    Loved the video! I would make formulated guess that this is a fake for a few reasons.
    1. the quality on the yoshi render is too smooth. Often times prerendered 3d images get very pixely when theyre converted to GBA.
    2. A tech demo would be too news worthy to make exclusive to some websites forum. Making a mock up (which seems very plausible for an amature at IGN to do based on the image) seems better suited for a forum discussion.
    3. No other gaming news sites had this image? No one thought to run this piece as legitimate news instead of a forum promotion for IGN? It all just doesnt add up

      I don't see why pre-rendered 3D images would be "pixely" on the GBA. The only reason something would be pixely on the GBA is if affine transformation is being used to scale up the object or background - if done on a background then it would mean Mode 1 or Mode 2 is being used (which imposes a lot of additional limitations).
      Yoshi could just be a background layer itself, set to be above all the sprites - set in 256 colour mode.
      I think your 2nd and 3rd points are the ones to think about, you raise some good questions there.

      There is also the fact that this would have much better show of the GBA's power than Yoshi's Story so why would It get less coverage? Also how is there only one screen shot?

      Like they said in the article, it was only GBA sized so they assumed it was GBA game. Judging from just what the image looks like though I'm doubtful that was a part of any real game play. Maybe a in game screen for a news article at least but no way there was genuine gameplay there.

      +Xilefian The Game Boy Advance is 32-bit and that image is probably Nintendo DS quality and the average GBA game is even then 16-bit, so that image would be too high quality for the GBA.

      I’m also confused by the image. It doesn’t look like the screenshot is the right resolution for a GBA game, and The trees look like 3D models with N64-like texture filtering/anti-aliasing. Meanwhile the HUD text in the top left has these really chunky pixels that don’t match the rest of the image.

    As a Nintendo and Beta Content enthusiast, I'm surprised. I *NEVER* saw that screenshot before!
    Well, it COULD be a mock up, but there are some really weird things that indicate that it MIGHT be real.
    1) First, there ARE fully 3D GBA games. They are rare and far between, but they exist.
    The problem is, they're not this detailed or smooth. So, it could be that they are pre-rendered sprites.
    2) The HUD certainly does have a GBA feel on it. The pixels are stretched, which suggests they're upscaled or have some kind of rotation or stretching effect. A lot of early GBA games had this, especially to showcase it's power.
    3) The trees DO look like pre-rendered sprites. I can even imagine them coming towards the screen like in Mario Kart Super Circuit.
    4) The character design is pretty weird, I must say. It might look fan-made. But we need to remember that 2000/2001 was a weird era for Nintendo. Almost every game they made in this era had different art styles and character designs were almost never consistent. Yoshi's tail and saddle look very different, but it might be an artistic choice. He has 4 spikes on his head too.
    But if you remember, Super Smash Bros. Melee also had a Yoshi with 4 spikes AND with a stretched saddle and long tail.
    This is from around the same time, and if you stop to think about it, it could have influenced Yoshi's design in Melee, which itself was based on his Yoshi's Island design. Purple Yoshi uses orange shoes nowadays, but if you look closely at 90s artwork, you'll see some changes. Yoshi's Island artwork shows Purple Yoshi with pink shoes, but they're orange in-game. (They're pink In the GBA port, however)
    Purple Yoshi was also supposed to appear in Yoshi's Story. They made him wear pink shoes in the artwork, but in-game footage showed him with yellow shoes. In the end he was cut from the final version of the game. Paper Mario 64 also had purple Yoshis and they used pink shoes as well. It looks like Purple Yoshi didn't had a definitive design in that time, so have him wearing green shoes ISN'T as strange as it should be, but he still used PINK shoes most of the time.
    5) My biggest problem with the image: Yoshi's model looks TOO SMOOTH to be a pre-rendered sprite.
    And there's no way a GBA could render such a detailed 3D model in-game. Also, these spider-like enemies look very odd.
    Even if this is a mockup (which has a high probability of being), I'm still very intrigued and I hope we can find a answer to this mystery.

