- This was probably one of the lowest-cost, but highest value-added projects we've done for the house yet! Some verison of this should definitely be standard on every house, and people might inspect their attics more often to catch problems earlier. If you are planning a build.. definitely include this!!

How about some 2” side rails to keep the creeper on the runway.
That wouldn't be nearly as fun though 😁
Use wire mesh to close all the holes where mice can pass through focus on the kitchen.
Prevent mice from entering the house.
Easy to get ride of them even if they enter the house as they have no place to hide.
Mice can shew wood.
Do it now before too late.
I would also consider boxing out the access hole so you can have a insulated access door. That tends to be missed a lot
We have a flush mount hatch that I'll be adding a gasket to as well as some XPS on the back side, and I reserved two R38 batts to roll over the opening before closing the door!
Laying desired dimensional height 2x’s on edge perpendicular to / on top of the joists at proper spacing works well for this too and provides a more solid base for plywood though such a method may interfere with possible mechanical / duct work and doesn’t allow the ability of reusing scrap lumber, but could save time.
Thought about that, the problem was some of the ceiling joists are 2x8 and some are 2x6 and I would've had to buy several 2x6s and 2x8s to get to the right height. Less thermal bridging with the 2x4s also
The joist height discrepancies makes sense. Looking forward to more content !
Nonno always had a stack of scrap wood for his projects. He would be so proud of you both.
Bye bye level
Alex, you are such a child 😂
Every woodworker has their stash! We know how to put a level through its paces over here 😆
Why did you insulate that gable wall to the roof?
Had a few extra R23 batts and scraps, figured why not. They're the north and south facing walls so maybe it'll keep the attic a little more temperate (maybe not)
Awesome job man. I am plagerising many of your details for my house. Why did you not decide to do an unvented/conditioned attic?
haha thanks! Definitely considered it but didn't have the budget for this build to do it right. I'd monopoly frame then add eaves on top followed by exterior insulation, then furring strips to fasten the roof. The traditional vented attic was an easier detail for this build when I already have a million other details to think about 😂 I think on the future addition I'm leaning towards an unvented attic with continuous insulation.
Hope you will use hearing protection, high freq sounds permanent damage
