that gets you out of your seat and onto the dance floor...Long John was the guy that encouraged Elton and Bernie to "come out" and started them on their lucrative careers...Rod Stewart learned to be a performer watching this man work the stage...

Hello Amber and Jay. So thrilled you discovered Long John Baldry. I had the great pleasure of seeing him as a young university student in small Ontario town back in the mid 70s. We knew about his backstory a bit which somebody commented on below. Yeah he had Elton John and Rod Stewart in a band before they were famous. Whoa! Let that sink in. Elton John took the John name because he so respected him. Anyway, he was tall, and when he sang, you just couldn't believe his voice. Just like you heard. A rockin' vibe to the max. His song Everything stops for Tea is very different from this, but also a joy. I think that was the name of the album, which I actually had, but who knows where it went to. I continue to love your show after three years . Your genuineness and wholesomeness are just so easy. Regards from Northern British Columbia.

Great to hear you play this and I really enjoyed your reactions. 1957 is mentioned early, a year before I was born, and it was an important time in the British discovery and application of American blues artists. The piano style is called, Stride. It suggests strolling and talking which fits with this great shaggy dog of a story. In addition to all the other musicians mentioned here, Rod Stewart was in his band, too. For a completely different story told well in music try, 'God's Own Drunk.' Later covered by JImmy Buffet.

Woot woot!~ SO tickled to see you two delving into Long John Baldry. He tended to be more popular in the UK than in the US, but he's got all kinds of great stuff in his catalogue. A little trivia: he took the name "Long John" because he was a tall dude, ~6'7". Then Elton John took "John" as his surname in honor of Long John Baldry. He has a really pretty ballad called "Flying" that you should definitely check out!

Long John Baldry was Sugarbear in Elton John's song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" talking Elton out of an illadvised marriage that would have stunted Eltons career

When he decided to no longer be Reginald Dwight, the "John" in Elton's new name was a tribute to Long John Baldry. Elton came from Bluogy sax player Elton Dean.

      @shyman99 9 дней назад +2

This is not accurate, although it is mentioned everywhere. Sugarbear is the person he is breaking up with. Not the person who talked him into the break up. When you read the lyrics, he is addressing the person he is breaking up with:
"Someone saved my life tonight, sugarbear. You almost had your hooks in me. Didn't you dear....".
If sugarbear would have been Long John, then the lyric would have instead said, "Sugarbear saved my life tonight".

@@shyman99 Not correct. I've seen this corroborated from several sources. Baldry was Sugar Bear. BTW there was another person there in that story - Bernie Taupin "My friends out there". Friends - plural. In fact, the name of the woman he broke up with is known and she's been interviewed. She's kind of bitter.

Did not hear much from Long John for years , then about a decade latter he released a song called A THRILL IS A THRILL . Worlds apart . Worth a listen however .

When Elton John sang the tune "Someone saved my life tonight", that "someone" he was referring to was Long John Baldry. Long John Baldry performed with Eric Burdon, Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, and Elton John. "Baldry's Out" is a good tune as well.