    • @Jonen560ti
      @Jonen560ti 6 лет назад +17

      Chances are pretty large that it's just a cgi mockup. Kind of like that first battle revolution trailer. Simply meant to convey the concept of a game that is currently in the design phase.

    • @brentdamage1520
      @brentdamage1520 6 лет назад +17

      The Yoshi in that image is most certainly a pre-rendered image and not an actual Gameboy Advance game. Nintendo used Softimage 3D and Softimage XSI for rendering images such as Super Mario 64 box art along with concept art from ~1990 to 2001. Based on the date of this article, I believe that this pre-rendered image appears to be rendered in Softimage XSI which was Nintendo's current rendering software at the time. Some of the sprites such as the trees and spider-like enemies appear 2D, but under every sprite is a shadow. These sprites appear to be 2D objects placed on a 3D scene. The texture along the ground appears to be fairly high resolution in order to fit the landscape. This leads me to the conclusion that this image was most likely rendered by Nintendo's art team. I believe that this image was a side-project of Nintendo's art team as concept art for a game idea. But was never released for some reason. I think this image was sent to IGN by an employee within the art team.

    • @Remour
      @Remour 6 лет назад +6

      From what I'm assuming, I believe that they used the pc development version to take a high quality screenshot of the game, along with all the stretched hud, this is 2000 we are talking about, it was rare to come by people online who created 3d models, and to spend all that time to create a 3d yoshi model is just too unrealistic.

    • @springchickena1
      @springchickena1 6 лет назад +4

      not 3d models, just sprites. this is likely a demo for devs that they received with their gba kit

    I don't know man it looks fake, Yoshi's tail looks a little fat, the saddle is too wide, and Yoshi (plus the trees and enemies) has shadows (even his tongue?!)? On the gba? I don't think so. Also, the font for the timer looks a little pixelated while Yoshi and the enemies look higher quality. It's a great mockup imo. It definitely could've fooled me as a Nintendo 64 title if the timer was higher quality. Great video Lloyd, it was super entertaining as always!

      The design could be that this was a demo developed by a Nintendo partner rather than internally. Going off that, it could be a pitch based on what the partner understood the hardware to be which could account for the lack of aliasing.

    • @Xilefian
      @Xilefian 6 лет назад +12

      The shadow can easily be part of the sprite itself, pre-rendered (or is another sprite on the layer below Yoshi).
      I think the more suspicious thing to look at is how high-resolution those tree sprites are. It's difficult to tell, due to the JPEG compression artifacts, but those are some pretty darn large objects for the GBA to handle. Still, I can see it being possible, just a wasteful use of sprites.
      If all the memory is dedicated to the tree sprites and enemy sprites then I can imagine the TIME graphic being lower resolution, scaled up to 2x as an affine-transformed sprite object - so more graphics memory can be dedicated to those ridiculously large trees and enemies.
      EDIT: Actually the Yoshi sprite itself could also be a background layer, rather than a sprite object. Graphics Mode 1 on the GBA would allow for this possibility. That status bar on the lower left would probably also be part of the same background layer as Yoshi.
      EDIT2: The ground may not even be an affine perspective background, could just be an vertically stretched HBLANK background - in which case, Mode 0 could also be used to achieve this game on the GBA. It's the size of those scaled sprites (trees + enemies) that makes me raise an eyebrow more than anything.

    Hey LSuperSonicQ, I've got a topic for you. Back in 2000, there was a pokemon game released to go along with the "Pokemon 2000" movie released that summer. This game was called "Pokemon the movie 2000 adventure", and was a 3d in-browser pokemon game where you could catch pokemon and build your team. Not much is known about this game, as it was available for only 4 weeks; or so i've found. There is little screenshots, and they are all pixelated. This game ran in the 'cyberworld' engine and likely didn't get much popularity. It's an interesting topic as we never saw 3d pokemon games outside of stadium at the time. I would love to see ideas covered on this. I did some detective work about the game over at the lost media forums.

    • @thetechconspiracy2

      TruelyJohn64 Yoshi and the enemies could have been prerendered sprites, with the enemies scaling in relation to their distance from the "camera", with the floor being the only 3D element. That would definitely make it easier to render, and tricks like this have been used since at least the NES.

