There's two schools of thought on this. One is that gloves keep dead skin and oils off of the food, the other is that gloves prevent you from feeling when your hands are dirty and therefore mean you wash your hands and/or change your gloves much less often.
I hate to tell you gloves are one of the dirtiest things you can use when handling food. Hands washed correctly and sanitised are far far far safer for food handling. Gloves aren't a legal requirement when handling food here. Gloves can get just as dirty as skin (someone can easily touch their face/mouth/hair/whatever with a glove on) - but there's often a false assumption that if you're wearing gloves it's automatically safe. This has been shown to (in some cases) decrease handwashing/glove changing to stop contamination because people assume gloves = clean. So the focus is on proper, regular, thorough handwashing to ensure safety. Not sure where you're based, but the UK has a far, far lower incidence of food-related illnesses than the US - 14.8% of population in the US vs 1.5% of the population in UK in 2018, for example. So gloves aren't the big deal here!

To the people complaining about their lack of gloves, let me inform you about something. This thing exists called washing your hands thoroughly before handling food.
I worked at a buzy 300 seat restaurant in late eighties and nineties and we didn't use gloves back then and this place had a one plus hour wait also and no one got sick. When they started using latex gloves every week someone was getting sick. Most people have no clue what goes on behind the scenes in your local restaurants. I've seen it all and that's why I prefer to eat at home.
1:16 now this is a waste of money. The CEO got machines to save money but they have one person clumping the cheese on and another person to spread it out. So instead of paying one person at $20 an hour you're paying two people at $40 to do what the first person should have done all along.
I love how the workers are covered up so much you'd think they worked in a biohazard lab handling petri dishes of ebola except they don't wear gloves...
Because I almost guarantee they got shorted gloves during the regular supply shortages we still see today and they just rolled along with it. Certain demographics don't care and don't send hate my way for saying that. They just do their job and go home; they don't care.

Square hams are virtually non-existent in Australia now, you might find them in delis. The big supermarkets don't stock them at all, and Aldi used to sell them many years ago. I'm guessing round ham means customers will have to use two or three slices to cover a sandwich.
I worked in food service and the amount of emphasis they put on washing hands, no rings or nail polish, and constantly changing food safety gloves every hour after a hand wash was so intense. This is a huge health hazard.
All of the sandwiches that I've ever seen at convenience stores in the USA have always had expiration dates on them. I never buy anything at a store without looking at the expiration date on the package first.
I worked for a factory that made sandwiches for tesco in Leicester England.. the temperature inside the factory where I've worked was kept at 1°C no "warm cotton" food safety gloves provided to keep you warm. the bread centering was soooo satisfying!!
Bare hands? No hygienic food safety gloves?
No thank you.
Poison
The amount of people that handles one sandwich lol
How It's Made is the best show on Science Channel :D
Weird how this useful videos don t have billions of views.
because "how its actually made" is better and telles more factual stuff about how its made.
So they make a sandwich then put it in a package. I had a feeling that’s how they did it.
I wasn't sure until I saw the video.
great video! i really enjoy seeing the process behind everyday items. but honestly, do we really need pre-packaged sandwiches? i feel like they can’t compare to a fresh one made at home, and they often seem a bit unhealthy. what do you all think?
While it's not Foogo brand, I love the tuna sandwich at circle k. They have some sort of magic pickles that override my dignity of buying sandwich in a package.😂
Fight the urge to buy another sandwich Catherine😂
thank you for sharing catherine
The perfect mix of modern automation and a half dozen strange people handling your sandwich without gloves. The shredded cheese on a cold cut sandwich is also a nice touch.
everytime I crave a pre-made sandwich I watch this video
I appreciate that I seldom if ever purchase these products.
I appreciate evn more the fact I haven't seen this brand, scary unsafe practices
The guy who narrates these episodes is the best one PERIOD.
I prefer the other guy. I think his name is Robin Banks.
