Finally! Every trainer I've watched demonstrates with dogs who naturally grab objects. My dog doesn't, in fact she doesn't play with objects in her mouth at all, so this was very encouraging. thank you!
Omgggg this is genius!!! I’ve been struggling so much with teaching my dog to hold. She doesn’t like anything in her mouth and a lot of the other trainers use force (physically open the mouth, pinch ears etc) all kinds of things I won’t do. I’ve been using shaping, but I haven’t been able to get her to actually open her mouth - she will touch it, push it/roll it, etc. i think this will work so well for her! Thank you!!!!
Sometimes just shaping it helps too. Like treats for looking at it, then treats for touching it in any way, lots of excitement when they do. End on a positive note and Keep them wanting more. Gets put away until next training session with you. Sometimes starting with something they're more apt to put in their mouth helps too. Like a toy you can put treats inside of. Have also smeared cream cheese, wet dog food, or liverwurst (not a fan of peanut butter) on a dumbbell to help. Doing a FETCH class now so this video will definitely help my students. Hope that helps.
I just got a little basket for my dog to hold in pictures after our wedding & this video was super helpful and super cute with those dogs! Definitely subscribed for more
This is a great video! My dog doesn't really mouth things and thought it was a target at first, but finally mouthed it. She doesn't grab it, but puts her mouth over it and immediately backs off for the treat. Do you have a recommendation on getting the dog to keep it in their mouth for longer?
Honestly, I love love LOVE your videos. I'm getting a border collie in the fall and all of these videos help me feel well prepared to integrate my dog into our lives. :)
I am so happy to hear this!! I am going to do another border collie 101 video soon and I’ll be asking for your questions in the community tab! So stay tuned.... 🙂 Thanks for watching and commenting.
Loved the intro of your talented pups. This was so informative! Once we get a dog again, I will definitely try these. I also believe in positive reinforcement! I also liked how you taught how to fetch, great next step!
LMAO!!! With Aeon it’s as simple as handing it to him and saying. “Here.” Where you have done it again is you gave me a direction to take that. Thanks again, you’re a genius.
@@michaellawrence6677 every border collie I've had has been quirky in some way, except my Sprite who was the Mary Poppins of border collies, practically perfect in every way. :)
Great video!! I've been struggling to teach my dog this for so long and after following just the first 2.5 minutes of the video, we're making progress!
Love this video, thanks so much! My labrador loves fetch but I've been trying to teach her to carry items. So far she'll only fetch items and while that's fun, it's not necessarily helpful 😂 I had gotten her to take fairly consistently but she'd immediately drop the toy for a treat, I couldn't get the timing right and get her to hold anything in her mouth for any duration. It makes a lot of sense to do them as two commands as you're asking for two different behaviors - taking the toy into their mouth, and then keeping it in their mouth. Like a down-stay, positional then duration cue. Thank you!!
This is an older video, so I understand if you do not see/look at any new comments, but I just wanted to say that you've been a really great resource training my border collie mix pup. I got her a couple months ago, she is 4 months now and incredibly smart. I don't own a farm or easily accessible dog park (my apartment complex doesn't have one near), so I am trying to find things to keep her stimulated and fulfilled. I really want to teach her to paint eventually after watching your videos on painting and also frisbee/fetch in the meantime. I have already started working with her on puzzle toys and she's pretty happy with those. This video opens up so many more fun things I can help her learn so when I am busy or not home she will be able to be happy!
Your video, was so good! Thank you for teaching this technique. It is a really good one. Your filming technique has come a long way. You’ve really been growing!
Awwww. Thank you so much Heidi! This technique is I think one of the best and easiest. Of course you have to repeat it many times but I have used it on all of my dogs. Finally got my edit computer up and running again and I’m ready to roll again.....!!
@@YetisPlace it's working great now. Luckily I had a fairly recent backup so no problems so far. Crossing all fingers and toes. And now I have new batteries and a new tripod.
Thank you! I’m excited to try this with my rescue dog. She doesn’t play with toys and a lot of fetch training videos assume they will put the toy in their mouth without you teaching them that part.

Lovely video! I’ve been working on this with my 8 month poodle puppy. He has a natural retrieve and loves to put things in his mouth but I’m struggling to keep him from chewing on the object while it’s in his mouth. He does okay in a retrieve situation where he’s focused on bringing the dumbbell back to me but if I have him take it while he’s stationary he either wants to chew on it with his back teeth, spit it out right away, or walk away with it. Should I just go back to practicing the split second holds or do you have any other advice? Thanks again for explaining things so well!
thanks for this! we got a border collie a couple months back and he can do sit down drop it and leave it so far but we're working on a couple others. i think this one will be neat to try. update 1hr later: he's done it a couple of times however he got frustrated so we had to stop, we will try again later
Thank you! My German Shepherd has accepted to hold a wooden spoon in his mouth, for a split second! But that is from avoiding to even touch his mouth to it! Your method worked! Now, I have to get him to hold on to it! 😅
Trying to teach my Service Dog to be able to grab me a bottle of water (heat and dehydration induced seizures here), so I'll be using this video to help! Thank you!

i taught 2 of my moms dogs to shake paw and i thought they were really smart because they learned it in like 5 minutes. problem is that now they think the answer to any question is just to throw paws at it. if the answer to the problem isn't flailing paws, they don't care and just resign themselves to the fact that they aren't getting treats.
I recently discovered your channel and after watching this video I gave it a try. My husky mix isn't the biggest fan of having something in his mouth except for food and chewing snacks, but it didn't take very long until he took the wooden stick I trained with in his mouth. I am now trying to stretch the time before the release, but the problem is, he starts chewing on the stick basically immediately. How can i discourage him from doing so?
Without the stick you can do an exercise of gently placing your hand under your dogs chin for just a second or 2 to begin with, then immediately treat. Repeat this many times until your dog is comfortable with it and you can extend the length of time just a very small amount each time, always followed immediately with a food reward. You are rewarding stillness while your hand is under his chin. Then, after your dog is fully comfortable with this, add the stick back in, with your hand under his chin (with the hand under the chin, you are again trying to achieve stillness), starting again only for a second or 2. Then exchange the stick for the treat right away. Always take lots of time with these small steps so that your dog doesn't feel pressured. It's meant to be fun and rewarding for your dog. :) You can also exchange the wooden stick with something else in a similar shape that he is less prone to chew.
I'm trying to teach this to my young dog who's extremely enthusiastic, we can't get duration down because he immediately starts barking and throwing his paws up, any tips for teaching an enthusiastic dog duration 😅
Can I teach my 7 year old dog this? I see dogs at the park with a ball in their mouth the whole time. This keeps them from barking. My dog is German shepherd and barks a lot. 😮
None of these steps should ever be rushed or forced! If the dog is reluctant, please don’t push them. This is for fun - for both you and the dog. Each dog has their own motivation and works at their own pace! Always respect what your dog is telling/showing you!