      The only thing with that is that the design of Purple Yoshi in that image greatly resembles what Yoshi used to look like for most of the SNES era. Sure, it'd be weird to go back to that design as Yoshi's design had changed since then, but it's not out of the question. Then again, Purple Yoshi's shoes shouldn't be green...

    Because of the amount of colors that the Yoshi sprite has and how big this sprite is, I'd have to say that it's a mockup.
    And if you don't count that, just look at the background. The trees have too much color, the path is too high-res and because the game would have to move forward and stuff, the scaling would just not look as good as it does if it'd be real. Scaling often looks a bit off or uneven so if it looks that clear, it's either 1) a perfectly timed screenshot where everything is perfectly scaled 1:1 or 2) it's a mockup. And I think it being a mockup is much more likely than it being a perfect screenshot (why'd you make it look like a perfect screenshot if it was never intended to be shown publicly?).
    Oh! And the shadow of Yoshi! It shows that he sticks his tongue out in the direction where... his tongue goes. But that'd mean it'd have to either calculate to draw a line to the enemy or it has a preset of shadows it could display. But because this looks, again, too perfect to be real, I'm 100% certain that it's a mockup.

    • @UltimatePerfection
      @UltimatePerfection 6 лет назад

      A Blob GBA had a bitmap mode where every pixel could be accessed individually (just like on a computer), you know. That's how GBA video carts worked. It could be using that mode and that would explain the colors.

    • @ABlob
      @ABlob 6 лет назад +1

      But it'd have to had been interactive. And it'd still have to layer the trees, enemies and the ground.
      So you'd had to have 1) the Hud, 2) Yoshi, 3) enemies before trees?, 4) trees, 5) enemies behind trees... 7) the ground(?).
      And *apparently* bitmap mode would restrict you to 256 colors and no scaling. So that'd maybe excuse Yoshi but not so much the enemies or trees.
      And the source sounds like it was either a fan who made the mock-up or the submitter made a mock-up.

    The thing about this that makes me think it's real is that is not Yoshi, but a purple Yoshi from behind. I feel like a mock-up would want to garner as much attention as possible by having a clear, widely-recognizable image of Yoshi, which would mean the normal green Yoshi from the front or side. Not a weird color from the back.

  • @jaded151
    @jaded151 6 лет назад +45

    This has to be a mock up. Yoshi Looks super off model. His saddle is not on properly. And if its a tech demo why would they make yoshi purple? Even if it was just a option Why put it there? The press was not going to see it. Also it looks way too high quality to be from the gba
    EDIT:After some research i found out that purple yoshi's where red shoes not green shoes,

    • @Nitroxity
      @Nitroxity 6 лет назад +12

      Again though, this design of Yoshi pretty much would look like what a 3D render of Yoshi would look like in the SNES era. In fact, look at some official render artwork from his appearence in Mario RPG, the body shapes are pretty similar. Don't know what's up with the shoes though.

    • @ABlob
      @ABlob 6 лет назад +9

      Doesn't even matter how he looks off-model, his sprite has too much color and is really big which doesn't normally seem possible. And if it's a bunch of sprites, it'd take up more processing for the GBA to display the trees, the HUD, the enemies and the shadow.
      And the shadow kinda tells me it's fake because 1) why would anything internal look this "good", 2) the shadow follows everything Yoshi does, including sticking out his tongue which would mean the game would need to draw a line from that Yoshi shadow to the enemy and that'd probably be too much detail to put into something that was never intended to be shown, 3) that'd mean more sprites.
      The scaling also looks too perfect to be... actually scaling. Normally scaling looks a bit off and rough, not 1:1 to the actual sprite size. I doubt this was perfectly timed to not look off. Why time a screenshot this perfect for something internal that's never meant to be shown off to the public?

