I saw Mavis Staples in concert last year. She was in her 80’s!!!!!!! She had us all ROCKING!!!! “ I’ll Take You There “ and Respect Yourself are anthems!!!!
The Staples remind me of home, soul food, love, and family...and the 70's. I was a small baby, but EVERYBODY in the black community, that we knew, no matter how cool, they loved Mavis Staples and the Staple Singers. Stax Records was the sound of the hood - bbqs and block parties, you'd here this and my all time favorite, "Come Go With Me." Just magical, positive, and optimistic.🥰🥰🥰
The female lead is Mavis Staples. She still performs and occasionally puts out new albums. If you listen to Michael Jackson's song "Bad", he got the "shamone" from Mavis. Pops Staples didn't want to sing this song at first, the group mostly sang gospel & message songs. Curtis Mayfield, who produced this, had to convince Pops to record it. Pops also plays guitar. The Staple Singers first started Mavis was around 10 and she already had a deep singing voice. On another note, The Partridge Family are not a real family. They're actors on a TV show. But they were based on a real family group called The Cowsills.
This song was written by Curtis Mayfield for the movie soundtrack "Let's Do It Again" starring Sydney Poitier and Bill Cosby. They made three movies together, the two others are "Uptown Saturday Night" and A Piece Of The Action". "Let's Do It Again" is the sequel to "Uptown Saturday Night". These movies are very funny, you should give them a look.😅
HELL YEAH, The Staple Singers featuring THE GREAT MAVIS STAPELS! MAVIS STAPLES has more SOUL in her pinkie toe than most people have in their whole bodies! 😊 GREAT VIDEO! GREAT REACTION!
The Staple Singers with Let's Do It Again hit #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 the week of December 27, 1975. The rest of the top 10 that week: 1) Let's Do It Again - The Staple Singers 2) Saturday Night - Bay City Rollers 3) That's The Way ( I Like It) - KC & The Sunshine Band 4) Love Rollercoaster - Ohio Players 5) Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To) - Diana Ross 6) I Write The Songs - Barry Manilow 7) Convoy - C.W. McCall 8) Fox On The Run - Sweet 9) Fly, Robin, Fly - Silver Convention 10) I Love Music (Part 1) - The O'Jays
FYI - Sly and The Family Stone were largely family. Sly's brother Freddie played guitar, sister Cynthia played trumpet and bassist Larry Graham is a cousin.
Yes!! If I had anything to do with you picking this song, I'm so honored! This was also the title of a GREAT comedy with Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby.
Thank goodness you’re listening to the Staple Singers , you heard them before with the group The Band and you loved them then!!! 1. I’ll Take You There 2. Respect Yourself
The Staple Singers began their career singing gospel in the churches of Chicago in 1948. They had many gospels hits in the 50's and 60's but decided to go mainstream around 1970. Their first 2 singles were smash hits, "Respect Yourself" and I'll take You There". If you do "Respect Yourself", check out the live performance at the Wattstax festival.
When you get a chance, play "Respect Yourself" and "I'll take you there" by the Staple Singers. You will really enjoy hearing Dad Staples play his bass guitar, Jay and Amber. Have a blessed day. ❤
This song was later than I remembered it being, from 1975. This early to mid-seventies sound is their best known stuff, with 1971's "I'll Take You There" being maybe their best known song, but in the 1950s they put out some absolutely stellar gospel stuff, featuring their father's incredible atmospheric guitar work and the girls' soul-stirring vocals. 1959's "I'm Coming Home" and 1954's "This May Be My Last Time" are great examples of this. Their late sixties movement music is also good, songs like "Got To Be Some Changes Made" from 1968 and their cover of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" from 1967. (And Sly and the Family Stone were sort of a family group, but only because the core of the group was Sly Stone and his sister - both from Denton, Texas, by the way, not far south of y'all.)
i grew on this song played around the house my mother love the staple singers they had good songs in 1970' and the 1980's also they made you forget your trouble's with there music.
Ah yes, the free loving days of the mid 70's! A few months after this song came out, Afternoon Delight/Starland Vocal Band hit the charts. Stape singers had some good tunes like "Respect Yourself" and my fave "Heavy Makes You Happy".
THE EMOTIONS - " FLOWERS " 70s R&B SOUL Classic The Vocals are Magic ✨ and the Music arrangements pure perfection you guys must hear this beautiful song
Yes, glad you finally got back to the Staple Singers. You heard them 2 years ago singing with The Band. They sang the very moving song, "The Weight ( The Last Waltz)." You were particularly impressed with Mavis Staples lead vocals during that reaction. I'm happy you're getting to hear them on their own. I echo others who have recommended "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There." There's a wonderful live version of "Respect Yourself" at a stadium in 1972 that's especially awesome. Pops Staples is singing with his daughters in that one.
The Staples Singers were primarily a gospel group. You should also check out The Edwin Hawkins Singers, a black gospel choir, and their song, Oh Happy Day. It’s one of a handful of songs with a strong spiritual message that made the billboard charts.
I attended their induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. You guys watched The Band & The Staple Singers in the video for the song The Weight. You loved the soulfulness, great tune. I'll Take You There & Respect Yourself are good Staple Singers songs. They have many.
