  • VALIS is a 1981 science fiction novel by Philip K. Dick. The title is an acronym for Vast Active Living Intelligence System, Dick's gnostic vision of one aspect of God.
It is the first book in the VALIS trilogy of novels including The Divine Invasion (1981), and The Transmigration of Timothy Archer (1982), VALIS represents Dick's last major work before he died.
Horselover Fat believes his visions expose hidden facts about the reality of life on Earth, and a group of others join him in researching these matters. One of their theories is that there is some kind of alien space probe in orbit around Earth, and that it is aiding them in their quest. It also aided the United States in disclosing the Watergate scandal and the resignation of Richard Nixon in 1974. There is a filmed account of an alternative universe Nixon, "Ferris Fremont" and his fall, engineered by a fictionalised Valis, which leads them to an estate owned by the Lamptons, popular musicians. Valis (the fictional film) contains obvious references to identical revelations to those that Horselover Fat has experienced. They decide the goal that they have been led toward is Sophia, who is two years old and the Messiah or incarnation of Holy Wisdom anticipated by some variants of Gnostic Christianity. She tells them that their conclusions are correct, but dies after a laser accident. Undeterred, Fat goes on a global search for the next incarnation of Sophia. Dick also offers a rationalist explanation of his apparent "theophany", acknowledging that it might have been visual and auditory hallucinations from either schizophrenia or drug addiction sequelae.

When I first read Do androids dream of electric sheep, I had no idea this is where I'd end up. But, A scanner Darkly should have clued me in I suppose. As I've gone through his literature, I feel like I'm a voyeur of his life and thoughts. I notice his quirks and philosophy, and I feel grateful to have lived in a timeline where he once existed. Everything is fucked these days, but I feel better knowing he felt that before the internet and the new world order became blatantly obvious. Not really a conspiracy theorist anymore, but each day in 2021 feels increasingly wrong and foreign to me. Like instead of iterations of the world getting better, it's in a decidedly worse course than each day before it. Where is Deckard and Iran these days, where is Rachel haha

You should listen to The Unabombers Manifesto. He did wrong no doubt. Completely messy unethical wrong but boy was he beyond his time philosophically and knew what was coming. He was a genius after all and true genius are the craziest almost every time. Its crazy how accurate his writings were.

The phone rang, it was Bob, the husband.
"Where are you right now?" he asked.
    The question bewildered him.
He was at home, where his phone was!

He was, and the nice thing is that in as much as we his readers keyed on his works, he knew he wasn't alone, at least in the sense of these apprehensions of being, phenomenon, psychology, humanity, as much as anyone can tell of "the reality to which we are part" day to day. Or, I want to think so...

The idea that Horselover Fat is simply the 'mad' aspect of PKD, the sane and sober writer, is misleading and even a gross oversimplification that robs the book of its rich depth and wonderful originality. Without Fat there is no PKD. Most of the real substance in PKD's work (not just Valis) comes from the 'madness' of Fat. What PKD does is shape the raw experience of Fat into material that is digestible by at least a portion of the bourgeois consumer society (including PKD) that needs relief from its own decadent condition that it can't see how to escape. PKD owes everything to Fat and takes on the task of finding a way for Fat to survive in a brutally hostile world. What PKD got from Fat is the heroic and insatiable need to find reality and truth in an "occluded" world. And PKD accepted the responsibility of protecting this beautiful and vulnerable creature that is the flawed precious gem fragment of himself. This is what makes Valis such a wonderful book. And the same can be said of PKD's work in toto.

There's lots of things expounded later through the book
Like when she mentions how a grateful dead song was instrumental in getting her on coke
The protagonist doesn't understand at the time, even suggesting the song was meant to kinda do the opposite
He finds himself in her shoes later in the book
Next read-through I will pay more attention to his relationship with his ex wife
The 'subliminal speech' section in the film naked lunch comes to mind here (Burroughs was another narco-prophet)
The theme also appears in do androids dream of electric sheep...
2 years later, Thanks for mentioning these things, I'm always interested in Venus and Mars