    • @jaded151
      @jaded151 6 лет назад +1

      Nitroxity First off the snes area yoshi saddle was different second of all why would the yoshi be purple? The only explanation was that the magazine who made this image was trying to make it look different so they would not get sued by nintendo .
      Also i was wrong about purple yoshi shoe color. they wear pink but this image still has the wrong shoe color

    • @Xilefian
      @Xilefian 6 лет назад +6

      I've written this in more detail in another comment thread, but those shadows can very easily be baked into the image data for the Yoshi - so the tongue following the Yoshi would certainly not be that big of a deal. Yoshi could also be a background layer, rather than a sprite object, so Yoshi wouldn't take up any extra sprites that could be dedicated to those high-resolution trees.
      It's those high-resolution trees that make me the most suspicious (as you said, normally scaling looks a bit off and rough). The horizontal could be mirroring, but it looks like the vertical resolution is taller than the GBA resolution (could just be JPEG compression making it look less pixellated, though). It would definitely require a lot of affine transformed sprite objects to get the entire tree rendered.
      I can imagine it being possible, but not a good use of the GBA's graphics memory. Would make a good tech-demo, indeed.

    Three things that scream fake:
    1. Looks like the UI was a copy+paste job, based on: both numbers are "25", but one is not anti-aliased and one is anti-aliased. Why would they also leave the not anti-aliased the way it is in a demo? A demo is supposed to impress. It also really, REALLY takes away from point 2.
    2. Yoshi's shading is super smooth. Too smooth. This does not look like native GBA resolution. I challenge you to recreate that amount of smooth shading in GBA resolution within the size of yoshi.
    3. This point is what really drives in home: the enemies cannot be pre-rendered. Why? Look at the targeted bug. The yellow tree is casting a shadow onto it. This entire scene is just a rendered image.

    Although everyone is saying its fake, i think its just a mock-up, but i wont disagree its fake, because i do believe it, but i believe its a mock up more.
    Reasoning why is because IGNpocket said they got the image from a Japanese affiliate, so thats why i believe its a mock up.
    But if its suppose to be a "real game" then i don't believe that at all. First-
    1- why isnt their more images? This point is not that strong since other games came out with 1 image too, but it was rare, and these being blog sites, i would think they would have 2-3 images if possible
    2- why werent more articles made? And why wasn't this more well known? Its a Yoshi game, one of the Mario Franchises main characters, i would think they would have more articles and more people knowing about it if it was a real Nintendo game.
    3- why wasnt this shown at E3 or any other public conferences? Those graphics are really high quality for the GBA, i would think they would be telling all the outlets about how they have these new graphics for the GBA.
    4- the game looks like 3D Models were used. As far as i know, the GBA could not support 3D models, and if they could, they couldn't have them so smooth on a GBA. I think it looks more like a Game Cube screenshot than a GBA one! The Gamecube could support graphics as good as those! Look at Luigi's Mansion, it looks as good as Luigi's Mansion in quality and lighting! But this isnt about game cube, its about the GBA.
    5- How do we not have any other info? With the Yoshi's Story for the GBA, that was found asap and dumped online, why werent there any eludes from Myamoto or any other worker there? They use to hint at upcoming games in interviews, so why did they say nothing about a game similar to this caliber?
    Either way, there is no way that its a real game for the GBA, its either a fake or a mock up, but not a real game.

    While it might be fun to pretend it's real - it's fake. The N64, let alone the GBA, can't run a game with that many polygons, or alternatively, a pre-rendered sprite at such a high resolution. GameCube maybe. Just have a Google for yourself, of what 3D Gameboy Advance games looked like. People were pushing that thing pretty hard, and couldn't get something more high fidelity than Duke Nukem style graphics.

  • @jacobalexharold

    From the looks of the image, I'm assuming that is was a mockup for a GBA remake of the pretty obscure Nintendo game "Yoshi's Safari", which is a first-person "shooter" in which Yoshi uses his tongue in place for an actual gun.

    @Hezkore 6 лет назад +1

    I can grantee you that it's a mock-up.

