glad to make you laugh!!
What a great, simple, tip!
So simple and effective eh? Glad to help.
Goalie knee pads are not a bad way to shim space if you need it. Personally have Warrior Rituals and I love them. Added protection and comfort is great.
Have the same ones and I love them too
Great advice Maria! Good choice of pads as well. 😉😊
Thanks! I love them!
looking at adding to my knee stacks as well. old knee injury certainly seems to hamper my movement. One note about the toe ties... Try an elastic version, like Monster Goalie HAL straps or Brian's Smart Strap system. I really like them because they seem to cause less ankle stress and pull my pad back after getting up.
Great point!
Thank you for explaining that! next pad mod!
dontBEaSYNk You are welcome and I am glad you asked... just shot a new video on toe ties - stay tuned.
Thank you for the information. Could you also point to where the benefits are of a single or double break pad for a less flexible goalie? Thanks
Hi Ray - that is really out of my wheelhouse - I think it is probably more related to technique - but I really don't know about that at all, sorry :(
GoalieTrainingProTV thank you for responding. The thicker knee stack has been a huge help for me. I'm still looking for help closing my five hole when I'm down, but I just can't quite flare wide enough.
Make sure your pads fit properly too and that your toe tie isn't too tight
Just watched your warrior 2 year review, and love the idea of that shim. Any recommendations on what to use? No idea where to start looking
I just went into the local hockey shop and asked for a shim to add some height to my knee stack and the guy went into the back and came out with the ones I use.
What is the impact on the muscle to integrate a knee lift or stack, on the goalie pads ? does the psoas will work less ?, does the adductors will have to work more compare to the abductor will be less….could you expand on this, if it in your expertise…..thank you
I don’t know if you could say the psoas will work less - the Iliopsoas is the most active in hip flexion above 90 degrees relative to the torso, so the increased knee stack will not have a big impact on that - the Rectus femoris will have to work from a more advantageous position with a more knee lift.
I don’t think it will have much of an impact on the adductor vs abductor load.
Great information. My CCM 3.5 knee lifts are starting to frey at seams. New pad not option at this time. Could I replace new lift myself? Other options? Thanks and keep the videos coming.
hmmmm - not sure Dennis - I would probably ask at your local hockey shop and see what they think.
@@goalietraining thanks, I appreciate the information. Will take your Device.
@@denniscardoza3708 you are welcome
Being well versed in the biomechanics of goaltending, do you have video that might help new adult overweight goalies. I'm 54 and starting in September. I have been losing weight and am down to 225 with a goal of 200 @ 5'9. I subscribe to you and started the 2 week Butterfly Challenge thanks in advance. BTW the extra padding sounds like a good idea.
Losing the weight is the key - do increase the height of your knee stacks, but there isn't any training that will reduce the impact of dropping a mass from a given height. Sounds like you are well on your way to your goal - keep it up! The Butterfly Challenge will help your hip mobility, so that will definitely help you feel better out there.
Awesome video, I hadn't seen the Velcro-in knee stack risers. Those are awesome. Up to this point, I'd been telling my goalie's parents, cause they're usually buying this stuff, let's face it, but I'd been telling them to use volleyball knee pads in addition to their thigh guards. The low profile knee pads are about the same thickness, and also seem to keep the knee cover on the thigh guards in place for the younger guys with smaller knees. There's all kinds of those knee pads out there, I started using them when, my 40yr old Marine Corps abused knees, started swelling up, and haven't had that issue since. Raises up the knee in the same way, may also reduce the amount of stress on the fabric holding the knee stacks together. Also if they're using loaned pads, from their hockey association for example, if the pad isn't exactly the right size, and they have a chance of missing the stack, their knees aren't hitting ice. Obviously something you don't want to find out the hard way, especially if it's a not due to pad size but overly loose pad strapping. The newer flexible toe ties that a lot of pads have, and a overly loose strapping would also allow the knee to go above/below the knee stack and allow knee to ice contact to happen. So with the knee pads the knee is always protected and cushioned. Constant impacts on joints, especially as you get older, even with normal low goalie movements, is a lot of driving the knees straight down. Some former pro goaltenders I've talked to said their knees and hips were primary reasons for retirement. Thanks for doing these!
Yeah, all good stuff, I love my knee pads too :)
USA Hockey, does several goalie symposiums in the various regions, with a couple guys from MidAm, Dave Caruso, and Shane Clifford, these guys spearheaded a 3 lvl goalie coaching system, bronze, silver, and gold. The intent being to get more coaches who are not only hockey coaches but also knowledgeable goalie coaches out there, so the US could begin to produce well trained modern goaltenders similar to Finland, who has goalies as one of their main exports (kidding, sorta).
Point I should've gotten to, it would be great to get you as part of these symposiums as a Skype call to give a presentation and do some Q&A, as you're still the #1 source I send goalies/goalie coaches/goalie mom's, to, who want to improve their own performance, a goalies performance, etc. I know you're very busy and you do a LOT with USA Hockey already, and I am so very thankful for all you do, and honestly I've signed up for several online Q&A's you've done in the past, but every time, I ended up out of town for hockey games. The one thing I have made every effort to attend, even after reaching level 4 CEP wise, is the goalie symposiums just as a refresher, and to meet coaches of similar interests. Best POC I could offer is David Caruso for MidAm, as he's been my mentor and friend for years since I got into goalie coaching.
Again, you're amazing, your work is amazing, and it is greatly appreciated.
I had a similar mod done to my pads like 10 years ago. I believe the reason current pads don't have higher stacks is they conform to NHL rules, which minimizes the height of the pad stack. BTW, have the same pads, love them to death. I'm probably going to see if I can steal a wedge or two from my old ones and stuff them in like you did. . .
