I hate it when influencers will bash a product because the active ingredients are towards the bottom of the ingredient list without taking into consideration that some ingredients can be dangerous at higher concentrations.
It’s always a red flag when an influencer talks about the formulations instead of talking about their experiences with the products. These influencers don’t know how product formulations work, so they only think that if the active ingredients are low, the product is bad.

The Inkey List Niacinamide was very very bad for me! I got more acne, and it didn't stop until I quit the Niacinamide. I was baffled because everyone was raving about it. Now I understand, you explained it so well. Thank you!
I discovered that niacinamide breaks me out. My skin is doing much better since I removed any product that contain niacinamide from my routine (cleansers, moisturizers etc.). And I’m pretty convinced after the intense acne breakouts I experienced for the last 6months, only thing that worked for me was keeping niacinamide away from my bathroom vanity. Everyone says it’s good for acne, I wonder why it hated my skin and attacked me 🤷🏻♀️
@@Liteweaver301 I experienced irritation and broke out in little whiteheads all over my face from TO's niacinamide serum! I've heard similar experiences from others... I suspect it's the concentration, though maybe something else in the formulation. I've used products with lower percentages of niacinamide (like some Cerave cleansers and moisturizers, as well as some CosRX products) with zero adverse side effects.
It irritates my skin badly. I am tretinoin user and niacinamide, even in small amounts, burning my face badly. I tried different products with the same result.
@@Liteweaver301 Honestly anything with niacinamide. Cerave Foaming cleanser broke me out, TO Niacinamide 10%, Good molecules discoloration serum, Facetheory Exaglow serum, Drmtlgy tinted sunscreen... Anything with niacinamide. Now my routine is Vanicream cleanser, Vanicream Hyaluronic acid moisturizer (night), FAB ultra repair (morning), retinoid and Neutrogena Liquid sensitive skin face sunscreen and finally I'm acne free.
I recently discovered I hav an allergy to niacinimide since it’s literally in everything from my gentle cleanser to my sunscreen to my makeup. I’ve had to take it out completely. I wish companies wouldn’t go so crazy over these hype ingredients, because like you said too much of a good thing is no longer good. Thanks for the education!
This taught me so much!! I actually use The Ordinary niacinamide and I have seen positive results on my skin. My skin texture is very smooth and I have definitely noticed I wake up with little to no oil anymore! Thank you for this amazing knowledge Dr. Idriss! Always a pleasure!
"less is more" the lesson that those ones with sensitive skin know pretty well. I like the niacinamide idea, but i personally don't buy a specific niacinamide one, i buy within moisturizer, la roche posey has many moisturizer with that. Excellent video doctor 🤗🤗🤗
I used LaRosh Posay Niacinamide 10% - it didn’t suit me…so I guess less is better in this case. Glad you’re doing these videos otherwise bloggers would ruin our skin if we only followed their advice !
The ordinary niacinamide destroyed my skin. I found out that in way lower concentrations niacinamide is best for me, I use COSRX Galactomyces 95 tone balancing essence, which has niacinamide 2% and is probably my favourite skincare product. I don’t know if that’s a too low concentration to actually make improvements but I do feel my skin better when I use it. Side note, as a Libra I loved that reference 💜
Probably why i have an acne right now as i use galactomyces filterate and have recently started using purito fermented 94 essence with 2 % niacinamide in it ! Its probably excessive niacinamide
Hi Dr Shereene Idriss! I just wanted to say you're an excellent teacher and role-model. I'm in my final year of medical school and in the process of thinking about my future career. You definitely have sparked an interest in myself to look into dermatology! It's so much more interesting when being taught by a person such as yourself. I also watched your video about the difficulties in your career and overcoming them and it was very inspiring.
@@shereeneidriss personally I'm a fan of cursing, it speaks to me as a person, so don't feel too much pressure. But also best of luck with kicking the habit if that's what you really want 😊
Legumes in French are vegetables. Legumes in English are things like beans and lentils and peanuts (pretty much anything that grows in a pod). Just wanted to correct that.
