UBOOT might be one of those rare games that i enjoyed and had fun with, but don't see myself playing again. The time comitmment to learn the rules and the difficulty of teaching it means you just cant pull it off the shelf and play. Its an event game. Still, the perfect game for some groups out there and and exceedingly clever and interesting game.
Small thing: bearings at sea like 290 are not pronounced as "two ninety", but as "two nine zero". Unless over radio, then the 9 is pronounced as "niner" and 4 as "four" to avoid confusion with other words. Some maritime nerd info :) great summary of the game!
I really like the considered recommended alternatives at the end of the video. I was interested in the overall game but you read my mind about wanting something lighter in terms of complexity and theme. I’ll give the XCOM and Kitchen Rush a look. :)
Thanks for the review, and for calling out the difficulty presented by the theme. My late father fought the Nazis in WWII, so I personally don't play games where you can be the Nazis and win. I appreciate the intricacy of this design but will leave it for others.
I'd love to play this game with my group, as everyone would love the theme and gameplay. However, I think it might require too much commitment, especially since we don't meet often.
I own this game but trying to get anyone to commit to playing is like asking a stranger if they want to rewire the Pentagon. Do you see this flowing well solo? It seems like a bit much to handle all on your own and would not be as exciting as with a full crew.
I respect the devs for daring to make a really complex board game, and it's great that apps are now allowing devs to hand off some of the more boring "book keeping" to a computer/phone. Having said that... even though I love u-boat video games, this looks way too complicated to me.
I believe the app uses your device's microphone to listen to how much noise the players make while you're silent running. Makes for a tense time while being hunted by a destroyer! I backed this on Kickstarter as I'm a fan of the Silent Hunter video game series and loved the idea, but sadly I have yet to play it except for a half-baked solo test attempt about 18 months ago. But one day...
Great video, if you like this game you should definitely check out GMT P500 listing Wolfpack. It is a simulator placing you in charge of a single submarines in a Wolfpack of a solo game or four player co-op Wolfpack. I placed my order last month and the games already moved to final art work and I think this one will be a great crossover between solitaire and co-op gaming.
I'm still waiting to get enough ex or current seadogs at my house to play this or Sonar, but any time you get three or more of us in the same room it just devolves into arguing about who's job was more worthless and way too much alcohol.
If Uboot looks a bit grand, you could craft your self a copy of Dive Dive Dive. Then see how you and your friends manage the Atlantic? boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/269219/dive-dive-dive Designers that do free print n play stuff love people having a go at their designs. ~ smiles ~
Yeah, no offense to anybody who enjoys this game but this isn't for me or my gaming group. I don't see pitching that theme to friends and family. However, thanks for recommending "Kitchen Rush".
Oh my, how much i want to have this game. But have noone willing to play this type of game with me. As an reanactor i would enjoy it only while wearing a kriegsmarine uniform.
You'd also have to play it inside a tub at the bottom of a pool for the full feeling. But yes, great simulationist friendly game, you can really get into character with it
@@3MBG tub in pool is an unpractical extreme, but room full of smoke from pipes packed by homegrown tobacco and glasses full of rum and portwein. Now thats an immersion ;)
The game looks fascinating, but the theme is not my cup of tea. I might be up for trying a more streamlined SciFi version. I can imagine having all the same roles on a slow moving star cruiser or something being quite fun.
I thought it would make a great "klingon bird of prey" game. As the cloaking would be like diving, and the birds of prey are silent hunters like Uboots
While I like the theme, needing an internet connection for a board game is a no go.Sorry, I then rather play silent hunter or cold waters on my pc. I enjoy Cpt. Sonar, though...
Sounds very cool, but when you say "mobile app needed" you are basically saying: "In a few years, the app will not be compatible with newer phones and your game will become a dust collector in the shelf"
That's not remotely true, well, it might be if you are on apple. But emulators and other systems keep apps going forever. Or, if you are super worried about it. When your phone is old and you are about to replace it, put that phone in the box and turn off updates.
I own this game and am committed to finding a group that will see it played to its fullest. This freaking pandemic has everything on hold though. Booo.

How about captain sonar ?
Very different games, despite being real time and submarines. That said, sonar is another game thats likely not to hit the table again

thanks for this, I was looking for a concise summary to show to my gaming group before we give it a go and this is perfect
Cheers. This was probably the hardest game i've ever done a summary for. A lot got missed and i really just aimed for the high notes.
I was looking for Linux Uboot for making boot images on devices but dear god this game looks VERY involved, but you explained it very well!
Hahahaha, the internet can take us on weird and wonderful side trips. Glad you enjoyed it

Solo would be hard, a lot of pausing
@@3MBG I thought the app couldn't be paused? If so I would think this is near impossible to play solo
It can be paused. We used pause a bit on our training mission.
@@3MBG thats a relief. that was my biggest worry about playing for the first time that the game would get away from me while explaining rules
I just watched Greyhound last night with my dad. Funny how this popped up on my feed!
That's the wonder of tagging. I added "battle for the atlantic" and "submarines" to the video, which is why it would have popped up
I would absolutely love a "reskin" of this game where you command a Gato class submarine in the Pacific.
See, i want a reskin of this where you command a Klingon Bird of Prey ;)

Great review. Seems interesting but maybe a bit much for my group to tackle.
This game looks pretty awesome, but as mentioned very complex! Half of my group is way to casual for this, so I'll stick with Captain Sonar haha.

Ha, we did not turn that feature on :) We are noisy and we were learning. They would have heard us in scapa flow.
Haha, that probably wise for the first game or two! :D
When the Saigon expansion for Fire in the Lake comes out, I'd love to see a 3 minutes FITL video, with or without the expansion :) .
Very very unlikely due to a massive conflict of interest between me as a reviewer and the COIN series.
This game was meant for me

Castle panic? Another fun co-op that easy to play, lots of fun, and expansions too!
Great game, but very different :)
It's a board game? Looks like a real job...
I'm still waiting to get enough ex or current seadogs at my house to play this or Sonar, but any time you get three or more of us in the same room it just devolves into arguing about who's job was more worthless and way too much alcohol.
Lol. I still reckon it would be fascinating to observe a game that did involve submarineers, and not quite so much booze.
Ooh-boat? Is that how it's supposed to be said? I've been saying Yew-Boat.
According to my German speaking partner, its something like that, yep :)
@@3MBG TIL
Bare in mind i tend to stuff up pronunciations with my accent :)
That looks amazing, but I'd never find anyone to play it. Alas...

Yeah, also Rush MD as well from the same series. This is not a game theme everyone will be on board with for sure.
@@3MBG Awesome! I'll definitely check that out.
I had a chance to get this game but never did as I was afraid it will only get played once or twice. Man how I regret it now 😅

Don't like apps in board games. Good video by the way
I only like them if they offer an experience you couldn't get without them. So UBOOT works, its a game that couldn't work any other way.
This game sounds insane haha
Hahahaha, it so is. Amazing and terrifying in equal measure
I own this game and am committed to finding a group that will see it played to its fullest. This freaking pandemic has everything on hold though. Booo.
Yeah, i got this in like Feb, it took until recently to get it on the table. As we have some of the most relaxed Covid rules now
I might have been interested, but that theme sounds genuinely terrible.
Poormans Captain sonar!
I hate ap games. I will just play a video game.