I think at the NHL level that is true, but at the level most of us play it is totally fine. I love the pads too - nice and light.
where could I a pair of shims up? Also, I just bought the Warrior ritual G4 pads, blocker and trapper. I've been using Brian;s forever. I used the warriors tonight for the first time. I felt lighter for sure, but I noticed my pads felt loose and the kept crossing over at the top, almost pinching each other and felt like they were impeding my performance. Any suggestions?
my pads always cross over at the top, I just have one in front and one in back - it does take some getting used to. I also went one size smaller and I think that helped. For the shims, I just went into my local hockey store and talked to one of the goalie guys about it - he went into the back and brought these ones out.
Hi - have you found a source for normative data or specific to goaltender requirement for internal rotation, or ideal amount of internal rotation to be able to accomplish a proper butterfly technique? Thanks!
There isn't normative data for goalies. Typically we have 90 degrees of combined IR/ER. Some people are biased toward IR, some are biased toward ER. But I have seen successful goalies with lots of IR and those with shockingly little - it is a matter of adapting your style to suit your body.
In the video you said Pete's sports. Are you referencing Pete's sports london?
Yes I am! The one and only.
Hi Maria, My son is 13 years old and 5’5” height. I got him a new set of pads senior 32 +1 he was using int. 29 +1. Should he still be using the bootstrap on the new pads? Thanks
great question, unfortunately sizing pads isn't my area of expertise at all. But I think whether he used the bootstrap or not is up to personal preference.
Where can I buy those little insert pads you got from Pete's?
I just went in to Pete's and described what I was looking for and the guy went into the back and brought these out. They weren't out on a rack or anything like that. Sorry, I know that isn't much help.
@@goalietraining right on lol. I'm sure I can fabricate something. Just wondering if they had a certain name or somewhere I could just order em ;)
@@jdogghizzy2606 I know it is sort of weird, but you could try doing the same - you never know what those guys have hanging around.
@@goalietraining maybe I will
wow literally the same pads I have, couldn't have worked out better for me lol! Thanks for the tips
That is awesome - - Warrior buddies :)
Glad to help.
This is a game changer! Thanks!
You are welcome Mac! Happy to help.
my 10 year old and I use the warrior knee pads under the CCM pads, what difference do you think it would be if we switched to the Warrior leg pad, ?and do you use Warriors knee pads with your leg pads?
Hi Dave - I think if your young goalie is comfortable with their current set up, then I would not mess with it at all. I like the Warrior pads because they are so light (yes, I do use the Warrior knee pads with my Warrior pads) and maybe when it is time for an upgrade, you might want to look at them as an option, but I don’t think I would change anything right now if they are comfortable with the current set up. It is not as though the Warrior knee pads are custom designed to mesh perfectly with the Warrior pads it is more just a knee pad with a pad. I hope that helps Dave.
The Warrior knee pads you can purchase are a big upgrade over the ones included with the pads.. But there is no rule saying if you use one brand for something that you must use it for everything.. Use whatever is available to you and feels good to you
Super helpful tip thanks!!
Do you have a link or specs of what you asked for? Trying to find an additional stack but having trouble. Same pads :)
No, I actually don't I literally just went into the local hockey shop and asked for a 'knee stack thing-y to give me more height' and the guy went in the back and brought these out. There is no tag or branding on them at all.
Thank you! I just got some Warrior pads a few days ago myself. While at the store with skates it felt fine.. but on the ice it feels like im falling out of the knee stacks.. very frustrating!
Are you sure they are the right size?
I am wondering the same now. I had 32 before twice before and was okay, then went to 33 eflex3 but felt it was too high, now back to Warrior 32 and having this issue. Im thinking the boot ankle maybe changed things up since the boot angle is more standart on Warrior compared to eflex/premier. Also normally i dont play with the boot strap on and I had it for the first run on Monday, thinking that also was a factor since it kept the pad locked to my skate and unmoving. Gonna play with it off tonight and hope that helps. Since I played in them dont think I can return them anymore
Yeah, I think some brands just fit proportionally differently. I had Vaughns but I could never get the knee stack in the right spot either.
@@NightWarp from what I've been told and from my limited experience with Warrior pads apparently they fit bigger than other brands .. I tried a 36 +1.5 and it was huge compared to my 36 Vaughns
I tried something like this. Only down side was I had to really focus on spreading my legs with each movement so my pads wouldn't continually smash together. The piece I used was 3/8 inch thick. Was a noticeably different feel definitely a loss and gain to this, depends if you get used to it, I ended up taking them out.
I feel that when I walk, but not at all on the ice.
It's probably something about the setup I have that's the issue or would take time to feel right, knee risers for v6 2000's. You posting this does make me curious to try it again. Thanks for the awesome content.
You are welcome
Just thinking out loud - raising the knee cradle is an interesting idea I will think about. However, if there is sufficient length in the toe ties so that the skates move to the ice when moving to the butterfly I wonder how the toe could be higher than the knee with a standard knee cradle.
Assuming different pads have different heights for knee stacks plus cowling on the skate could have an impact - great question.
What are these pads called and where can I get them? Anyone ?
I literally just went into the local hockey shop and asked if they had an of those inserts to make my knee stacks a little higher. The guy went into the back and came out with these. But I know others have mentioned "official" ones from pad manufacturers... hope that helps.
Do you use knee pads?
Yes I do.
Would this put any extra pressure to the knees? My hips are stronger than my knees, so I don't want to add any additional stress to my knees if possible.
No - - it takes stress off your knees, that is part of the point
hmmm... im just realizing my landing pad is way way way too small... no wonder im having trouble going into the butterfly
Glad to help
