Just stumbled upon this video and enjoyed watching you discover and analyze old forgotten items for repurposing. My Mother had a keen eye for doing just that. She made wonderful art from very old pieces of “junk”. I’ve been lucky to have picked up on some of that insight, but use it not only around the house, but also for my classic/special interest car restoration hobby. I’ve won several car shows in my 70+ years and still own around 50 vehicles. A few are “donors”, but most are projects. Keep busy and keep having fun!
The metal “flower” you found is called an expandable anchor. A line worker for the telephone or electric Co. (I’m a lineman) would hand dig a 6-7’ hole around a foot in circumference. They then drop the unopened anchor (flower) with the rod into the hole and use a tamp to flatten the “flower” to its open position. The tamp is a 7 pound hammer on the end of a 8’ wooden handle. Then you backfill the hole to complete the install. The holding power of these anchors was significant! Great exercise installing these buggers. ✌️
Those glass things would make for cool lighting in the cabin and scrap metal is always fun. You can pick up some basic welding skills and make sculptures out of them. :)
The approach to the cabin (if that is where this road even goes) is such a rustic drive. A railroad bridge and a tunnel. All one lane waiting for your camera. Great country. Thanks for another great upload.
Spring in the West Kootenays; ice falls, rock falls, ice and rock falls... I remember 'treasure' hunting along the CPR tracks, always good for a stretch o' th' legs and few curios to happen upon. Those insulators can be used as walkway (night) light diffusers, they look good in daylight as well. Cheers from a former Castlegar guy, now in the Willamette valley. PS: Always make time to lay on the floor with Clyde-D-Bear (and the fur children.)

Wow, she's stunning. Early in my carpentry career as an apprentice I worked with a guy that talked about building the tunnels in Western Colorado for the I-70 corridor. He talked about the rough conditions, and digging/blasting out the tunnels. Bill R. Partridge Sr, RIP. Note: as a weird coincidence, my uncle talked about traveling that same route on foot making his way back home from the coast coming home from Korea. Yet again as fate would have it, I took Tae Kwon Do classes from a Korean immigrant that fought in Korea and then Vietnam for the US. Crazy how life intersects in the strangest of ways.

Dear Michygoss. 👍👌👏 2) I absolutely love the green glass insulators. How about putting an LED bulb in them and ending up having really nice looking lamps? Or doing some scrap metal art? You could fabricate a chandelier/candelabra using the insulators and some of the scrap metal you found. Especially the piece that is shaped like a turbine wheel. On the same threaded rod is another very interesting, bowl shaped piece. I would also grab all the zinc coated stuff. You can reuse or upcycle it while building your workshop etc.. Turn those glass insulators upside down as furniture feet. You'd need an attached central cylinder to fit down inside the insulator. If you salvage what they are screwed onto, property sized, they can be attached to the bottom of the furniture
Oh yes, Your fur babies will love the doggy doorway for sure. We now have 6 big dogs and my wife asked me to install a bigger doggy doorway so it is done along with a little porch for them to just lay out in the sun and enjoy their porch. Enjoy and be Safe.

Will be nice to see when you guys finally get your boat back home. You have such a good imagination and talent on how to build and decorate your cabin on the mountain cliff. On those metal brackets that you unscrewed the insulators off of, and if you had enough of them could somehow implement those on a railing around your decking. Maybe using ropes as a go-between the brackets. I don't think cable would be very good, too hard to work with. Anyway just an idea I know whatever you come up with will work perfectly. Again really enjoy all of your videos. Looks like it's gonna take some big machinery to get those boulders out of the road. Hope you and Steve have a good day.

Michy, Whenever my Boxer dog Timber passed gas it startled him so much that Timmy would jump up and look around. That always made me laugh for his entire 14 years with me. I too love discovering old items left by folks who were here before me. In my Sierra mountain home I find relics left by the early 1800's loggers and ancient artifacts left by the native Miwok people who lived in my canyon. Exciting to discover any wonderful connection to the past.

Hi Michelle. The bar with the bolts you found is a joint bar used to connect two rails together. Railroads used one on each side of connecting the rails. Nice to now have a dog door. Watch out for racoons now. I talk from expience. I agree with the one who said good you were on the home side of the slide. Michelle your still the most gorgous woman. Great video. It's really quite incredible the amount of discarded railroad debris, and other junk, just left to rot in nature from past generations. It was very irresponsible, without forethought, and careless, especially the discarded glass. Very nice dog food cabinet. Nice work.
I see a lot of tail holds that could be used to attach a snach block to. When I go out in the back roads I take some 3/4 to 1" sampson line 3 lengths of 5/8 100 feet each. A bunch of 5/8 crosby shackles and a few 3/4 crosby shackles. Now with a few of the tail holds I bet in a couple of hours I could skid most of those larger rocks off the side. Leaving the biggest till the last then collect all my stuff have a nice lunch with me and my dog. Set the timer and have a nice snoose 🙂 wake up and tackle that big rock. Now I will know in 45 minutes weather im going to be able to safly move that big rock off the road and over the side and down that bank or just twist it so it sits side ways to the road. That would give me enough room to sneek right by it. Go on out to the point look around take a few pictures. Make a nice stake dinner have some wine stare at the stars crawl in my blanket spend the night out their. Wake up early clean up put somthings away go for a walk about. By noon should be ready to leave with some great picks of my adventure have a great storie of how I did a hard days work. Like the pioneers might have. But instead of using horse pow I would use the HP of the truck. Get back to life around dinner put my stuff away. Get some things out of the fridge maby some harty Pasta thing happining. Can you take a guess what it could be. It don't take long when most of the ingredances have been done up a while back. crack the top off another bottle of red shower up turn on some tunes. Have a conversation with the dog, if the evning is nice sit out side take in some quiet before turning in. Sounds fine. Yep👍😊

