  • This is an LP to digital transfer that I used as a project to learn Adobe Audition. This recording gained notoriety because of the following post by someone going by christmashtn: "Don't Laugh: The NASTIEST and DIRTIEST "Rite of Spring" I've ever heard was/is a . . . recording by the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by their then music director Bohdan Wodiczko."
After reading this, I searched for this recording. I was able to secure a sealed copy of the LP: 1981 Stolat Records (A Polskie Nagrania Production) SZM 0106. I unsealed it for this transfer.
I want to learn how to do exceptional LP transfers. For all of you pros out there, please comment. Here is my "workflow": Technics SL-1200MK2 turntable with Ortofon Arkiv cartridge to Sony RCD-W500C CD-R using Super Bit Mapping. Transfer digital information to computer. Utilize Adobe Audition to delete needle drops and to manually fix audible ticks. Utilize Wave Corrector to remove clicks and to balance channels. Utilize Adobe Audition to reduce noise, normalize to -3dB, and repair DC Offset. Apply 20 band Graphic Equalizer effect: "Bright and Punchy." Utilize DAK Wave Editor to do "fade in" and "fade out" of tracks and to combine both tracks.
All of the artwork was inspired by the "Rite of Spring." I hope you enjoy this.

It is magnificent! I'm so glad you posted it. Considering that it was recorded in 1967, the orchestra sounds rich and full. It is one of only a handful of really powerful renditions of a piece that still challenges orchestras and conductors. It is up there with recordings made early in the careers of Markevich, Boulez, Bernstein, Karel Ancerl, Seiji Ozawa and Tilson Thomas , as well as more recent work by Yuri Siminov and Riccardo Chailly and most recently the fabulous performance by Teodor Currentzis and MusicAeterna. I agree about the flac files, this should be re-released for 16 bit (CD quality) or 24 bit download. I'd buy it in an instant!

Rick, I apologize for the delayed reply. This Rite of Spring is definitely one of my favorites. I am very surprised that it has not been professionally transferred to digital format. I am glad you enjoyed it.

One of greatest performances ever - something rather special happened the day that Bohdan Wodiczko and the Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra recorded this.

What an extraordinary performance! It is convincingly the most idiomatic performance that I know- truly something to cause a riot in the theater! Thank you for posting this.

@@wilhelmvargas4599 I had always listened to the '69 Boulez/Cleveland recording. Recently I had the urge to hear as many versions as I can, and by chance encountered this one. I was blown away, it felt like I was discovering the work again. As for now, it's my favorite! No other version can match its intensity.

Thank you for listening. If you go to Amazon UK, there is a CD being sold by Maestro Editions that features Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring by Bohdan Wodiczko. You may have to contact the seller, Richard Chlupaty, to inquire about purchase and delivery to the U.S. He was very accommodating. The transfer was done by someone who has much more talent than I do. I have the Maestro Editions CD as well, and it is terrific. I hope this helps.

Any chance you can provide a link with a the flac files? I learned to love this piece with this recording (a cassette around 1990)

Hi Wilhelm, thanks for posting this! Amazing to hear this otherworldly performance sounding cleaner!
I am hoping to use this recording in a new ballet - we are contacting the publisher and if they agree, would you be interested in us using your cleaned up version?
Because the recording is over 50 years old, it's possibly copyright free now, but we are contacting the label to be sure. Can you email me through my channel and I can supply more details... thanks!

I like the Sacrificial Dance, but it feels a bit too off-tempo compared to other recordings. While it's powerful, it feels disorienting; why should the 4/4 sections be at a faster tempo than the 2-3-5 sections?
I guess I'm just biased toward Bernstein '58, but I don't know. I do wonder which recording would be the best to send on an interstellar probe like the Voyager Golden Record (which carried Stravinsky '60's Sacrificial Dance aboard it).

Do you have the Segerstam recording with the ORF Symphony Orchestra?

    • @wilhelmvargas4599

Unfortunately, I do not. I have my eye on the Segerstam recording on Ebay. It is rather expensive right now. If I can get it at a lower price, I will definitely get it and post it.