This is the reason why you should visit a derm or listen to one instead of taking beauty advise from celebrities and other beauty youtubers. I thought I was using niacinamide for the first time after getting a niacinamide serum. I realised today that I have been using nicotinamide waaaaaaaay before this whole niacinamide game took to light. P.S nicotinamide is alot cheaper than niacinamide serums.. like literally 10 times less! It's prescription strength though
MORE IS NOT MORE... thank you. My past self needed to hear this. Sitting here with major dermititis and then I realized that 4 out if the 5 products I use on a daily basis have niacinamide as the second or third ingredient. I read all my ingredients and did not think niacinamide would cause such a reaction!
I've tried niacinamide (I have oily skin so of course I've heard of it) it makes my face tingle like I've put a glycolic acid on it and eventually break out. Very validating to know this is something that can happen at higher percentages.
@@shereeneidriss Azelaic acid is the best ingredient I have ever discovered for acne (which I've struggled with for 20 years)! I would LOVE to watch a Let's Get Intimate on this ingredient (whether more is better etc.) Thanks for your wonderful videos!

The Ordinary Niacinimide has done wonders to my skin though. It has improved so much that many people noticed, complimented and started asking what do I use. @@GrooveYT I've yet to see any improvements on my skin :( I'm using niacinamide in the morning and azelaic acid at night, both of which have supposedly done miracles for some people. I re-apply sunscreen religiously too.
I use the Ordinary Niacinamide 10% . I have a lot of brown spots on my skin as well as a bit of melasma. I have used Niacinamide for the past month yet haven’t seen much change on my face. I also use the Ordinary Hyaluronic acid along with Niacinamide and sometimes Hemi squalene oil on top of it. My rosacea has more or less disappeared but the brown spots are still there..
i was going to say the same and I was hoping she would mention it, I'm in my second one (the first lasted me like 3 months using it everyday!) and I noticed less pimples and acne in general and is not that expensive.
Thank you because I was using The Ordinary Nicacinamide and it just f* my skin up. I had more blemishes and more inflammations and I didn't know why because every skincare gurus on youtube were raving about it.
TO Niacinamide was the worst for me. I swear that it damaged my moisture barrier. I got these little sores and peeling skin. And even after I stopped using it? I still had some sort of acne-like problem (which only disappeared after a few months of a super gentle, fungal acne safe routine).
@@leonamay8776 OMG i thought only me have it. I use Ninacinamide of TO and it ALWAYS creates white cast on my skin, after 30 mins it gets to sthing falling out of my face, like a have something stick to my skin and it destroyes other layers. YKWIM :
Ok so... y'all buggin. TO's niacinimide worked wonders for me because i didnt slather my face with that stuff. I legit used one goddamn drop on my face, with one goddamn drop of their hyaluronic acid and a good amount of water to mix it altogether to help with dilution and spreadability. Then i sealed that shit with moisturiser because you need to be responsible with your juiced-up humectants. This was a fantastic product for an oily girl like me because it stopped my from being an oil slick in the summer. It's not wholly the product's fault it didn't work for you because it was unsuitable for your skin or you didn't figure out to use it properly to suit you with sufficient trial and error. TO's products don't really exist to hold your hand so you're probably better off without it.
I really dislike how much the big skincare youtubers hype niacinamide up as if it's the end all be all for everyone with no regard to the fact that it is literally in most products today and more and more people are developing bad reactions to it, especially with products like the 10% niacinamide serum. My mom literally can't use even the gentlest cleanser that has a bit of it inside, her face gets all read and hot.
This is very helpful and I had certainly fallen into the trap of reading niaciname is good for calming the skin, sensitive skin and rebuilding skin barrier, then buying the 10% serum and definitely being irritating and drying. Wish there were more options at low % and the high % ones banned!
