How I Finished 3rd In My First Marathon

In this video I talk about my marathon training for that race and how I managed to finish 3rd, as well as what the race was actually like.

I'm guessing you are injured again Patrick? If so get well soon. Great videos.
Absolutely true. Google this: Seiler's Hierarchy of Endurance Training Needs
Super impressive 😎🏃♂️
Makes me feel bad that i count down to 500km and then get a new pair!
thanks for sharing this!…brilliant advice for building base endurance, by keeping it simple (k.i.s.s.) with consistency
Amen 🙏 I can't stick to a detailed plan. I'm doing mine old school when I get started soon.
Are we gonna talk about how he has his dirty shoes on his bed
Great advice I've just started adding some ,,thanks
Such a relatable guy 👏👏👏
I love mine. Great review.
Out of curiosity, what sort of foot strike are you? Wondering how long the rubber on heel will last before disintegrating as they did on yours. I just got the Speed 4 - after having the Speed 2 and Speed 3 I can say its definitely closer to a similar ride as the Speed 2. Definitely looking forward to putting the miles in them
I think the reason why you managed to stay consistent is because you keep it fun and simple. Some need a lot of structure and planning others need simplicity. I am curious to know if you 1 year after this videso actually have implemented some of these things in your training and what the results are?
Dude, you're the real beast - raw dogging those outsoles until you can see the nylon plate. I'm truly inspired !
Can I ask a question? With your early morning runs, 2 runs a day, children and work, are you constantly shattered?
I really like your videos, keep going!📈 (Also you got a new subscriber)
When did you start running and what was the time for tgat distance?
I did exactly what you are talking about. Everything is so simple and easy. Just run, don’t care too much about the data.
Iv still got my saucony endorphin speed 1 from 2021, I have about 500 miles in them, there still good for speed work outs (in a rotation). I got them for Loch Ness marathon 3h 32m, I was happy with that in my 50s. I was gonna get rid of them, after watching this maybe not 😅
This is amazing bro - you’re such a talented runner. Would love to see you do a sub 2:20 marathon 🙌
What a bloke
😢
I'm a more mileage responder. I also feel I am able to maintain faster paces if I've maintained a certain pace for a good time / distance, and that the next progression is manageable.
Yes data is not important. Instrument may not be 100% accurate also. They just give you a rough guide.
Loved the video. It's a great story! Hopefully one next year about the time you ran sub 2hrs20 at 44.
Thanks! I hope so!
True story: I won second in my age category 60-64, and it was also my first marathon. There were only two of us in our category.
The ruthless efficiency & consistency of those twice daily runs is something to behold. Not sure how quickly you buit up to that but your body must be very resilient. What does your nutrition look like? I imagine your body needed a lot of calories to sustain those 150km weeks.
Yes I definitely needed more calories but not as much as you would think. I ate when I was hungry, but it wasn't like I was constantly eating. I think that over time my body got used to running that much and adapted. It did take time to build up to be able to do that much mileage.
You are such an inspiration and I love your videos. After watching one of your videos, I always feel motivated to work just a little bit harder on my next run. 😀
Thank you, that's great to hear.
Have you tried his methods? I find running without eating to be a lot easier, which he seems to do as well for example.
You might be the only person ever to run under 2:30 in thier first marathon and aged over 40....incredible Patrick.
Was about to write the same!.its an incredible story
I think you are one in a thousand. No matter how i try it i will not ever achieve your result
so just like everyone else: by running 150k+ weeks for years prior to attempting a marathon
@@TBasianeyes he didn’t do it for years.
@ he isn't saying the truth, if you check is strava you'll see that some of the first runs are already 4min/km at 140 heart rate. that's just not possible for a beginner runner, especially not in his late 30s
Thanks for the comment. Firstly, those heart rates are from a wrist strap which are not accurate, I have no idea what my actual heart rate was then. And secondly I may have just started running, but that doesn't mean I wasn't fit. I played other sports and was in good shape, I just didn't run. I was also running at my max on each run because I didn't understand how to train properly, which was a mistake of mine in those days.
4 min km is basic shit. Real beginner times, you just suck!@@TBasianeyes
thank you for sharing your experience in your first ever marathon. Hope I can do as well as you on first marathon targeting 2nd half next year. I really like your approach to running to just keep it simple. I also try to be simple and not very technical on my trainings. keep it up!
Patrick I poked around your Strava and one thing I noticed is early on you had quite a high HR while running fairly fast and being consistent at this speed even though it looks like it was hard on you. Did you decide you wanted to run fast and decided to ignore HR and just let it get easier over time. Which is mostly opposite they teach these days… eg 80/20 method. If so this seemed to work for you brilliantly. Results don’t lie 😊
Yes exactly, I just ran all out hard all the time at the beginning! I wouldn't do that now though. It did get results, but it's hard on the body.
@ I’d almost not wanna change it because… here you are today running in the elite group of men. 🙂
Thank you Patrick for sharing your stories! How do you explain that you were able to run a marathon that fast with no carbs? What about water? There is something very intriguing with the way you perform 😅
I was just uses to not needing to take on carbs so my body had adapted to that. I didn't take on water either no. In a hot race I couldn't do that though.
Your videos have helped me so much. I recently ran the Yorkshire Marathon and really enjoyed it.
Great video Patrick, very helpful to see your breakdown consistency on Strava
I really, really enjoyed this Patrick. I’d love to hear more stories about your races - it would be great to hear about your London Marathon for example. I’m intrigued to know if you had that gel or just carried it in your hand for 26.2 miles?! 😂
Thank you! No I didn't take the gel. I never have in a marathon. I realised that worked for me, my body had adapted to not needing the carbs.
@@patrickmartinrunning That's so good to hear, I was able to finish a PB 1:40 half marathon whilst 12h fasted recently, and I was unsure if I could do the same in a full marathon. This gives me hope!
L E G E N D
Great story and loved looking at your weekly build up. I was surprised that your long run was the day after your intervals. Do you still do that?
Thank you and no that wasn't a great idea. It was the only time in the week I could get the track run in. I wouldn't do that again. I needed more recovery time after the intervals ideally.
Wow amazing
I guess you are just training like the kenyan boys running twice a day to and from school. But I wonder if you are especially gifted because I'm not sure many runners would have the same results doing your training.
Of course hes gifted...like are you fucking well. What percentage of the population of UK can enter their very 1st marathon and finish 3rd?!!
Inspiring looking forward to seeing your next marathon
That is a great story. Thanks for sharing. Miles make champions!
amazing story, so humble, youre an incredible runner
Last year I had a speed 2. I don't know why when the shoes had done 800k, I just tried the half marathon time trial 1:46, the pebax still worked even though the shoe upper looked like it had been in the warzone. The quality of the shoe glue is also bad, maybe because it's made in China 😏
Hay Patrick , i want to know that can we run in these shoes without insole , i mean can we remove them while running. Please reply if you can .
The insoles do come out. I'm not sure if you could run in them without, they are quite thick. It would be best to ask Saucony.
Run Forest run!!🏃
100% agree about giving yourself about on long runs. I do that and almost always go beyond that point. Ran 9 miles today but at 7 miles I said “you can stop if you want” and I replied to myself…I’m good let’s keep going! When I start I always plan on 6-10 and I’m ok with whatever I end up doing. No pressure helps.
Some have just the talent that make them to fast beasts. Inga DK.
As a beginner runner, it was disconcerting at first to hear your times, as I wondered what help an elite runner could be to a beginner - but I thought your advice was good!
