That line was the best in the shows history. It got Florence a permanent role. "How come we overcame and nobody told me" .. could not have a more perfect delivery.
Hey, can you explain what she meant by that, English is not my first language. Thanks
@@antoineagagiors4013 She meant how come we as black people became rich and can live lavishly and no one told her
Also, she is surprised that the Jeffersons and the Willis'es could rent in a luxury apartment which were historically apartments that wouldn't rent to black people, even if you could afford to live there.

Yeah, but she got hers and Florence wasn't even trying.

The Jeffersons still comes on television. Same as Good Times, Gilligan’s Island, The Flintstones, etc. They comes on different digital channels though. I always watch Good Times😁.

😄 Loved when Florence called Mother Jefferson the cook. 💖
That had me rolling with laughter!
Ditto!
I'm shocked that Florence didn't hire her just for that crack!
I love how Mother Jefferson plays the audience.
Well how come we overcame and nobody told me? Always cracks me up.
Best of the good ol days😃😃😃
How come we overcame and no one told me 🤣🤣🤣 Florence killed me with that 🤣🤣
The Jeffersons were funny as hell 😂😂😂
Still are, thanks to RUclips, we can enjoy em all over again!!!
Great chemistry
Florence: "Ooooo, look at that kitchen. And I see that you got a cook too." ROTFLMAO at Mother Jefferson's look after Florence said that.
She pretty much gave Mother Jefferson a dose of her own medicine XD
Zara was a great stage actress and acting teacher

Norman Lear.... The GENIUS behind "The Jeffersons" ..!!
On the other hand!! Mother Jefferson was hilarious!!
Hard to believe Florence is almost 90 yrs. old. Where did the time go?
Classic scene! So funny though. George really liked her and even hired her but later on throughout the years, he stop liking her and wanted her fired!😂
One of my favorite shows humble beginnings
One of the greatest TV lines ever!
When I was kid, I never understood why The Jeffersons would sell a house to a move to an Apartment. Now I get it!
Explain it to me.
@@Michelle-pn9xt No grass to cut, snow to plow, roof to fix, dog crap to clean up. Living in an apartment gives you about 50% of your non-working time back to you.
@Don Pinkston I want one! I'm tired of cutting grass.
That old 2 story house in Queens (near the All in the Family Bunkers) wasn’t nearly as luxurious as the upper East side Manhattan. Question is did they buy the apt or was it a rental? The latter made no sense.
@@imar3248 Apparently it's a co-op building. So it's called an apartment, but you buy rather than rent: www.realtor.com/news/trends/how-much-the-jeffersons-deluxe-apartment-in-the-sky-cost/
I still love these shows. watch them all time.
Watching the jafferson after so many years... He reminds me of my dad.. We loved the show!!re.watching with my kids is epic ♥️
Zara was such a funny actress.
Thank you for all the happy television memories!🌹🌹🌹😊😊😊😊
Marla Gibbs reprised her role when they re-created this whole episode on Live In Front of a Studio Audience. Marla is currently the only one in this scene that’s still alive today. Marla is also the first Jeffersons cast member to reach their 90th birthday.
2021: Marla Gibbs (Florence) received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.
Mother Jefferson reminds me of a black version of Sofia on Golden Girls
Such a genuine and happy show.
For people of goodwill.
Brilliant Performance by Ms Gibbs!
Louise grounded George Jefferson!
Did I imagine it or The Jefferson set was first aired as All In A Family?
YES, IT WAS. 😊
yeah it the episode "the Jefferson's Move On up"
Well...on the other hand...
LMAO 😂
Mother Jefferson doesn't need an " Umbrella" for her SHADES
She just let it rain like nobody's binizzz 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
and what made it funny was how she could turn anything Louise did into shade.
Zara Cully only did a fewer episodes during seasons 3 and 4 of The Jeffersons episodes between 1976 and at the end of the 1977-1978 season because she was very sick and passed away in July 1978
Gosh what a superb actress Dame Zara Cully was.
Helen says thank you, Florence when she offered to get another job at the agency. How did she know her name if that was their first time meeting? Maybe she visited Diane at Helen's place or it was a TV blooper.
George in his late thirties had a mother in her early 80's
George: She's hired!
Me: Oh, damn, George just sealed his own fate.
well she did make it seem she was a hard worker.
In her interview with the Television Academy, Isabel said that Zora would look at the script and said “Oh, I have to be mean to you again this week”, and Isabel told her “If you want your job, you will be mean to me again this week!” The whole cast got along and loved each other! That’s why you can see the great chemistry of hurling insults at each other between Florence and George, and Louise and Mother Jefferson. If they didn’t like each other, they wouldn’t have set each other up so well in their comedic sparring!
Florences intro to America-one of the best episodes of the shows 10 seasons
I loved that show
This was a classic episode.
I grew up 👀 Watching the Jefferson 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
2:35, LOL!!
Love Florence. This show was the best
They tried to re-create The Jeffersons recently. There is NO recreation of The Jeffersons. Watch and enjoy the original sitcom.!!!
You can recreate a show, but what makes a show great isn’t just the show, it’s the chemistry between the people on the set.
Jefferson is a classic show...
This is the only episode I've seen Florence and Mother Jefferson actually in the same room.
I was curious how they got along but I can't seem to find any other one!
Why are all these trolls commenting about political correctness?
Classic show but in today's pc climate I doubt it will be seen for what it was
That ole woman was a mess...lol
You mean,' a riot '.
Florence really made the show
Lot clear than other channels.
Certain people forgot that A very Certain people could not text in those days
Good quality show...The best...God bless the stars...
Good old Florence...
I miss shows like this.
oh.how i wish for those days
How come we overcame and nobody told me? 🤣🤣🤣😂 I know right? Same like Texas slaves was last to be freed from slavery.
I loved The Jefferson’s I considered it the best spinoff of any TV series! I thought Norman Lear casted the characters perfectly! A lot of people didn’t know that Isabel Sanford (1917) was actually 21 years older than Sherman Hemsley (1938) that Zara Cully a.k.a. Mother Jefferson (1892) would have been 46 years old when she gave birth to her son George.
Almost everyone from this extraordinary and funny TV series is gone... Except Marla Gibbs who played Florence Johnson, Damon Evans who portrayed (the replacement) Lionel Jefferson Seasons 2 & 3... and the Willis’ two children Berlinda Tolbert who played Jenny and Jay Hammer who portrayed Allan Willis.
jane doe
A lot of people you know this is common knowledge to the people like the people on the show!
I love Florence!
Still a great show.
What does she mean by "how come we overcame?" Does she mean, overcome like in a financial situation?
She meant Black people with affluence living in a luxury building on the upper East side in New York.
@@fnihp30 That’s the perfect explanation!
She is referencing generally Martin Luther King's line "We shall overcome" a decade or so earlier. And saying "we overcame?" like it has already happened and yet Florence missed it.
I love mother Jefferson
Currently looking to see if. I missed an episode
And to think: this was the very FIRST episode!!! (◍•ᴗ•◍)
and the rest is history
Lovely ☺️😉
I couldn’t stand Mother Jefferson. She was such a JERK. That lady played that part so well.
They were great friends off the set.
@Bigfriendly15 The kitchen dialogue, in one of Mother Jefferson's final appearances, was hilarious.
@@trainboy4024 Yup. Isabel Sanford is the reason why Zara Cully got that part in the first place. Isabel said that Zara was looking to play a part like that, but hadn't been able to find one until The Jeffersons came along. She said she called her, and told her about it when she found out they would be looking for a Grandmother, since they were already friends from doing live plays together for a long time.
Jeffersons - All in the Family - Dr. Seuss - The Big Hurt - You're not required to like any of it. Equal rights under it law IS required. Cultural tolerance, acceptance and even celebration is a blessing enjoyed by some...