I'm so happy niacinamide is having it's moment, bc otherwise I might have never heard of it and it's AMAZING on my very sensitive skin. Also apparently we're both libras, that's a plus
The "more is not more," makes total sense. I recently purchased a CeraVe lotion for the first time. I didn't realize it was lotion because I bought it online. I have super dry skin so I need creams and ointments. The lotion wasn't enough so I just kept reapplying it every time I went into the bathroom. After 24 hour my skin felt like fine sand paper. I stopped using it, but a week later I tried it again, just 2x a day. Now my skin is so soft and smooth. I cover it with Alboline to hold in the moisture, but it has improved my skin so much!
Yet they, label the lotion for normal to dry skin in the US, and worse dry to very dry skin in the UK. I have combination oily skin and even I can layer it up and stay matte 😂
Thank you for explaining skincare in a way I can understand. I love that you are a skin geek, but I understand what you are explaining. Thank you for dumming it down without talking down.
I gave The Ordinary serum few tries, but I have similar feelings to Shereene. Feels a bit too heavy for my combination, acne prone skin... Now I prefer to look for Niacinamide in my moisturizers (where this ingredient is usually just a "supporting" ingredient, not always even highlighted). My favorite ones are CosRX "AC Collection Lightweight Soothing Moisturizer" or iUNIK "Centella Calming Gel Cream".
Could you do a new skincare order for those who want to add niacinamide, azeliac acid, aha/bha peels, & retinols. Love all of your videos on youtube and instagram!
Since I started using skincare, I never think that higher is better. But The Ordinary's Niacinamide 10% & Zinc 1% works just fine 👌🏽 I use almost everything I need from TO (except my OTC 0.1% tretinoin), and some from 1 Korean brand. So far, couldn't be happier.
As I watch more and more of your videos, the more I feel like this is necessary information for when I was growing up with HORRIBLE acne...I got acne advice from my dad...which, nothing against him, has rhino skin that can pretty much take anything. Idk how long I used those astringent pads with horrible stinging that didn’t help that he used as a kid...went through the proactive phase with no joy. I’m almost 30, and I feel with your help and guidance, I’ve made more informed decisions about my skin that I wish I knew sooo much sooner...thank you so much for these! Minimizing my routine, and “more is not more” have helped a ton just on their own. Ugh, could’ve saved myself years of self consciousness lol
I bought the ordinary 10 % niacinamide to get rid of my acne scars but insteae it made my skin purge overnight😭😭😭 i regert it so much. Had i known earlier i would have bought the 5 % one. Damn you hyram Update: THE PIMPLES ARE GONE AND THE ORDINARY PRODUCT IS ACTUALLY VERY GOOD, I DONT REGRET BUYING IT AT ALL NOW. thank yoi hyram
Niacinamide saved my skin. I have oily, red, acne prone skin. I use a serum after my green tea toner in the AM. Once it dries I go in with heaps of sunscreen. No moisturizer in the AM for me, my sunscreen is enough.
Gahhhh I seriously love and trust your perspective regarding ingredients. You explain everything well. So logical and balanced. If you come out with your own skincare line, I'm so excited to buy your non-hyaluronic acid containing products!
I have recently started using a 10% serum & notice a difference already. I've been using creams that contain 2%-5%. The 10% works faster, esp. on dark circles under eyes.
I love the purito Niacinamide and galactomyces serum. The % of Niacinamide is 5% which my skin LOVES and the galactomyces is 92% and does pretty much all the same things niacinamide does. So you get a double whammy but without just increasing the niacinamide to the point where it's irritating or even inefficient.
