All great games! But I want In the Footsteps of Darwin to win. The educational value wins it for me.
I was a bit sad that Trekking through History wasn't nominated, that would have been my top choice!

It’s one we haven’t played yet! Great to hear your praise though hopefully we can play Trekking soon. I love seeing all the educational games recently, just shows another facet of this hobby!

I would like In the Footsteps of Darwin to win, but I think Sky Team is going to win. I'm a little shocked that Sea Salt & Paper wasn't nominated or recommended. I guess they didn't think they could fit a Spiele logo on the cover :P

SkyTeam is amazing but I'd be surprised if a co-op game wins twice in a row. As a lover of co-op games I am very excited for this year

    Thanks for the video!
From previous years, it seems that games nominated for the Spiel des Jahres are games that entered the German market over the past year. Take Fantasy Realms: first released in 2017, first German edition released in 2020, nominated for the Kennerspiel in 2021.
And speaking of Spiel vs. Kennerspiel, there have been some puzzlement by many in recent years regarding some lighter games nominated for the Kennerspiel and heavier games nominated for the Spiel. Including Fantasy Realms, The Crew, Challengers, and now Sky Team. Moreover, some games in the recommended lists would be better in the nominated list.
For me, I was personally thinking Trekking Through History and Phantom Ink as the ones on the recommended list that should have been nominated. Trekking, like Darwin, is historically educational with a fun simple theme of revisiting historical events in three days. Phantom Ink is a fun and spooky party game akin to Codenames, except each of two teams privately ask questions to their spirit, who then revealing their answers one letter at a time until "silencio" is called-all to be the first team to identify the secret object.
I'm rooting for the one game out of the Spiel / Kennerspiel nom lists that I was not aware of until now, and that is Flip Captain. Ultimately, like The Crew, I think Sky Team will win the Spiel.

I'm surprised Skyteam was nominated for the reasons you mentioned, and I haven't played Captain Flip, so I'd pick In The Footsteps of Darwin. I did enjoy that game quite a bit and look forward to In The Footsteps of Marie Curie. If I consider the recommended games, I'm surprised Harmonies wasn't nominated, and I think Trekking Through History is the best of the bunch for my gaming tastes. Great video 👍

id haft to disagree with the recently vibe on Harmonies ive seen cascadia for a long time now and have never had the desire to own or play it while Harmonies had me chomping at the bit to get it even paid a extra 30.00 to get it sooner from Zatu

@@kovray its great played it about 3-4 times in a row other night thou the instructions could of been a bit more clearer about putting items on "previously placed ones" the way it read it felt like had to be placed the previous turn not just previously placed

Im shocked Wandering Towers wasnt nominated last year or this year.
I think Captain Flip will win, but I dont think its a very strong SDJ nomination. Its quick and easyz bit not much substance to keep it around years down the road.

That game is pretty spectacular, I feel the same it’s quite innovative and feels different.
I also think I agree, hard to see any of these withstand the test of time honestly. I do enjoy all thoroughly though

A two-player, limited communication game is not a game I would want to play with a family and specifically children.
Skyteam got dumped into the wrong category, and shouldn't win if adhering to the family category in which it was placed.
Should Skyteam have been swapped with Guild of Merchant Explorers, and then won the Kenner? Probably.

    • @kovray
      @kovray  2 месяца назад

It was interesting from that perspective for sure, but hey maybe redefining family games experiences?
Appreciate your thoughts and comments! Always love to see everyone’s perspectives and insights.

not to sound like a jackhole but the fact that Catan was part of any ones best ever list proves this award means ziltch that game is beyond boring unfun and not needed in any collection.......

Honestly have to disagree. Catan was very significant to the boardgame hobby as a whole. And also, a lot changed since they added the Kennerspiel category.

@@Jueglar can't agree with that. As a German Kid born in the 90s it is one of the games I transitioned to after all the kids games. And therefore it still holds a deep meaning to me. Yes, sure, there are definitely better alternatives nowadays... but back than I was glad to have it

    • @kovray

I also disagree here too. Although I may not play it much today the countless nights I’ve played Catan have propelled me in this hobby and have opened my eyes to so many games. It’s a game that I know many families still play and enjoy fondly, which is really special.

I don't like Catan, I don't understand why other people like Catan in this day and age because there are so many better options, I will only play Catan if someone else really loves it and there are no other options and I don't want to be 'that guy' and rain on their parade - but this is also 2024. I can recognize that a game which is outdated today was cutting edge in the past.
It won the Spiel in 1995. What was the landscape of gaming in 1995? Certainly nothing like what we have today. I don't have to find it a fun game, or even in the context of 2024 a good game (because honestly I don't), but I can still understand that the jury in 1995 saw it as groundbreaking and deserving of their award.
