This song is written by English songwriter Frederic Weatherly (1910) and became popular after "A Londonerry Air" in 1913.
For nearly eighty years I've heard the best of the best sing this song. BUT NEVER AS BEAUTIFULLY AS OUR JACKIE.
My brother Danny died today. I think I'll play this version at his funeral.
My father passed away on Tuesday Oct 15th 2013 at home in hospice care and my mom picked this song to be sung as we exited the church..it was so sad..i miss you dad and i will do my best to carry on..mom will be allright

How must it be for a tiny girl, starting at the age of 9, to have the entire world stop to listen to you and you alone, standing, clapping, screaming, buying out your concerts all over the world months in advance, deferring to your versions of old classic songs as the best ever heard? How must it be? It does not seem to frighten her. I'm not sure how even that part works.

Once during an interview Jackie was asked what was the best thing about being able to sing. After a very brief pause she answered. "the best thing about being able to sing is to show the world that miracles do happen".
I believe Jackie's masterful rendition of Danny Boy, recorded when she was 10, is a perfect example of what she meant.
Anyone who listens to this and does not hear a miracle, is to be pitied.
I met my wife 54 years ago singing Danny Boy in a night club in calf. Asked her to marry me on our 1st date,! just lost her a short while ago.She became a Gospel Singer , She wrote over 100 songs,most are copywrighted.JACKIE ,GOD BLESS YOU,Don't ever stop SINGING,!!!!

At first I thought this song was about some white flowers growing all over the mountainside in the summer, until I listened carefully to the lyrics. A very sad sad song indeed. I can't believe I have tearing eyes after listening to Jackie Evancho's rendition of Danny Boy with such lyrics. Whatever, let there be peace on earth and in our hearts.

For those of you that haven't seen Jackie Evancho in person let me tell you that she sings as naturally live as anything you hear that is recorded.
She doesn't always sound exactly the same and she does have better days at times but essentially she just belts these songs out in a real and genuine way on stage and live.
I have never been as blown away by an artist as her in a live show and Ive seen a few of the greats. Even the very best seem to lose their edge with live performances.
I was bursting into tears when I heard this song. God has really blessed her with a beautiful voice. It makes me think about my grandpa smith........

Been Irish and now living in the US, I have heard this song thousands of time. It's a song that is meant to be sung in the classical style and NOBODY can do a better job with it than this young Lady. That is why I will follow her career forever because she's only just begun. And the videography is absolutely breathtaking. I do not know why she chose to record this particular song but she nailed it, that is all I can say!
Recorded when Jackie Evancho was only 10 years old in 2010 for her 'Dream With Me' album. She recorded 19 songs for the album and this is the only song that didn't make the cut for the album. I've read that she did this recording in only 1 take and never sang it again. She's 22 years old now and I hope someday before I pass I get to hear her sing it live.

@@rd1903 No, not recorded in one take. And in fact David Forster had to, shall we say "strongly encourage" Jackie to get it recorded, making her mom none too happy. But even then only after changing the wording of a couple of lines. And to this day Jackie has not sung "Danny Boy" again, which is a shame because her's is the best version I have ever heard. NO ONE does it better.
@@jayjackson8480 One of many songs she never put on an album that hopefully she chooses to sing in concert someday. Songs like 'Only Time', 'She Knew' & 'Mercy'. Also songs from years past that she would absolutely crush like 'Scarborough Fair' (Simon & Garfunkel) & 'Nights In White Satin' (Moody Blues).
Judging by her 'Behind My Eyes' song though, seems like she is headed more in the 'Techno Pop' direction, which makes sense. More upbeat and the type younger people can gravitate to.

At 1:52, my shoulders tightened up involuntarily - I was braced for a note that was sharp, flat or harsh in some way because it happens so often with this song. How marvelous it was to hear that perfect, pure and effortless sound!
At 3:30 I was totally relaxed, already secure in the ability of this astounding young girl. Her voice coach must be immensely proud of how she's learned to sing - she has not wasted a moment of their time. Magnificent singer.

