  • The Buzz on Maggie was this cool little show about a Fly who lives in a milk carton at a junkyard. Well, there's a lot more to it than just that, but The Buzz on Maggie seemed to come and go so fast for its time on Disney, so today, let's take a look at what The Buzz on Maggie was all about and what happened to it!

I beyond miss this style of show, I’m glad we have a few newish style shows that follow this such as “the ghost and Molly McGee” but idk, the 2000’s just hit different. Most modern shows don’t have the “soul” or maybe it’s that we the viewer are desensitized and lack the ability to enjoy.
      Idk

(Commenting before I finish the vid) This was one of those shows that wind Disney initially announced that this will be premiering I thought it was going to be stupid. And I ended up being very wrong, And it became a sleeper hit for me.
What episode I specifically remember is, This day they encountered a rare endangered bug and we’re trying to find a girlfriend for him… Anyways right vid man as always

This, along with Foster's, MLP, and Mucha Lucha, are my go-to examples to show that flash can work if you go for a certain style, specifically one based on thick lines and simple 2-D shapes. Complex, realistic designs are less effective, since their movement is more suitable for hand-drawn than vectors.

In theory you could use Adobe Animate (formerly adobe flash) to animate in the traditional sense. You would just have to draw every frame one at a time. (Also I think it might be vector-based which means it has a bit more of a learning curve if I remember correctly. It's one of my least used Adobe products). All that being said it's faster to use tools like tweening and such to get motion done faster. Those techniques don't look awful, and there's definitely still skill involved, but you can definitely tell if something was tweened instead of moved frame by frame.

8:27 You are right! It was a spicy take for animation from that era! So the director's comments around Flash come because of the time flash (now Animate) was mostly a web tool. Designed for animations on the web, and there was like a stigma on the quality of those. Many amateur animators used it on that time, and ended up with thing that maybe professional animator would scoff at. They considered a limited tool full of cheap animation relying too much on "tweens", and losing many of the expressions that hand animation would give more easily and faster on the other hand.
And yeah, you "could argue" that... but its no different than attacking something like "reboot" for looking terrible, I mean , it was a new tool with little experience to account for, it was going to look a bit wonky, you can see it a lot on those old puppet-rigged animation shows like this or Mucha Lucha. You can compenstat with good character design and good storytelling though.
The problem was that it was not a common tool to use in professional TV animation. People would rather use Toon Boom Studio (the hand drawn one, not the digital rigged that ended up making as one tool later), or something like TV paint (still very much used), using hand draw frame-by-frame animation. At that time only digital painting and digital cleaning of paper drawings.
So yeah, the director was defending the use of the tool on a professional capacity in a world where it was not well received and had poor image among professional (even now there are some comments deriding animation saying "it look like a flash animation", it point to this very issue). Certainly "Mucha Lucha" was a trailblazer of sorts for this techniques, and the director was right though, the tool is as good as you learn how to use it, and he was proven right eventually.
This as you may have guessed has changed a lot. Newer shows like Ducktales 2020 or Molly McGee or Cuphead look very good, knowing much better techniques for puppet animation, and actually use a hybrid of rigged + frame by frame animation. The question tends to be the proportion of each technique (for example Cuphead and Molly McGee are very puppet + some hand drawn here and there, to support whereas Ducktales 2020 is the actual opposite, lots of frame by frame with some help with puppet-style in some shots).
I suppose it still doesn't full 24 frame by frame animation made from experts (i..e. james baxter animations in Adventure time or Bobs burgers, or every single smooth animation instance in The Owl house, which are amazing to look at)... but that its why its reserved for those beautiful shots (or full animated 2D movies)
And there are still shows that prefer frame by frame animation, but the will do all digitally, I don't believe that may be many people that still do paper animation, but I know of some do this for the quality of the line and the pencils, but tend to do it on very short segments for very special moments of a show.
But yeah a lot of knowledge and expertise has been attained and imparted since those old flash web animation days. That's why you can see the different and refinement in modern shows

