  • On this video I showed you how to build a LiFePo4 battery ( • Building a 280Ah Battery ), on this video I showed you how it tested out for capacity ( • Did my DIY 280Ah Batte... ). On this one I'm showing you how to go about charging that big beast using the power supply you already own for your ham radio shack.

If you have a lab bench power supply with current limit, it works well too... Set the voltage up to the full charge voltage, with current limit set to the max charge current you want to run, and let the bench supply work it out 😅 thanks for all your videos!

One of these days I'll find a good deal on a lab bench power supply with sufficient voltage and current to do that with. Right now the one I have limits out to 5v and 3A.

Happy New Year Carlos. I like that Video a lot. You know why? I am same crazy as you doing Things everyone telling us not to do them. The funny Thing about charging up Batteries is the Manufacturers of the Batteries not suggesting to use a regular Switching Supply with variable VDC and the Manufacturers of these PSU Units telling us not to use the Supplies for charging up Batteries. Are they just trying to fooling us or what?

I don't see why what we are doing would be wrong. It is really no different than using some fancy charger. Especially with the use of a BMS to control the charging of the cells.

K, your BMS on the battery will manage things. Unless it's a total turd battery. If you put the PS at 14.6-ish the BMS "should" manage things. I'm not a Bioenno snob and do run Chicom batts like this (auto batt charger on AGM) to positive results. Your mileage may vary, good luck & experiment! Happy to see you exploring beyond the "jumping out of things that should be on the ground" (I'm prior aircrew = funny comment) KØATV

The BMS will handle it *only* if the Power Supply will also handle it. Remember that this is a 40Amp PS with a 300Ah BMS. Like I said in the video, the BMS will limit the inrush of current all the way to 300Amps, but the PS will shut itself down at its rated max current. Thus the need to slowly feed current into the battery for the first initial few amps.

Bettery will not charge to full until the input voltage is above the fully charged battery’s voltage… no matter how long you charge at a lower voltage.

It will, if you have a BMS. Without a BMS you are correct.

@@LifeAtTerminalVelocity Boosting has to happen somewhere. If BMS doesn’t boost…then the best that can happen is the voltages match.

do you have a link to buy the same power supply that you have?

This is an Amazon Affiliate link:

      MFJ-4245MV
I checked the MFJ website and while the product catalog still shows it the page for the specific power supply is gone. I suspect that this is one of the products that will no longer be made by them after they announced the ceasing of manufacturing in the USA. So get it while you can, I have two of them and they have proven to be excellent. I suspect that you can also find new stock of them at the usual amateur radio suppliers.

Happy New Year! I have Ryobi battery tools and am constantly bypassing the BMS to charge them when they won’t turn back on or charge. Many of the times the internal pack voltage drops below the BMS specs so I open up the batteries and charge them directly. Once they are up to at least 18VDC I can put them on the charger which brings them up to around 20VDC. I have not heard of turning up the voltage for this before. I doubt it will work for my case since the FETS turn off the output when bellow a specified internal pack voltage. I am not saying you are wrong for your setup just thought I would share my story.

I have seen that done before. Never done it myself but I have seen it done. I saw a guy that ran external leads to the cells on the batteries so that he wouldn't have to pop them open anymore. He ran tiny bolts through the shell of the battery and leads with leads to each cell and then he could just clip on to each cell individually from the outside.

@@LifeAtTerminalVelocity yes I have seen that also. I would rather open it up because bypassing the BMS is only one of the fixes. I have had to replace a 18650 cell before because one was dead. To find that bad cell I was checking voltage on individual cells. Another thing I do is put a label on the bottom when it was serviced so I can know if this pack has a chronic problem. All the best! Keep enjoying life at terminal velocity. 73 de KI5HXM
