Thanks Patrick. I’m a 44 year old runner. I ran the same London Marathon in April in 3:38. Took your approach the last few months. No plan. Just ran every day. Just ran Philadelphia in 3:11. Consistency is king. Repeating 50 mile weeks and not overthinking it got me a big improvement. Thanks for being you.
Even if some folks start to suggest that your videos are just saying the same thing again and again ignore them. Your message is spot on and your consistent with your message and it might take 20 of your videos with the same message to get through to people whom want to improve their running. High mileage and consistency is the key 👍
Great simple message...the only bit not to forget is context! Achievable Consistency for one person could be 20 km per week as a new runner,or 100km as an experienced runner. We can look around at other runners on a start line ,but have no idea of background, experience, lifestyles, struggles ect. Like Patrick says find a routine that fits in with where YOU are on your running journey + life. Layering running consistency year on year builds the strong running foundation for success I guess maybe 🎊🎊
How you manage 200km weeks + working is in insane. I am hoping to peak this week at 100km two weeks out from Abu Dhabi. The message of consistency and developing a big base is one that needs to be hammered home. Great work.
Your vids are inspiring, i took to them mid last year to get ready for a big run, forgot to sub (sorry) and your name (sorry haha),.. and now i got a few big runs coming up was looking for your channel.. finally found it! And subbed :) Its a crime your channel and good message is not getting enough exposure.. As a coming 34 yr old, this year is my comeback to the pavement, gonna run year round, has been my goal for a stupid long while, been waiting too long/drinking and eating like a btch too much, but im here now hahah.. i think you're vids got something to do with it, keep it coming mate.
been following you on strava for quite some time and personally I think you are a freak of nature (in a good way:)) just because you can keep up your energy levels day in and day out. maybe you should talk about your nutrition and supplements because im interested to know how do you maintain high level energy for 6 months. I consider myself a pretty serious runner but doing around 200k for 6 months seems incredible. Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work, will cheer for you in London.
Thanks! I'll take it as a compliment haha! I really don't do anything special to have those energy levels. I just eat enough carbs to keep me going and eat when I'm hungry mainly. I also don't watch my diet that much, I eat chocolate every day etc. I think I've just built up the ability to be able to do it over time. It's amazing how the body can adapt with gradual increasing volume. I couldn't have done this 2 or 3 years ago, I would have got extremely tired after a week or 2 I'm sure. Thanks for the support in London.
Good video. I found consistency for Manchester marathon this year and ran well. Injuries have hampered consistency since and fitness declining. Hoping for a good few months ahead of London now
Watched quite a few of your vids since finding a few days ago. You should make w vid about what you eat and eating habits. I noticed you touched upon it previous vids, with the story of having to go in the woods, but maybe something more thorough? Just what you ate in a typical day. I’d also be interested in anything you did for injury prevention if anything.
Hi Patrick, thanks, I appreciate your video 👌🏻. It comes just in time as I just started increasing my weekly mileage as part of the marathon build up till April. Btw the EIM you advised has worked really well for me. I set a PB of 1.28 on the HM a few weeks ago, that's already half the distance at my marathon goal pace 😀. Good luck with your running. It looks like you are already in a great shape and there is still a lot of time untill London 👍🏻!
Thanks, the London Marathon is the main target now. I'm building up my aerobic base right now with all the mileage and will add intensity more starting in the new year. I plan to make more videos during the build up. It's hard to fit everything in sometimes!
Agreed 100% Thanks for sharing. Any chance you can do a video about the rate that you increased your running volume? I consistently fun about 75km/week and I’m planning for my next race on 7 April 2024. Hoping to increase to about 115km/week or more leading into March 2024.
New to your channel and interested in your theory. Can you say what sort of pace you are running on your consistent miles compared to your marathon race pace and do you vary the pace of your long runs. Many thanks
Thanks for the info Patrick, super inspiring what you've done in a shortish period of running seriously. Out of curiosity as your mileage clearly increased consistently over these years have you been consistently increasing your energy intake, I would assume you have to but do you do any sort of tracking or basically eat to hunger? Thanks again.