    I'm going to say it is likely a mockup. The other possibility is that the game makes us of pre-rendered sprites and the multiple layers features of the GBA--with that set of graphics being "developer Graphics" and not meant to resemble anything the finish project would ever have as part of it.
    That MIGHT explain the issues with Yoshi being off model--if they just quickly rendered some 3D Yoshi to run through a gallery style game of sorts.
    Chances are such a game did not go any further than that--as Nintendo generally prefers their characters do not get represented in the Developers Graphics stage of thing--and are only put in after it is determined the game is playable.
    So... even if there was a playable demo around it--it would have been such an early stage of development, that it is barely beyond a mockup, and Nintendo would have said no to it actually going further.
    As the GBA cannot render 3d like that... but it does have multiple layers, and a mixture of prerendered sprites and a term called "Hardware Sprites" could be used to explain how they got there for an actual game. Even then... that is a major stretch.

    This is just a theory, but Argonaut Games pitched a game for the nintendo 64 that was going to be a 3d platformer with Yoshi as the protagonist, nintendo ended up rejecting the offer because they didn't wanted a 3rd party to use one of their characters, at the end they released it as "Croc: Legend of the Gobbos" for every gaming system at the moment except for the n64.
    This image might be the proof of concept of said game before they had to rework it to release it as a completely different game, there's so little info about it because they didn't wanted people to know Nintendo and Argonaut had gotten in such an argument.

However great Video Indeed because I’m never See This Mystery Game before I think is Lot better then Yoshi Story From Game Boy Advance when is original in Spaceworld 2000 back in August 2000. I was 2 Years Old when this came out in Spaceworld. The Game never came out and is very sad for me but I wish it was because I will play everyday when the game came out. This game is very similarity to Yoshi look in Yoshi’s Safari But it might be sequel to SNES into the better graphics like N64 or GameCube.

    I have a mystery for you (actually, it's the third time I write this under one of your videos).
    I had some time ago a videogame magazine from 2003-2004 (I'm Italian BTW) that had some info cards about the main Nintendo heroes, with random trivia about each series. One phrase always struck my head since then:
    "Captain Falcon once collaborated with Fox McCloud and Professor Oak to build a multipurpose vehicle"
    The mention of Professor Oak makes obvious that the vehicle is actually the ZERO-1 from Pokémon Snap, but still, from where that thing came from? I smell that is some weird story made up by Nintendo Power writers around the release of Pokémon Snap, but I'd like to find some information about this. (I have also some other weird stories, but they were blatantly made up by the magazine writers like "Wonderboy is actually Raiden from Metal Gear Solid when he was young" and "Samus Aran and Turrican are married")

    It's a mock-up in my opinion. There can be some differences in characters designs in some cases, but that saddle and Yoshi model overall look completely off. Also, Purple Yoshi doesn't wear green shoes.
    The giveaway for me is how smooth the model looks, no GBA could look like that due to the low resolution. All 3D GBA games have fuzzy edges.

    In general, that image screams fake... but also, there are aspects of it that make more sense for a tech demo than for a mockup. It makes perfect sense for a tech demo to use a purple Yoshi with green shoes, as it better shows off the number of colors displayed on-screen at once. A more common green Yoshi would have a body and shoes close in color to the surroundings. The scenery could be changed, of course... but the trees and their shadows are also something you'd want to show off in a tech demo, so a forest is a good fit for something like this. The spiders also seem like a deliberate choice, to better show off the shadows of their legs moving in real time. It's hard to imagine a mockup taking things like this into consideration; if it were me, I would probably go with a green Yoshi and some existing Mario enemies.

    Hi LSuperSonicQ
    I loved this video! My name is James Lowe, I'm one of the original IGN crew that worked on the website, boards and testing. You can hear my voice a lot, including HA HA! The trick to beating the timers is to find the straight roads and nitro like crazy. Nitro
    knocks other cars out of the way too. If passengers don't want to go to a
    place that makes use of the highway, eject 'em! The donut mission in
    the final level is a bug that didn't get fixed in time. The time limit
    is too tight but you can exploit a bug to beat it: parking meters are
    frictionless so you can do a nitro slide down the sidewalk. That'll buy
    you enough time to get around those dumb trains. And, as someone
    mentioned here: use shotgun for Hoverboy. The Uzi makes more sense with a
    Thustmaster steering wheel, especially in the park; not so good with
    arrow keys.
