I would imagine your spine is either overextended or flexed, if you have a neutral spine you should be able to active your glutes, or you might need to point your toes more out
what do you do for warm ups? sometimes I warm up only my shoulders so not to injure rotator cuff. but often do very light weights as warm ups (like bench press). thanx
