One of the few critics that actually liked the movie, this was always a childhood favorite of mine.
Critics were really divided on this film. It has a 56% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 61/100 on Metacritic.
Peter Travers didn't like it. He gave it 1/4 Stars.
Richard Roeper liked it, too.
@@brianrose8772 I hope I can see the Ebert and Roeper review of this one day
@@stefanmovieflixtomasi Yeah, me too
This is one of those few movies that I actually agreed with Roger Ebert about. His opinion and mine were often opposites.
Were they polar opposites?
I agree with Roger Ebert.
Me too.
I couldn't agree more. I've actually made it a tradition to watch this movie at least once every December. It may not be the greatest movie out there, but considering this was an adaptation of a simple but endearing children's book made in the early 2000's, it could have beena whole lot worse. (Looking at you cat in the hat) In a way everytime i pop in the dvd to watch this movie, i feel like im also on the train. Looking to reaffirm my belief. Its one if the most sacred childhood memories i got.
Oh this must be when The Cancer took hold of his Jaw, I would just like to say Thank You Roger for helping me become a Reviewer and passing the Torch to My generation on Rated K For Kids By Kids. I'll take that ⭐⭐⭐⭐ as a 👍🏽You will be missed Ciao For Now Roger Ebert.
This came out the week before the Incredibles and that's simply slightly neat.
No it didn’t, The Incredibles came out November 5, 2004. The Polar Express came out November 10, 2004. But it did actually come out the week before The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie, which was November 19, 2004. Close though.
@@brianrose8772 Welp, I was a little off, but that's okay!
Also:
Polar Express < Incredibles < Sponge
Simply slightly neat? Lol wut
@@mattjazzfan2288 Put simply, it's neat! But only slightly...
Genskiel And it’s funny you say that, because that’s exactly how Audiences rank it: The Polar Express has 63% With audience. Which I think that it deserves way more than that. And The Incredibles has 75% With audience. And again, another that deserves more percentage I think. And SpongeBob Squarepants Movie has 77% With Audience.
It really is a great film. I can see why people hated this film but it catches the spirit of the book. I think it would’ve failed had it been a live action movie.
Love this film. It isn’t a perfect movie but it’s THE perfect Christmas movie. Watch it every year. It has an atmosphere and enchantment that feels very Christmas esque.
My only minor nitpick with the movie is the lack of names for the characters. Overall, the movie's absolutely phenomenal.
I remember reading the book as a kid and loving its artwork and simple storyline. I didn't watch the movie for the longest time because of its mixed reviews. But after finally seeing it, I can't really complain. It's a decent "Christmas magic" kinda movie. It doesn't complicate itself with unnecessary plot, but its sentiment is maintained throughout.
Thank God a real critic
Lol just because you agree with him?
@@123rockfanNo. Because he can articulate his points in a way that doesn't sound like a child that throws a temper tantrum over every atom of a film like critics today.
@@bilbobaggins9451Ebert has a book called “Your Movie Sucks” and he’s notorious for hating certain movies. Furthermore, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with todays critics actually critiquing movies. Describing it as having a “tantrum” is a ridiculous take.
@@123rockfan You don't think there's ANYTHING wrong with today's critics? Okay.
@@bilbobaggins9451 when did I say that? Obviously there are critics that I don’t like. There are critics who gush over everything just so they can get a blurb on a movie poster. And then there are RUclips movie critics who hate everything and thrive on negativity
The animation doesn't hold up perfectly, but 20 years later it's still one of the best Christmas movies we've got. I'd give it a 3.5/4, but yes it was a 4/4 at the time.
I remember that this came out when I was in kindergarten. The next year, in 1st grade, our teacher let us have a Christmas party and we came to school in our pajamas (like the kids in the movie) and we had hot chocolate, which I didn't like at the time.
My 1st grade teacher did that every year, and that would be announced in morning announcements.
Bonus memory: If you listen closely in the beginning, The Boy has a sister named Sarah. That was my sister's name, and since we never learn The Boy's name, she always assumed that it was Zachary- my name. I thought it was annoying then, but it's cute now.
I saw the Polar Express when I was a child, and it always has a special place in my heart.
The Polar Express was what got me back into trains. The movie NEVER gets old. It's Warner Bros.' Magnum Opus of Christmas movies.
As the old saying goes: "Who doesn't love trains?"
I think he reviewed the Polar Express fairly here
His voice sounds like he’s in pain.
This was after his first surgery for his thyroid cancer, so his voice did sound different because of it
This movie is trash
No it's not
Yes, it's sentimental garbage.
@@titusmccarthy funny, the sentimental aspect is the only thing I enjoyed about Polar Express, especially the ending. The pointless amusement park/action scenes is what I dislike. Most of the movie feels like one of those virtual roller coaster rides at the mall
What's it like to be dead inside? @@titusmccarthy