I've been using TO Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% for the past year or so and haven't noticed any kind of irritation (and on the contrary I feel like it's helped my skin a lot) - would it be okay to keep using this product if I'm not having any kind of adverse effects? I usually use it once a day. Thanks :)
Would love to get an expert opinion on this as well. Have been using the same product for a year, my skin has improved so much - brighter, smoother, less redness. No irritation, cystic acne I usually get before my period gone, and when I do get the occasional pimple it's small and goes away fast. Before this product I used a moisturizer from La Roche Posay with niacinamide (don't know which %) and it did nothing for me (and I used it for over a year). For reference, I have dry skin with a very oily nose and slightly oily forehead, redness on my cheeks, and when I use products that my skin doesn't like it gets super oily and I break out and I look like a hot mess.
me too!! i've been using the ordinary's 10% for more than a year and it's the only thing that helps my oily, acne prone skin... when i stopped using it i started getting my usual whiteheads and breakouts again
Products with niacinamide worked for me. It lightened my blemishes and never broke me out. Just find the products that will work for your skin. I have oily and sensitive skin. It’s always a trial and error when it comes to finding the perfect skin care products.
I'm listening to that part over and over and I swear she says "Niacinamide hirED the most expensive PR agent" Not Hyram is the most expensive haha but I get it, Hyram on the brain always
Thank you for sharing your knowledge in such an accessible way. When you come back to sunscreens could you talk about melanin and what darker skinned people do and don't need?
I looove Dr. Idriss, I value her opinion and for educating us about skin care. But if you want to know more about taking care of skin of color, you need to see two of my favorite as well, they expert when it comes to skin of color. Dr. Alexis Stephens. She's dermatologist/ cosmetic chemist and Dr. Vanita Rattan, she's a doctor and cosmetic formulator specifically for skin of color.
I followed you advice on baby bum cream to soothe and my skin has transformed from a sensitive sore organ, to strong and less demanding of moisture. I followed your advice on retinol and at 39 I have less wrinkles than 30. And learning how to accept with grace my incoming jowels. Also sunscreen, thank you for motivating me to be consistent, my skin is so much clearer all the way. No you're not weird dr. You are just good at explaining stuff. You should have been a professor or something. I didn't finish the video because I'm not interested in niacinamide. But the products I use mostly have niacinamide already.
I love the chef analogy! Salt is the best friend of flavor. But are we gonna sit there & eat a bowl of salt? I sure hope not!!! Edit - I have quite resilient skin. I can handle most strong actives, no problem. But The Ordinary 10% niacinamide wrecked me. My skin was so incredibly sensitive that even the most basic, gentle moisturizer I have burned my skin like it was acid. It took a couple weeks for my skin to recover. No ma’am
Thanks for this! Can't wait to hear about your all-in-one recommendations. Totally agree on HA being in everything and it being too much, needs to stop.

Niacinamide didnt work on my skin. I am trying to compensate my damage and acne prone skin with retiniod and vaseline.. I really love your videos. Keep motivating and educating.
I love your use of the spilled product! When I get free samples of things I know my face will hate (rosacea), I use them on my body. My hands get to experience a lot of great rejects.
For me niacinamide is like Windex from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" - I find it helps me heal so many things with my skin. And, I am a Libra...and, I love you, Dr. Idriss...and, I agree more is not more, less is more, but I tolerate The Ordinary's niacinamide extremely well.

Why not. Anyone can read a study and tell you the conclusion especially from a science background

They don't understand formulation, uneducated in chemistry yet they are speaking with authority. Don't bother watching them, a complete waste of time.

Everyone says it’s good for acne, I wonder why it hated my skin and attacked me 🤷🏻♀️
Same!!! What product did you use? I had this problem with the ordinary niacinamide.
@@Liteweaver301 I experienced irritation and broke out in little whiteheads all over my face from TO's niacinamide serum! I've heard similar experiences from others... The ordinary niacinamide destroyed my skin. I found out that in way lower concentrations niacinamide is best for me, I use COSRX Galactomyces 95 tone balancing essence, which has niacinamide 2% and is probably my favourite skincare product. Niacinamide has been in my skincare for 2 decades now and it really did just BLOW up.
so you didnot get any benefits?