As a child I loved that they were in my school music book. Gleefully told everyone they were my cousins, even though I only met them twice that I can remember. I just remember them being really nice.
back then Curtis Mayfield (who wrote this song) had so much music he wanted to share he started giving some of his music to the Staple Singers, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Linda Clifford and others.
Miss Mavis is the last surviving member of the Staple Singers. She’s still performing at almost 85 years old. Check out her version of Slippery People with David Byrne. Also check out Wake Up Call with John Mayall. Miss Mavis is in a class by herself.
The Staple Singers are from Memphis, TN, which is near my hometown. Their music was heard a lot in my house growing up. As a matter of fact, whenever they had a night of love-making, they would sometimes sing this song during the day. My sister and I knew what that meant.
Let's Do It Again was the theme song from the 1975 American action crime comedy film of the same name, starring Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby and Jimmie Walker. This was the sequel to UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT. Love the movie. My favorite Staple Singers jam is I'LL TAKE YOU THERE.
Curtis Mayfield at the musical helm. The movie was good too. My first experience with The Staple Singers came from the gospel side of their catalog,. I always loved them.
Thanks for this great reaction. I am not sure, but I think you reacted to The Band performing their classic song “The Weight” (“Take a load off, Fannie”), with The Staples from The Band’s farewell concert documentary THE LAST WALTZ (which is another movie you might want to react to, as it has Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Dr. John, The Staples and more). So you have reacted to The Staple Singers, albeit teamed up with The Band.
A beautiful Blast from the Past - you're making me all misty! RESPECT YOURSELF is an absolute Must, as well as I'LL TAKE YOU THERE (reached #1 and spent 15 weeks on the charts, selling 2 million in less than 10 months)- just such great music and wonderful vocals from The Staples!
This was the theme song to a classic black cinema film from the 70s of the same name, "Let's Do It Again", starring Sir Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, Jimmy "JJ" Walker, John Amos, Ossie Davis, George Foreman, and Calvin Lockhart. Trivia: The rapper, "Biggie Smalls" (aka Notorious B.I.G.) got his name from the character that Calvin Lockhart played in this cult classic film.
This is one of my all time favorite songs, Ever! Mavis, the lead singer, was considered one f the most soulful voices of all time. This song is from the soundtrack to the movie Lets Do It Again, starring Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier. Back then when they did a soundtrack it was by 1 artist or 1 group. They also did the soundtrack to the movie A Piece of the Action, again starring Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier. The song with the same title is also very good. And since we talking about classic black movies with even more classic soundtracks. The original Sparkle movie from 1976. The soundtrack which is in my top 5 soundtracks ever, is done by Aretha Franklin all songs where written by Curtis Mayfield, is worth a watch and listen. And the movie Claudine from 1974 with its soundtrack by Gladys Knight and again all written by Curtis Mayfield is also on my top 5 soundtracks ever. Curtis Mayfield was the r&b/soul music producer of the 70s. He did the soubdtracj to the original movie Superfly as well. Plus his solo albums were hits. All of his music were staples in the African American household growing up and at cookouts, and family gatherings or just cleaning the house on Saturdays. Hes a legend and his music is heavily sampled in hip hop. You really should give him a listen.
Mavis Staples is an absolute institution!! The Staple Singers are one of my favorite soul acts. Respect Yourself, City in the Sky, Heavy Makes you Happy ae classic jams!!
I always open my "UpLifting" DJ Set with "I'll Take You There" by the Staple Singers. Sometimes my Soul set too. Such a great happy & soulful feelin' with this band.
Love the Staple Singers!! The dad (Pops) was known as a major bassist! They started out as a gospel group, and you can tell!! For one of those songs, try "Touch a Hand (Make a Friend)" or a cover of a Bob Dylan work, "A Hard Rain is Gonna Fall". I love how the shelf falls whenever it gets too funky! Hahaha!!
Jay and Amber, Sorry you lost your shelf! 😮 Please note that the Partridge Family is not a real family; it was a TV sitcom that ran on ABC from 1970-74 with starsShirley Jones and her stepson David Cassidy plus professional backing vocalists and session musicians. If you’d like another family group from the same time as Let’s Do It Again, check out the Sylvers and their huge #1 hit from 1976: Boogie Fever. Finally, Let’s Do It Again was the title song from the movie of the same name and it went all the way to the top of the charts in 1976. Another huge #1 hit song from ‘76 was the title song from Car Wash by Rose Royce, with a truly iconic beat worth checking out.
@Jay and Amber, I recently heard an early morning interview with Mavis Staples. She was speaking about her friendship with Prince.💜 But she mentiined that her Dad was very reluctant to do this song because he said he was a 'church man'. She said she had to really talk him into it for the sake of their careers. ❤
Because the song pretty much spells out S-E-X, that's why Pops was so reluctant to do it. Thankfully he relented and another #1 hit emerged from their golden throats.
There is no voice out there like Mavis Staples. And she is STILL out there singing!!!
I saw her perform at the Music Midtown music festival in Atlanta in the mid-1990s. She still had it.
Love me some Gospel Music.
Yep and Prince realized how great she was

YES it was!
Put The Staples Singers "Respect Yourself" on your list. You saw the Staples when you reacted to The Band "The Weight"
They also have their own version of the Weight, without the Band. It's my favorite version of the song.
This is one of the most sampled songs ever. Perfection doesn’t come often. On a side note, this is how your grandparents got down.
Yes...heavily sampled!