Danny Boy is a favorite of mine. I listen to every version of it I can find.
Frank Patterson tops my list of renditions by a male, and Celtic Woman had been at the top of my list for females. But I bumped both of them from the top spot in favor of a singer who has sung Danny Boy only ONCE. That's correct ONLY ONCE, she has never performed it, but only sung it at the INSISTANCE of David Foster to be one of the19 songs to be considered for an upcoming album. 14 of the 19 songs made it onto the album. 18 of the 19 made it onto the Deluxe Edition of the album. Danny Boy was the only song out of the 19 that did not make it onto either the album, or the Deluxe Edition. And it has not appeared on ANY of her many EP's or albums since the day it was recorded.
That vocal artist, was the then 10 year old heard singing it in this video, Jackie Evancho.
It was recorded in March 2010, the record producer was David Foster.
But IMHO in the years to come Jackie's rendition of Danny Boy will be judged by future music scholars as A Masterpiece of the Ages.
Absolutely, I have listened to over 100 renditions of this song- many are very good but "NONE" are in the same class as this! A class of one- Jacqueline Marie Evancho. That she was only 10 yo just makes it more unbelievable!

Durbin or Durham do not come close to Ms. Evancho. The beauty of You Tube provides us with easy access to compare all three. Jackie adds warmth and a powerful high notes that satisfies the feeling this song demands. Only 10 and beyond description. In time the measure of her talent will stand the test. Not Pop or Rock and Roll. Classical-Crossover is all hers.

@@Ihdc1 I am no JE fan, but I listened to HS and of the two, Ms. Evancho is better. Ms. Steel is uneven, weak, and really (to me) quite unremarkable. Ms. Evancho has the basis of a voice, though her singing suffers from sameness (as in every song she sings sounds like the one before and after), and her diction is very odd, contrived and annoying at times, but overall, vocally, she has (at least at this stage) a better instrument than Steel and has focused on a style which seems to suit many people.
You cavalierly dismiss two singers with real voices, especially Durbin, who not only had a voice, but knew how to sing.

+flip inheck Try educate yourself. It's 100% Irish, based on the ancient Irish ballad Aislean an Oigfear, which F.W. used to write words to. It has NOTHING to do with england. Grow up!
Donnchadh Ó Hámsaigh wrote Aislean an Oigfear, where the tune to Danny Boy comes from. F.W., like so many others, added lyrics to the tune. And as FW said himself 'it's a very very Irish tune'.

Ross is only credited with collecting ancient Irish tunes, especially this one, 'Aislean an Oigfear' (Irish for 'Young man's dream'), and sending them the great Irish musician, George Petrie, in Dublin, to be preserved. Once again, many people wrote lyrics to this tune, even as far as Westlife's 'You Raise me up', written by Irish man, Brendan Graham. But, I see I am talking to someone who can only insult people and use vulgar language in order to keep his argument going, without any mature argument. So, I take it I am dealing with a child, or a very immature person. Oh my...Jackie has such a beautiful, soothing voice. Those high notes are amazing, not only for their precision and tone, but the ease with which she transitions into them. Remarkable performance, gives me chills every time.
I think an overlooked talent in this video has got to be that trumpet/cornet player, although i guess everyone would be overshadowed performing with evancho.
sicus5D I wouldn't say the person is over looked. You don't over look someone like a Chis Botti. The problem with this piece is that it was not preserved on any cd/dvd or other such medium. You could only download this recording from Jackie's fan club site when you purchased her "Dream With Me" cd or dvd. Unfortunately I don't think it is available anymore.

I love to listen to anything that Jackie sings, especially the songs of praise and Christmas. Just the sound of her voice chokes me up and brings tears. But Danny Boy is already a sad song, and hearing Jackie with her Angel voice singing it, it fills my heart with a profound, overwhelming sadness. Not merely a lump in my throat and a tug at my heart, I mean a deep painful feeling inside. Because of this, I don't return to view this video that often. The plain truth is that Jackie's performance of Danny Boy makes me hurt deeply. I don't know if others feel this also, but I don't think I'm the only one. Jackie Evancho, the Little Angel.