In England the pre pack sandwiches are completely made by people on minimum wage, usually with little to no butter at all to maximise profits.
did it temp working for a half day thats how utterly terrible that job was I couldn't even make it to lunchtime. and it was disgusting I never buy pre made sandwiches anymore seeing what I've seen (UK too)
@@Mikebuster scary thought I very rarely eat pre made sandwiches..after watching this it'll be even more rare lol
@@Mikebuster Did the sandwich makers spit on them? Be honest.
Why would you need to butter the people on minimum wage? To make them work faster?
To the people complaining about their lack of gloves, let me inform you about something. This thing exists called washing your hands thoroughly before handling food.
Yeah and something called "Ha yeah right they all remember to do that all the time"
Thanks for touching my sandwhich with no gloves on.
Ikr 🤮
Go to the bathroom
The bare-hand method ensures the meat support beams are sturdy and flavorful.
Those logs of ham look tasty and healthy
I DON'T SEE YOUR LEBARON, FREDDIE. ARE THERE TWO LABARONS?
First thing I thought of 😂
You should do a How It's Made: Barf Bags I predict a surge in their use following this video.
Lol! 😂🤮
That wasn't COVID-19 friendly raw dog hands!
They bold as hell doin this on camera with no gloves 💀💀
Soooooooo, are we just not gonna wear gloves when handling wet, sticky, food ooorrrrrr...
Ewww!!🤢🤮
I completely agree with you.
That’s what makes them so good
And the lady with a ring on her left hand. Yuck
Gloves are just “cleanliness theatre”. Plain hands washed frequently are better than gloves hands that aren’t washed regularly
1:16 now this is a waste of money. The CEO got machines to save money but they have one person clumping the cheese on and another person to spread it out. So instead of paying one person at $20 an hour you're paying two people at $40 to do what the first person should have done all along.
I love how the workers are covered up so much you'd think they worked in a biohazard lab handling petri dishes of ebola
except they don't wear gloves...
My thoughts as well...and how the processed "meat" looks like cows made into soylent green o_O
Because I almost guarantee they got shorted gloves during the regular supply shortages we still see today and they just rolled along with it. Certain demographics don't care and don't send hate my way for saying that. They just do their job and go home; they don't care.
@@donmega5202 they’ve got plenty of other coverings.
gloves are good for protecting the person using them(to an extent), but get dirty just as quickly as skin. because the common perception is there 'safer' they can be counter productive in a food manufacturing environment. A good washing policy is usually better for hygiene, company spending and the environment.
And also nothing covering their mouths and noses especially in this time of Covid.
“Why aren’t they wearing gloves”
Wait until you find out restaurant employees don’t wear gloves either
Square hams are virtually non-existent in Australia now, you might find them in delis. The big supermarkets don't stock them at all, and Aldi used to sell them many years ago. I'm guessing round ham means customers will have to use two or three slices to cover a sandwich.
That and it gives the illusion that it's not mechanically reformed meat.
Square does not give that illusion.
Props to the sliced ham worker for being the only to wear gloves
I worked in food service and the amount of emphasis they put on washing hands, no rings or nail polish, and constantly changing food safety gloves every hour after a hand wash was so intense. This is a huge health hazard.
I wonder how often those machines get cleaned 🤔
"Removed the unsold ones after three days". As far as I know they stay there until they are sold a month later. I preferred making them at my home.
All of the sandwiches that I've ever seen at convenience stores in the USA have always had expiration dates on them. I never buy anything at a store without looking at the expiration date on the package first.
I don't even want to think about the picked nose to bread handling ratio
Thank you for showing us what brand NOT to buy. They’re handling the food with no gloves????
🤢
I looked the company up IMMEDIATELY 😂 to make sure I don't buy any of their products
The company hasn't existed since 2009 😂
@@sheeptasticSeb oh. I wonder why lmao
If only you knew the half of it... this is the least you should worry about consuming food you didnt prep yourself.
Gordon Ramsey doesn't use gloves...
i was like "man, im surprised by how much of this is manual" then they went "and heres the fully automated one," and it all made way more sense
Wow this is the most mind numbing job I have ever seen, surely you can’t do this for the long run you would literally go insane
That's exactly what I was thinking. What an incredibly boring job.