8:28 Animator here! At the time yes, but in a broad sense, not really. Contrary to popular belief, Flash (now Adobe Animate) is perfectly capable of traditional frame-by-frame animation. That was how I started, and some of the most influential Japanese animators of the last 15 years like Shingo Yamashita used Flash.
Now what he’s most likely referring to is rigged or puppet animation, which is what many think of when they think of “Flash” animation( ie when body parts are rigged to bones and tweened around). That would’ve been more of a hot take at the time because of how new the idea was, so there were some growing pains. However today, really good rigged animation is almost indistinguishable from traditional frame-by-frame animation. A lot of the modern Looney Tunes shorts are rigged, and you would never notice.
Most animators today wouldn’t bat an eye to that take now, but I think a little of the stigma is still there to the general public. Especially if it isn’t done particularly well like when the ‘03 Teen Titans were rigged in the TT vs TTGo movie.

I think the show stuck around just long enough and stayed for as long as it needed too, it's a great show and was one of my favorites growing up. But much like Jordan said the show didn't have much else to offer, every episode was a lesson episode and while it didn't feel dry or stale to me personally there is only so much you can do with it. Personally if we ever get anything out of the show ever again I would prefer comics or a one last hit Movie with a plot of Maggie maybe wining a contest to play with a big rock group only to find her parents refuse to let her go as it's much too far and in the big city where someone of her age shouldn't be alone. Ropes Aldrin into taking her with her youngest brother tagging along secretly or she straight up runs away and learns on her own that she really doesn't understand how the world works just yet.
Of course she'd end up making it to the show along with everyone else who was worried about her and then maybe a ending scene that shows here the characters end up in life. I really hate it when shows just end and don't show us where the characters end up, like I want to know if they made their big dream come true or if they had to make a whole different dream happen! But yeah, I loved the show and I think it was a neat and interesting thing for the time when it aired.

I only know about this because of some pic on DeviantArt called "The Brave Little Fly Girl," which had Maggie lead a group of random characters (like Homestar Runner and Zatch Bell) on some kind of quest and everyone assumed Maggie was an OC (do not steal).

I remember seeing that Curtis armstrong the voice actor who plays as my favorite character Dan in this show and I think Dan vs is such a great show not a lot of people may remember it because it was on the hub the program that got overshadowed by my little pony but that didn't stop Dan vs from having crossover commercial where pinky pie messed up Dan's car but all that the commercial just did was repainted Dan's car pink even though you can clearly see the wolf marks on it so Dan vs during the time was having an identity crises

I remember. Love the theme song. Didn't know it didn't air very long, what a shame. Seen the credits while I was in North Carolina. It could've had so much potential. And it makes flies look good. (They're my least favorite animal.)

I remember this show and to be honest I was upset that the show ended so quickly and there wasn't even going to be a season 2. I was hoping there would be more about this show and that if it was alive, then it would've been shown one of the most famous disney series just like the others, for example like Kim possible, The Proud family, American Dragon, Lilo and Stich, and other disney shows. I'm really glad you brought another old disney show up..! And I feel like this show deserves maybe one more chance

8:08 That is indeed a spicy take, and a fully correct one. There's shows that use flash to great utility, and make it seem natural and bouncy like a traditional 2D cartoons. Then, there's THE flash look that everyone criticizes when they hear the term. The type that seems stiff with limited in-between frames and just like everyone's a marionette puppet. It's a stark difference that is jarring and uncomfortable to look at. Fairly OddParents, Arthur, and Cyberchase are some popular negative examples to reference when they transitioned to flash. But even Phineas and Ferb: Candace Against the Universe has key frames that look as if it's about to switch to flash and really makes ones heart drop 😨, as that's the one great animated show you DON'T want to see go that route (with it revived for two more seasons, kinda worried they might cut corners to save costs as it's an older IP now and only coming back 😞; doesn't have to try as hard now that it's fully established).
