  • A plug-in hybrid for the countryside set
    The Land Rover Discovery Sport is the spiritual successor to the Freelander, and it seems that it’s proving to be just as successful as its forebear because you see them absolutely everywhere. However, such is the popularity of premium mid-size SUVs these days that you could say exactly the same about the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Volvo XC60 with which it competes. In this CarGurus UK video review, Rebecca Jackson finds out how the Land Rover stacks up against its popular rivals.
    Unlike most of those rivals, the Discovery Sport, which has recently been facelifted, can be had with seven seats. That’s not the case with the car in this video, though, because this is the range-topping plug-in hybrid version, which has batteries and motors stored in the space where the third seating row would normally go. The PHEV gets 305bhp from a combination of a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine and a 108bhp electric motor, while the 15kWh battery should be good enough for around 30 miles of electric-only running. And if the mood takes you, that 30 miles needn’t even be on Tarmac. This is a Land Rover after all, so has more off-roading ability than any other car in the class.

    If the only criticism you could find to knock it was the slightly plastic or click sounding seat adjustment controls, then I think it will be just fine for most people.

    Had mine for 6 weeks. Went to the P300e from a Jag I-Pace. Loved the Jag but this is better. Not as fast clearly or as dynamic, but more comfortable, more refined and the hybrid system means range anxiety is for me a thing of the past! Great product from JLR.

    My wife changed her 2019 Audi Q5 for hybrid Discovery last month, its SE version with Pan Roof, It’s company car so tax savings are appreciated. It’s matches Audi for perceived quality and feels nicer to drive, new touch screen is so much better than in my FTYPE.... and so nice not be in slightly left field choice....last week we went to county show and it rained, were we parked was on an incline, we pulled seven cars out of the mud, one was a X3 lol 😂

    I have the same instruments in my Evoque - a mix of digital and analogue - I really like them and it works well. The Disco Sport is really nice and basically a longer version of the Evoque. Only trouble at the moment is getting hold of one! 12 month delivery times for many models due to the chip shortage.

    Had ours just over a month now and it's genuinely brilliant. Mostly town use but have done some long journeys too and are averaging over 90mpg. Bought it as a private buyer and do not regret it one bit. If you get it in R-Dynamic trim it looks pretty cool too and because it's not a Range Rover so no one thinks your a dick either. Win, Win.

      I use mine 30mi+ daily, the 20inch wheels take a little range off, the biggest effecting factor is temperature (and the features you use when cold) in warmer weather we get ~32mi. Right now we're getting ~20mi.

    I've had one since the first of March, have done 7kmiles so far. I charge at home and work so very rarely use the hybrid mode but it has been great for our trips to North Wales and the Isle of Wight.
    In HSE spec the larger wheels make the range 18-20 miles in very cold weather like the moment but on nice warm days 32mi is just about achievable if you drive aiming for max range.
    The noticeable drop in quality that annoys me is the climate control, I put the heaters on my feet and only my feet fairly often. Despite only the low vents being selected my face is still buffeted from the upper vents. Nissan Micra's managed to get this right in the 80s so how LR can't get it right on a £55k car in 2021 is beyond me.
    8.5/10 (knocking 1.5 off for range and climate flaws)

    Always hated the Discovery sport never saw the point of it as the rear 3rd row seats were crap and right up against the tailgate so in a rear impact crash against a loaded van or lorry say goodbye to whoever is sat back there. Small 7 seaters make no sense at all.

    • @StephenFogarty2023
      @StephenFogarty2023 2 года назад +3

      It’s a great vehicle.
      Row 3 very useable for kids and teenagers.
      Having the ability to carry six or seven people comes in handy.
      Proper curtain airbags to rear of the vehicle
      Proper Row 3 headrests.
      X3 & Q5 etc are 5 seat only.
      Row 3 is definitely a USP for the DS.

    • @interceptor-ss8kb
      @interceptor-ss8kb 2 года назад +1

      @@StephenFogarty2023 because curtain airbags are going to save whoever is in the 3rd row in a rear impact from a lorry also the 3rd row is never comfortable for a teenager. I would find it hard to relax knowing any of my kids are sat back there. The only 7 seater which was rear crash tested multiple times when developed was the XC90 because Volvo went to great lengths to make sure it was safe for every Passenger.

    I would probably recieve some hate comments after this but truth must be said. German attitude means they do not sacrifice quality over economics (or at least much less than the Brits) but British mentality always thinks of budget, margins and money even at the cost of compromising quality. That seat button is one example of it not to mention reliability for that matter. Hence, a big no to British cars over German and Japanese ones.

      That might have been the case a few years ago but times have moved on. I’ve had three Evoques over the last 8 years (the latest is a PHEV) after a couple of decades of driving Audi. The latest Land Rovers feel a different order of luxury over Audi.
      Forget the rattles seat adjustment- set the memory seats on day 1 of ownership and you’ll never touch them again.

      Not a hate comment but I’m not sure I agree. Mercedes quality went down drastically when accountants got their way, and you only need to look at the VW emissions scandal - cheaper to write cheat software than actually make the engines cleaner.

    • @MD-qt1jh
      @MD-qt1jh 2 года назад +1

      @@Kenny_P_abz kind of agree with you on the fact that German quality is disapoearing but my comparison was relative. I guess that is the case in future that quality will converge for all manufacturers but at least for now Germans have the upper hand. Maybe not so in the next 5 years.

    • @nigelk780
      @nigelk780 2 года назад +2

      As said above your in the past. I have 5 german cars at the moment and can assure you that cost cutting and the need to pay high german wages is increasingly more evident in each generation. Also my then new 2014 LC3 land cruiser was a poor show with excessive rust and mechanical failures in the 8yrs and 80000 miles i owned it. If your looking for good value its not german or Japanese its Korean.
      For the first time in my life I might actually buy a landrover as the competition is wilting so maybe will meet in the middle.
