I think I would keep Midas. He has less rust and the case can be fixed, vs Marigold's case which has issue with the rotting fabric. Plus there is just something more satisfying about getting a typewriter for $5.00 and actually have it work well, plus very little damage to the outside of the machine. My first typewriter was a 1955 Underwood Leader and it was also $5.00 at a local reuse store. It has special meaning, since she was our first, but also because of the price!
"Price of an education", classic. For that C key if bending hasn't worked, you could try a very fine metal file and smoothing out the part of the slug that goes into the vibrator. Just a tiny bit can really help. I'd take one off your hands, but shipping to Sydney... yeah, nah.
Bent case, paracord "handle", but it still has the key for the case? Sweet!
I can't tell you which one to keep and which to sell. But as one who grew up with typewriters, I really enjoyed this video. That, plus a woman who clearly knows a lot about typewriters = cool. A woman who clearly knows a lot about typewriters and collects them = way cool. A woman who clearly knows a lot about typewriters, collects them and knows how to fix them, too = AWESOME!
I would personally keep the larger font. That would be appealing to me.
That's interesting how the "we r memory keepers" machine was an option for parts! I can see the dilemma though with the two... I can see you already re-homed Marigold, but was gling to say in a case where you're really having a dilemma like that, if re-homing it to a close friend or family member is an option, that's something to consider, for the sake of still being able to see it or have access to it from time to time!
I would keep Midas. The white case is far more novel in its design and works better with the grey and gold colours of the machine itself. In addition, having a case that is not rusted internally can make it better for cleaning/ repairing and the typewriter will be less likely to acquire rust, dust, or must issues from a cleaner case. There is some paint wear, though if the machine is generally more functional, I'd keep it.
It's rather unfortunate that in the area I'm located, the price of the average manual typewriter is inflated. A drawback to urban life I suppose. As per a previous video of yours, I think it may be beneficial to seek machines in a more rural area.
You may want to try estate sales- there's definitely a benefit to having to get rid of everything all at once when it comes to negotiating power!
@@JustMyTypewriter that’s a fair point; I’ve had some luck at a few of them. Happy typing!
We sure enjoyed this video. We have several Underwoods and enjoy using them and there different looks and feels. Thanks so much for a great video, love the old ads! Loved the history!
also, keep them both and use the Pica one for headlines in your letters!
Nice score! I guess Spring Typewriter Hunting Season started early for you (:
If you have a steamer that might cleanup the case more, the browning or dirt. I use cellulose sponges for white items, also hydrogen peroxide can help yellowing on plastics and some faux leather cases like that, can look that up of course. Though half sure you already know all this 😄
You should see my simple green clean video from a few weeks ago- it's much improved!
@@JustMyTypewriter I'll check it out!
I love this typewriter. I think its beautiful.
Me too!
I ❤ only God.
Neat machines! Which to keep? Tough call. I think I’d keep the one that has less rust and is in better overall condition after whatever cleaning/refurbishing you accomplish. (Also FYI, pica is pronounced “PIE-ca,” rhyming with “pie”.)
Since you answered one of my questions (if you sat in front of either one and had to write a long essay or something that took awhile), what would the experience be like- you seemed to suggest this wouldn't be a good typewriter for that. So my preference is smaller typefaces so you can fit more words per line before returning to the next line. Ultimately, slow returning slugs are not a problem if corrected but greatly reduce your typing speed ability, so does either one return (most) of the slugs more quickly? Lastly, does either one "speak" to you more and feel more like an extension of your arm vs a cold hard machine?
They're both BEAUTIFUL typewriters, and WOW, for $5.00 for the new one, I'm jealous! LOL! Maybe try swapping typewriter cases and see if that doesn't help you decide a person feeling towards one or the other-- Ed
Keep Midas but use Marigold for parts to bring it to perfect working condition. Call the new fixed one Jules.
Midas, overall better condition, less to repair.
I would keep Midas. The rust, deteriorating case and smell from Marigold will only get worse ( sorry Marigold)
I would keep Midas :-)
Wife says ask for Midas in Marigolds case🤣.And broken one and $$
I may have already rehomed one....
Midas, for sure.
Joe Van Cleave has a video where he talks about his process for going through his collection and deciding what machines to keep and which ones he is going to let go of. It is episode 252 of his Typewriter Video Series here: ruclips.net/video/vA0dE88tVzc/видео.html
Thanks!
From watching your video, it seems like you may *slightly* favor Midas, so I would go with that. What did you decide?
I did end up keeping MIdas- seems like I made the right call based on everyone else's comments!
I got a $10 Remington Model 24 in perfect condition!
I have one of these...broken. I will trade you that one and some $$ for one of yours. I love these but need pica tf.
Can you share the site where you purchased the replacement handle?
Oh- yes! It's from Brettuns Village Leather Supplies- brettunsvillage.com/
Thanks
Yay! I got Midas!
Happy he's in a good home!!
King Midas?
What did you end up doing in the end? Which did you keep?
Midas- the 5$ one! If you watch my "I sold 10 typewriters" I talk about it!
Do you have any case keys? Mine is missing
I have them with some of my machines- You don't really need them if you don't lock the case
Square luggage. IYKYK.😅
It may be $5 peeps, but some typewriters aren’t worth your time. These late Underwoods are junk when perfect.
I think it's also important to mention that even if a machine isn't worth repairing, it may have some value for parts! Definitely up to user preference
@@JustMyTypewriter Absolutely parts are important. I’m just sharing what I’ve learned pretty quickly - there’s a reason Underwood was going out of business by the time they were selling these. Better to put a tank of gas investment into a good model up front and not be tied to the $10 whipping post?
@@JB-uv4hm I can absolutely see your point! I think that gets to be up to the individual user and what they determine is worth their time and effort
Midas for sure