Thanks, I normally just eat when I'm hungry, but naturally the more miles I do, the more I eat. I wouldn't say though that there's a huge difference in the amount I eat even at high mileage levels. Just more carbs with each meal and a few more snacks in between meals.
Your videos are amazing. i watch all of them. Cheers from a 42 YO prepping his first marathon (in April 2024) with a goal of 3:40. (just did an half marathon in 1:44). do you think it is a realistic goal for me? Thank you in advance, my best, Lorenzo
Thank you Lorenzo! Without knowing anything about your training it's difficult to say whether that's achievable for you, but looking at your half marathon time I think so. Start building a really big base of fitness now and you will thank yourself in April when the hard work pays off. Most importantly make sure you find a way to enjoy the training. It will keep you consistent. Good luck!
Am very happy that you press home the advantages of consistent (high) mileage. This is my most consistent year to date. But just scared of upping mileage for risk of injury. Currently x3 runs a week 20km or so a week. Maybe add a short extra run? and see how it goes?
Do it mate. As long as you're not increasing more than 10% per week in terms of volume you'll be fine. Throw a "rest" week in every 4 weeks to give your body a chance to recover (lower volume, not full rest). Best of luck
Yes a shorter extra run doesn't sound too much. If you're been consistent all this year you've probably built up some strength in your body to increase the mileage a bit.
Excellent video! I watch a lot of RUclips videos about running and consistency is always something the person suggests as the most important aspect of running but why doesn’t anyone talk about progressively increasing mileage and time. The common theme of every running plan starts off with less mileage than the final week. The progression of consistently increasing the volume. Is this something that is too obvious to mention?
Thanks, I do mention this in other videos. Yes you need to gradually increase your mileage over time so your body gets used to it and you reach a peak. You'll be stronger at the end of the training period.
I really appreciate you responding! Maybe building a big base is another way of saying it. Do you think it’s better to use a running plan to help test going further each week or should it naturally happen? I know when I first started the couch to 5k, looking ahead at the weeks that said 20 minutes was pretty intimidating but it showed what is possible. Almost like allowing my mind to realize it was possible since it was under a plan that a lot of new runners used. Curious to know what your thoughts are on this.
Hi, I am a 50 year young runner, I ran a PB of 3 hr 21 mins of a avg mileage base of 50 miles per week, what should my mileage be to be able to run a sub 3 marathon in 2024, my 50th year in life. Of course following the usual rules of 80/20 etc
I really like your messages, thanks for sharing. Your commitment is amazing. My biggest issue is life always gets in the way, work, kids, travel, illness, niggle; etc. I’ve built to about 140km per week but never able to get to the same volume because of one reason or another. I wish I’d done it when I was in my 20s as it felt like I had all the time in the world!
Yes, I agree it's hard. 140km per week with everything else that goes on in life is impressive. I agree, I wish I'd done this in my 20's too. I had much more time.
I occasionally get an ache from a high hamstring tendonitis injury I had. But other than that, not too much nowadays. I used to get a lot more when I first started running and running high mileage, but now I feel like my body is much more used to it.
@@patrickmartinrunning I just had a calculation based on a full time job 8 hours sleep considering you spend and some other factors and generously speaking you got about 4-5 hours per day to spend with your family. Do you travel to a job or work from home? so this excludes any sort of daily or weekly travelling. Does this sound correct to you?

consistency, even here... 😅 some people don't understand... thanks Patrick for all the motivation!
I’m amazed at the progress you’ve made after just 3 1/2 years of running. This is not a typical person. You obviously have a lot of natural talent
Another good message Patrick .I got into London good for age .Going for sub 3 @63 years old .See you on the start line.good luck with the training
Thats great Jim, good luck with the training, I'll see you there!

You may need 60-75miles a wk over 2 cycles and you'll be Sub3 within 12months.
What Zac says!

I thought that when I was editing the video, I think it's just the angle or something! No I haven't lost weight

What shoes do you use for daily training? (Your easy runs)
Saucony Endorphin Speed 3s
How many trainers do you go through a year running 200k a week?!😅
Do you take some time off after a marathon?
Yes, it's a good idea. Ideally I'll have 2 or 3 weeks after my next marathon.
Sorry dude do you have a full time job and family with children ?
Yes!