Moral of this story is carry a 40-60 ft , 4-6 inch wide 60k tow strap so you can use your truck to drag those smaller rocks out of the way. Looked to me you coulda gotten around. Also, a Johnson bar is always handy to have in the truck. P.S. those glass insulators can be worth money
The tracks you saw were either wild hogs, or feral pigs. Don't know if they are a problem in your area, but be careful with the dogs around pigs and keep a gun close - they will attack for no good reason. Love the videos!

bring a pry bar next time to get those wooden angled insulator mounts! screw them to the wall and you can have the complete mount.. And bring those galvanized mounts! Put an LED in them for porch ambiance..

First visit. My “enthusiasms” run much the same as this adventure. I’m attracted to the glass, metal , rocks, and lots of etc. 😂 I was descending a wet , frozen bank not so long ago and slid on my backside about 10’ and stopped up against a tree. No real harm, know I’m leashed to my service dog Kenny and am using a cane. The tree broke off when a tried to get up and I needed to roll onto my belly to get my knees under me. When I saw your descent I cracked up!! At least you have a fart machine to match the skid marks ❤
Best ad on the tube. I didn’t skip it or fwd it. Also. I bought and used the first. Erosion for years. Some of the best money I spent and money for laughs was so many more enjoyable laughs than anything else I could’ve bought. The subwoofer is a novelty but is nice to have.

Use the insulators as lighting . Put an led bulb up inside them . Now that I think about it a fixture or lamp that uses a number of them each with a light inside ! I bet that you could build a really nice hanging dining or foyer fixture .

I had been just wondering if the gas regulator vent ( exhaust ) is the minimum required ( code ) distance from the edge of the doggie door ! Although , I'd be more concerned based on wind direction past the gas meter. I was surprised that the old csa code says 1 foot . I guess they don't make it the three foot tier , possibly because they have a very low expectation of failures of the regulator . BTW - Quite the scenery you have to deal with out west . 😁 Our young 20 y/o music instructor is from BC while she attends uni here . P.S. - Luna is a cutie and VERY well behaved while exploring . Oh and the CPR called .... they want their glass fixtures back .... Maybe to avoid littering and dumping fines 🙄. .

The doggie door is nice , until you get an unwanted guest such as a rat 🐀 , a snake 🐍 , or a raccoon
Had a doggy door 10 years, and counting, NEVER had an unwanted "guest" make an appearance; with three dogs, most critters stay well clear.
We had a baby possum that had lost its mother trying to get in from the cold. We called the critter people ...the ones that save them, not kill them.

Hi, how far does the train grade go. Here in North Carolina they turn old train grades into hiking trails called rails to trails.

bring a pry bar next time to get those wooden angled insulator mounts! screw them to the wall and you can have the complete mount.. And bring those galvanized mounts! Put an LED in them for porch ambiance..

First visit. My “enthusiasms” run much the same as this adventure. I’m attracted to the glass, metal , rocks, and lots of etc.
😂 I was descending a wet , frozen bank not so long ago and slid on my backside about 10’ and stopped up against a tree. No real harm, know I’m leashed to my service dog Kenny and am using a cane. The tree broke off when a tried to get up and I needed to roll onto my belly to get my knees under me.
When I saw your descent I cracked up!!

I think the insulators would make a really cool looking chandelier! Love the color of them. Maybe even make a rope light out of them.
Best ad on the tube. I didn’t skip it or fwd it. Also. I bought and used the first. Erosion for years. Some of the best money I spent and money for laughs was so many more enjoyable laughs than anything else I could’ve bought. The subwoofer is a novelty but is nice to have.

Can't believe what complete disregard for the environment these workers had; so much junk just pushed over the edge, i'm sure the wildlife just loved these guys. Just as well you are clearing some of it away, and I love your upcycling ideas !

Use the insulators as lighting . Put an led bulb up inside them . Now that I think about it a fixture or lamp that uses a number of them each with a light inside ! I bet that you could build a really nice hanging dining or foyer fixture .

I had been just wondering if the gas regulator vent ( exhaust ) is the minimum required ( code ) distance from the edge of the doggie door !
Although , I'd be more concerned based on wind direction past the gas meter.
I was surprised that the old csa code says 1 foot .
I guess they don't make it the three foot tier , possibly because they have a very low expectation of failures of the regulator .
BTW - Quite the scenery you have to deal with out west . 😁
Our young 20 y/o music instructor is from BC while she attends uni here .
P.S. - Luna is a cutie and VERY well behaved while exploring .
Oh and the CPR called .... they want their glass fixtures back ....
Maybe to avoid littering and dumping fines 🙄.
