    When Cannondale sent us the invite to the launch of this bike (plus another that you’ll see in the coming weeks), we had to speculate as to exactly what we’d be testing. We had the clue that it was going to be an eBike, so our instant assumption was that it was going to be in the now well-established SL eMTB category. Though many companies are now offering a bike to fit into this category, it seems as if none of them are in agreement as to exactly what a lightweight electric mountain bike should be. In the case of the Cannondale Moterra SL, the answer to that question takes the form of a Shimano EP801 drive unit with a custom 601Wh battery and a smartly designed frame to minimize weight without sacrificing capability. Read on to learn all about Cannondale’s new and exciting entry to the eBike world, and find out how it performed in the initial couple of rides.

    Got one at our shop for a demo. Current Levo alloy owner. After 3 short rides, it’s winning me over. I like most everything about my Levo better than the moterra from the lack of cables to the charging door to the chainguide (moterra doesn’t come with one), to the app. ( specialized app is lighting fast, super easy to navigate, E tube is clunky, slow, complicated)…. But the ride of the Moterra SL is undeniable. It’s not just lighter, it’s poppier, more playful, but still stable and confident. the motor is amazing, trail mode 3 is so intuitive I didn’t feel the need for turbo. Oh, and a medium fits me perfectly. I’m impressed and I didn’t want to be. I’m on my 3rd e-bike now, this may be my 4th

      What happened to Cannondale anyway? I remember in the 90s they were among the best and most sought after brands. I took a 20 year hiatus from MTB and they've obviously fallen quite far, but nice to see they're still in the game and I'm rooting for them!
      But yeah, how'd they fall off so far?

    • @pennhiker5117

      The MX400 motorcycle arguably brought them down. From the web: “ Cannondale reported a loss of $46,600,000 on the motorcycle and ATV division, after reporting 11 straight quarterly losses. In the year before filing for Chapter 11, Cannondale’s share price on the Nasdaq had fallen 83 percent. In the end, the motorcycle losses brought down the whole company. Although Cannondale bicycles survived, it was taken over by completely different owners. Cannondale’s motorcycle foray cost the company paper wealth that totaled at least $80,000,000.”

      The price difference between the LAb71 and SL 1 models, comes mostly from the custom paint job on the Lab71 and a few carbon bits here and there. I have had 3 rides on this. 60 or so miles with 4.5 thousand feet of elevation. This bike feels like a Stump Jumper Evo with a motor. Didn't really notice how slack it was. The biggest thing I noticed is that when the motor shuts off at 20 mph that you can still peddle this bike and gain speed in the flat and down hill sections without feeling like a pig in the mud. Compared to my Turbo Levo, I would say the the Levo will have more power in climbs but can't hang with this bike in the flats or downhill. I would shorten the cranks on this from 165 to 160 as I had a few strikes in areas that I normally wouldn't. I also noticed that because of the weight of this bike on the trail, it's not as heavy as a levo or a 50 plus pound bike is you'll take a little more of a beating because it's not as "damp" as a heavier bike would be. My personal opinion is if you're looking to race this ebike xc races climbing power and output is where this bike may not shine. But downhill and flats is where you could possibly make up ground. This bike is extremely fast and peddles well. Can handle drops and jumps, I wouldn't worry about the flex stays.

    First Start. Motor sucks, would great to see a beefy damper (Vivid or X2) as well, and I am not sure if this carbon horst link will last over a longer time period. But in general a very nice bike. But as all bikes: Way to expensive!!!! Dear manufacturers: When a bike is the same price as a normal petrol powerd motorbike, then something is not righ. Just saying.

      Chainstay length is understandable but didn't feel crazy. Head tube angle can be adjusted to 63.7 by rotating the headset cups.

      SL compared to full power ebikes that are 14lbs heavier than it!

  • @jordanmackay3568
    @jordanmackay3568 6 месяцев назад

    Why is weight such a big deal these days. Its not difficult.. Battery and motor weighs 5.5kg so just add that to your current bike, and no one runs exo tires. Brakes will be shit and 36s flex a ridic amount on an ebike. Lightweight just means breakable. My KSL is 21kg and it can handle 10 runs of fort bill without skipping a beat because its bomb proof.
    I had a Moustache bike with a flex in the chainstay and it was very worrying. Felt like it would snap every time I ripped a berm

    • @marksedman2267
      @marksedman2267 6 месяцев назад

      I agree, its really 48-50 lbs with a real build. My KSL is 41 lbs built and plenty of power to tackle almost any climb.
      I want SL bikes to get down to 37lbs with real builds. I am not sure that's possible with current tech.

      @@marksedman2267 Yeah tech isn't there yet but I feel the day is coming that we get a true sub 40lb bike with 85 plus nm and a battery around 650wh. I'm sure battery tech could improve and weight could be dropped a little there and maybe some new motor designs shave off a pound or so. I'm not sure where the rest would come from though.