Diane was boring 😴 so glad that Florence got the job
in the beginning of the show the jeffersons family show ms luise was stating she needed money because she was having finacial problems but needed money and also a maid how but then felt uncomfortable that was odd

Yes indeed it is 😊 what it was all about 😊 Cuzzz
Louise and Mother Jefferson downgraded each other as always
GeorgeJefferson
They don't make shows like these anymore. They were clean and funny. None of all this woke crap. People now and days have lost their sense of humor and always offended. That's why they are so grumpy.
Our generation was taught to face reality and learn to deal with it. This generation has been shielded from reality. That’s why you have record levels of young adults on anti anxiety medication. They were not prepared for the real world and can’t handle it.
Mother Jefferson never liked Luise
😂
Good clean wholesome fun. No LGBTQ representation and all kind of nonsense that is in every show these days.
this show tried to show everyone could make it if you worked hard. The term systemic racism (or the usage of the words) was not really evident at the time.
Except Louise didn't work, lol. Though there was one episode where she took a job because she said she was bored out of her mind and ended up working for George's competitor. I'm not sure why she didn't work at the Jefferson cleaners. Maybe George insisted she not do it idk
Well they are moving on up to the dead side , the Jefferson's never got a casket in the sky ,

Shut up . I'm white and I loved the Jefferson's . Good clean humor . In the 70s I went to school with black students . We were friends . We all copied the Jefferson's and JJ on Good Times . We weren't offended . Sadly because of cancel culture everybody is afraid to enjoy the diversity .
