This is crazy! I’ve been on a joy division/new order kick lately. Just finished hooky’s book unknown pleasures (great read btw) and bought brotherhood and unknown pleasures on vinyl. Incredible band. Stephen Morris is a maniac on the skins!seriously one of my all time favorite bands (both). Hey Bernard and hooky bury the hatchet already!!!

I'm a massive New Order fan and have only ever seen the "bongo" portion of this interview. It was nice to finally see it within a broader context; it's funny and charming. Thanks for posting!

Vanishing Point is THE masterpiece of the album, and perhaps the best song they ever wrote. The epitome of pop music.

Good find!! Things just weren’t the same between Bernard and Hooky during / after the second stage of the North America tour later that year, and the rest as they say - is history.

Remember this interview when it came out and thought to myself "this band are only ever playing theatres or even clubs to around 1000 people, something's off, they don't play proper tours" .. and then Hooky said much later on that Barney hated touring and they could never get the touring thing going properly.

I always had the impression Hooky resented them not being U2 and not having that level of stardom. But he'd have fallen out with Bono long before he fell out with Barney.

  • @Dangerman5

Fascinating. They put all that money into a club and factory records for years instead of getting rich, no artist would dream of doing anything like that in today’s world. But then somewhat ironically years later they fall out over royalties lol. You could see the slight power dynamic between Peter and Bernard even then, Bernard wanting to get his words out a few times but having to wait for Peter to finish.

I’ll always have a soft spot for them, they were the first band I ever saw live in January ‘86 from round the “Low Life” era. Such a great band. BBC Northern Ireland filmed 2 songs from that gig - “Ceremony” and “Love will tear us apart”. The show it was shown on was called Channel One I think. Do you have that footage? The audio is up on RUclips but I’ve not seen the footage since the day it was broadcast.
    Thank you for this.
    Edit
The video on RUclips with the audio of that gig has disappeared unfortunately.

I'm sorry Edward, I do not have that show. I did ask an old tape trader friend in Belfast if he has it, but sadly no. He does remember it and told me there was an interview with Barney and Carol Keating, then two songs as you said, the interview, he thinks, was in the snack bar of the Queens hall. It's possible it still exists in the archives, but regional shows don't seem to have been archived as much as national shows.

I understand, thank you for having a look. I remember now the interview with Barney and the late Carol Keating. I should try and send BBC NI an email if possible and ask them to look in their archives. Maybe New Order themselves have a copy in their archives.
      Thank you once again.

I remember seeing this on the telly and being fascinated with the way the band spoke so openly and honestly.. but ultimately I thought that the music they made in n 1989 sounded a little dated, the sequencing and some of the key sounds sounded dated to my 16 year old ears - Pixies seemed so fresh amd appealed more to me in '89