When you want to stop eating something, watch how it is made 🙂
It gives a new meaning to "finger food".
I’ve worked in this exact factory in Worksop England . These sandwhiches go to Asda , Co op , Lidl , Boots .
I worked for a factory that made sandwiches for tesco in Leicester England.. the temperature inside the factory where I've worked was kept at 1°C no "warm cotton" food safety gloves provided to keep you warm. You're freezing and shivering with purple lips and hands with fridges where the final packaged products are been loaded to are kept open blasting 1°C air onto you..if you've complained as agency worker you were gone from the agency completely no other job was offered..every little helps
Factory workers are treated like robots. Not humans with feelings. Absolutely sickening.
Honestly I'd be fine with working in those temps. They need to advertise positions to people like me who start to sweat when the weather enters double digits.
@@dafoex I like it cold, but even I switch from shorts to pants below 40 or so. Meanwhile, you’re still sweating in the teens? Damn!
I love triangle sentences. I find something comforting about the shape, even though I know the ingredients are not top-notch.
damn this is disturbing..I'll NEVER be eating one of these again.
this video made me grateful for my job
I can promise y'all that well washed hands are just as effective as gloves that employees touch absolutely everything with
With rings and long nails?
Its against food safety laws - look it up
@@GTC4cam Chefs working in sweltering kitchens in fancy restaurants don't wear gloves, and they're very hands-on.
@@piggypiggypig1746They have access to sink anytime. These guys don't.

This comment's section is more entertaining than the video.
for real hahahaha
Just wait for Huggbees.
😂
This is UK company Foo go. They are quoted somewhere saying “the workers detect contamination without gloves better”. I think it is around 2015/2016. I dont know if this is still their practice.
No gloves?! No thanks lol
Swallow it
You clearly don’t understand food hygiene
@gc31 LOL. Whatever you say, buddy. Enjoy the bacteria and hepatitis! ✌️
@@mopar426power mate have you ever looked at studies with infection control, food hygiene and wearing gloves?? Studies show far worse contamination and much less handwashing than when there are no gloves 🤣
Robots are the only hygenic part of this process
I really wasn't sure on how to make a sandwich, so thanks 👍
Hands on
Grandma, “are you hungry?” Me: not really. Grandma:
Nothing beats homemade sandwiches. Especially on long trips. Never trusted pre-made sandwiches. They are usually devoid of any flavours and Limited on selections.
But Interesting how they mass produce them.
road food, I used to also live on those at work. Great stuff
So sometimes the halves you’re getting are not the same sandwich 🤯
It's truly mind boggling how this factory knowingly allowed their production to be recorded with such heavy focus on these ungloved hands.
Im not hungry in a hurry anymore after watching that worker spread out that sticky cheese WITHOUT gloves and them stacking it just like that. No sir 😂😂
She wipes her arse with that hand.
how about an episode of how these machines used are made?!
Nice gloves they use while closing and stacking and handling the sandwiches!
That's really interesting, I've always wondered how premade sandwiches/wraps are made!
Interesting. Always liked these types of programs!
Insane that a factory actually let people film employees touching their bare hands and jewelry and not at least once require them to wear gloves.
NO GLOVES?! This is unheard of and terrifying 😂😂
originally posted as a reply but theres so much no gloves stuff. gloves are good for protecting the person using them(to an extent), but get dirty just as quickly as skin. because the common perception is there 'safer' they can be counter productive in a food manufacturing environment. I still trust gloves more than a stranger without ones. And usually each person has a box of gloves next to him to change the gloves every 10-15 minutes. In USA of course, in England and Europe they don’t care.
Gloves aren’t likely to have a bit of booger trapped under the nails.
The sad grab of egg salad is really what gets me
Mmmm dirty fingernail, bare hand sandwiches, delicious 😶
rich in microbes..yumyum
Nobody washes their hands after the toilet either so you get extra tasty cheese sandwiches.
