The room for the interview, is like an interrogation room. Cold and classroom like. Modern Dickensian. But never the less, Guthrie is all class as usual. If I could die, knowing that I was an inspiration to thousands and thousand of musicians, I might die a happy man. However, that will be Guthrie perhaps, not me. Thanks for posting. And thanks Guthrie!
"The record company's response was: Well, they've just stolen 5,000 copies of an instrumental album. If they can sell 5,000 copies, they've got a job." Brilliant!
I really do adore people who can't be bothered to get pissed about things. I'm not one of these people. It doesn't matter if I don't see the point in getting angry. I get mad all the same. :)
I saw him with the aristocrats at Cosmo Music. During the lesson there was a guy in the back asking him questions about "slippery wonderful thing" and such. I wonder if this is the same guy.
Frank was a born contrarian. A pugilistic, polemicist and we need people like that. But you seldom got a straight answer from Frank. He would sometimes be obnoxiously sarcastic. (Not that some of the interviewers didn't deserve it.) Zappa, could rip people to shreds. Guthrie is a gentleman. He picks his words carefully like when he found it difficult to find people of comparable age, and "passion". He could have easily said, "skill", Doesn't matter. We know what he means.
Lessons are things we learn from all of our resources, some good and some bad, Guthrie may think he hasn't taken any lessons, but I would differ from him on that point of view.
I think he means no formal lessons, nobody works out chords for themselves so I presume he had a book or something. His best piece of advice is to try to learn things by ear, you will never find your own style if you need tabs to work anything out.
He's talking more about non-music stuff. You can almost see Guthrie's intelligence through his speech. I do think he was off base with the Erotic Cakes album being the most illegally downloaded guitar album thing... Some of the Steve Vai stuff probably has that under its belt lol
Thanks. It is far too easy to take cheap shots, and no continent's musicians are short on their quota of abuse and stereotypes being forced upon them. We don't need musician interviews to be an opportunity to slam other musicians while sucking up to the one being interviewed. Guthrie was probably uncomfortable; he's a decent guy that doesn't need to boost his own ego at the expense of others.
This guy is interesting to listen to but not as much as Frank. He is definately a much more technical guitarist!! Good interview for sure. Thanks for the upload.
The interviewer is way off-base to suggest that there are no educated musicians in North America -- he must not get out much. Apparently he's never heard of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Eric Johnson -- and those are just rock guitar players
1:13 says his dad showed him some chords then at 1:30 says he's never had a guitar lesson...sorry bra, that's a lesson...I just caught the legendary GG in a lie...
Dude... Guthrie is great, but that is probably the worst interview I've ever watched. The guy asking the questions has no excitement in his voice whatsoever, and the questions are lame...
+Andre Guimaraes i'd say it is one of the best. at least he did some research on the guy instead of asking how to play faster and what scales to use. i bet you seek out these types of questions.
The interviewer had nobody he could talk to! Poor guy! =( So, why didn't he just grab a piece of paper and draw some F$%&ING friends for him??!!! He rated sooo many musicians at 4:13 like boring or uneducated! He should think better before speaking. Maybe, that's why only a few talk to him. Humbleness is a virtue, Mr. Interviewer!
Much more than a handful. The interviewer's cheap shot at American musicians was silly and undeserved; musicians here aren't dumb and uneducated. The guy is an ass, and it isn't because he lacks faith; all you need to do is talk to people to see how false his idiotic insult is.
Guthrie never fails to keep me glued to his every word! What a tremendous fellow!!!!
guthrie is always interesting. the interviewer sounds like he's still in black and white

Still can't believe he's self taught. He is a Genius.
This is one of the nicer interviews. Thanks for posting
"Guthrie Govan - Erotic"
Sounds like just about everything he plays.
"~~put yourself up and carry on...it happened, it's done." and then he jokes about it...Lars! Are you listening! True confidence.
Such a humble guy :)
"The record company's response was: Well, they've just stolen 5,000 copies of an instrumental album. If they can sell 5,000 copies, they've got a job." Brilliant!
Few well educated musicians in North America? I beg to differ. Great Guthrie interview, as is the usual.
"hopefully they were very dissapointed" hahahaha XD
'I don't know what they thought they were stealing, but I hope they were disappointed'
hahahah
"I'm a complete imposter". The most clever guy ever.
Ah, shame to hear about the stolen copies. Just bought a signed CD to support, should have done that ages ago, it's an immensely fun record.
I really do adore people who can't be bothered to get pissed about things. I'm not one of these people. It doesn't matter if I don't see the point in getting angry. I get mad all the same. :)
man your amazing, your skills are great,,,
Mr Govan: "where were you yesterday between 10 and midnight?" This interview sounds like examination!
I saw him with the aristocrats at Cosmo Music. During the lesson there was a guy in the back asking him questions about "slippery wonderful thing" and such. I wonder if this is the same guy.
Legend!
I can just imagine Kirk Hammet and Carlos Santana in that van haha
This feels like a crime interview
Guthrie Govan - Erotic :)))))) "Hopefully they were very disappointed". :)))) Guthrie, you kill me! :)
"Guthrie Govan-Erotic"
If I saw that on the side of a box, fuck yeaah I'd steal it.
"since Frank Zappa died..." intelligent musicians are no more [paraphrasing]: oh my do I AGREE!!!!

I'm looking for a copy!

Never a lesson? I just fainted.

Where's part 2?

The word genius is seriously overused, but in Mr. Govan's case, I think you might be right.
Did he say Oxford University? Isn't that like one of the top schools in the world? lol. Brilliant
Was the interviewer constipated during this interview ?...
Haha he dyed his hair.

I cant spell or play the guitar as well as Guthrie!
I want to meet Guthrie, I think I love him. Not gay. haha
1:13 says his dad showed him some chords then at 1:30 says he's never had a guitar lesson...sorry bra, that's a lesson...I just caught the legendary GG in a lie...
Guthrie is so British in his humour..... ha ha ha... advantage to know how to spell. :)
At least new shirt.