This is the reason why you should visit a derm or listen to one instead of taking beauty advise from celebrities and other beauty youtubers. I thought I was using niacinamide for the first time after getting a niacinamide serum. I realised today that I have been using nicotinamide waaaaaaaay before this whole niacinamide game took to light. P.S nicotinamide is alot cheaper than niacinamide serums.. like literally 10 times less! It's prescription strength though
Could you please give nicotinamide recommendations?
MORE IS NOT MORE... thank you. My past self needed to hear this. Sitting here with major dermititis and then I realized that 4 out if the 5 products I use on a daily basis have niacinamide as the second or third ingredient. I read all my ingredients and did not think niacinamide would cause such a reaction!
Yes! Same! I was thinking I must have a gluten allergy, eczema or even psoriasis on my face. Turns out it was niacinamide.
As skin care enthusiast (with no derma background) I love this Videos ... Very mind blowing and straight forward ...
I've tried niacinamide (I have oily skin so of course I've heard of it) it makes my face tingle like I've put a glycolic acid on it and eventually break out. Very validating to know this is something that can happen at higher percentages.
The next "buzz" ingredient seems to be Azelaic acid, which has also been around for a while I think?
I’ve been hearing it come up more too
Yes! Totally agree.
I use for a month and barely do anything with my hyperpigmentation. Was my old dermatologist who told me to use it.
@@shereeneidriss Azelaic acid is the best ingredient I have ever discovered for acne (which I've struggled with for 20 years)! TO Niacinamide was the worst for me.
I swear that it damaged my moisture barrier. I got these little sores and peeling skin. And even after I stopped using it? I still had some sort of acne-like problem (which only disappeared after a few months of a super gentle, fungal acne safe routine).
@@leonamay8776 Yeah I started to get those little white bumps and it took half a year to get rid of it! It was terrible.
@@leonamay8776 OMG i thought only me have it. I use Ninacinamide of TO and it ALWAYS creates white cast on my skin, after 30 mins it gets to sthing falling out of my face, like a have something stick to my skin and it destroyes other layers. YKWIM :
I had the same thing happened until I switched brands to Eva naturals (natural Ingredients). It cleared my skin and clarified my pores in a week.
Ok so... y'all buggin.
Agreed
Me too :( my face got burned and itchy 😫
This is very helpful and I had certainly fallen into the trap of reading niaciname is good for calming the skin, sensitive skin and rebuilding skin barrier, then buying the 10% serum and definitely being irritating and drying. Wish there were more options at low % and the high % ones banned!
I'm so happy niacinamide is having it's moment, bc otherwise I might have never heard of it and it's AMAZING on my very sensitive skin. Also apparently we're both libras, that's a plus
I literally just started using it fir about a week from The Ordinary. It's fantastic fantastic....🙏
MORE IS NOT MOREE - i chant to myself while watching this
I gave The Ordinary serum few tries, but I have similar feelings to Shereene.
I love binging on your videos. Finally someone being honest and talking science based! ❤️
Could you do a new skincare order for those who want to add niacinamide, azeliac acid, aha/bha peels, & retinols. Love all of your videos on youtube and instagram!
Thinking about the same. I think I will do serums under cream and retinol at the end.
Since I started using skincare, I never think that higher is better. But The Ordinary's Niacinamide 10% & Zinc 1% works just fine 👌🏽
I use almost everything I need from TO (except my OTC 0.1% tretinoin), and some from 1 Korean brand.
I use the same combination and it works great for my rosacea. It's amazing.

I’m also curious about this. I’m using the same concentration for mild acne and post acne marks and it’s really niceeeee
me too!! i've been using the ordinary's 10% for more than a year and it's the only thing that helps my oily, acne prone skin... when i stopped using it i started getting my usual whiteheads and breakouts again
