Philip Kindred Dick (December 16, 1928 -- March 2, 1982) was an American novelist, short story writer and essayist whose published work is almost entirely in the science fiction genre. Dick explored sociological, political and metaphysical themes in novels dominated by monopolistic corporations, authoritarian governments, and altered states. In his later works Dick's thematic focus strongly reflected his personal interest in metaphysics and theology. He often drew upon his own life experiences in addressing the nature of drug abuse, paranoia, schizophrenia, and transcendental experiences in novels such as A Scanner Darkly and VALIS.

"VALIS" by Philip K. Dick (PKD) is a fascinating and complex novel that blends science fiction with semi-autobiographical elements, exploring themes of reality, spirituality, and human consciousness. The title stands for "Vast Active Living Intelligence System," which the protagonist, Philip K. Dick (a fictionalized version of the author himself), perceives as a form of divine intelligence that communicates with him, providing insights and revelations about the nature of existence. ### Key Themes: 1. **The Nature of Reality:** "VALIS" delves into what is real and what is not, challenging the reader to question the very fabric of their perceptions. PKD plays with the idea that reality might be a construct, a theme he explores through the experiences of his characters who encounter alternate realities and divine interventions. 2. **Divine Intelligence and Spirituality:** The concept of VALIS as a divine, almost god-like intelligence that interacts with the world is central to the novel. It raises questions about the existence of a higher power and the ways in which such a power might communicate with humanity. 3. **Mental Illness and Perception:** The protagonist's experiences and the question of his sanity play a critical role in the narrative. PKD explores the fine line between visionary experiences and mental illness, inviting readers to consider the reliability of their perceptions and beliefs. 4. **Gnosticism and Religious Philosophy:** The novel incorporates Gnostic themes, presenting the idea that hidden knowledge (gnosis) can lead to a deeper understanding of the universe and our place in it. PKD uses these themes to explore concepts of salvation, enlightenment, and the nature of God. ### Analysis: "VALIS" is a deeply introspective work that reflects PKD's own explorations of metaphysics, theology, and philosophy. The novel's narrative structure, blending autobiography with fiction, allows PKD to interrogate the nature of existence in a way that is both personal and universal. Through the character of Philip K. Dick, the author examines the porous boundaries between sanity and madness, reality and illusion, offering no easy answers but instead presenting a rich tapestry of ideas for the reader to navigate. The book is not just a science fiction novel but a philosophical inquiry that challenges readers to consider their own beliefs about reality, consciousness, and the divine. PKD's work remains profoundly influential, not only within the science fiction genre but also in philosophical discussions about the nature of reality and human understanding. "VALIS" exemplifies PKD's ability to fuse speculative fiction with deep philosophical questions, making it a seminal work that continues to inspire

This was a great x-one episode!
I don't think there is a setting on my machine that would allow me to put up with Calista Flockhart for too long.
This is my favourite version, heard it years ago, love the intro music, sound scapes of the future.

What a great read.
It really feels like Dick is trying to promote God and religion with this book. Am I missing something? Or is this just religious propoganda to promote the idea of faith?
How could you come to this conclusion?

Thank you!
10 minutes in and I hate this book. just garbage.
im happy joe only needed to be told to say willis 11 times almost gave up.
The film 'Total recall' is based on this story I believe
I forgot this ending, having watched it so many times. Great narration!
How is this an alternate version?
I like how they bring up hitlers punishment
So many of these characters are so selfish and silly, quite funny
Just when I'm on track, there's an LSD TRIP
i would love to make a 8 part series aduptation set in around the 2030s but not with all the future jazz but to modernize it like spaceX trips to mars but there is a resistance on the planer they landed there shortly after the fusion revolution creation the partical highway between the planets. the characters i would def go for a more sterile new commer aproch so i could select the Clerk type job for Quale and prob change the names to make it an every man story but it would End with a what if wake up in the rekal chair but there are sub plots i want to try and actually expand it as a series with each one being a new telling of a the same narative but with diffrent era themes
A futuristic dystopia where billionaries set up personal colonies to exploit would be really on point, though I don't know who would finance and produce it, lol. And revolution on Mars is a recurring theme, remember the game series Red Faction? Can pull parts from there and from this story and make something that would be an opposite to the Martian, where they idealize life as a colonist probably going insane in years of cold isolation.
Wow, this is dreadful. Love the original book and audiobook on your channel

Thank You Sir !
Just discovered this! Thank you so much! This is AWESOME! ❤️
What story WOW
This isn't VALIS.
I can understand some people having an aversion to the writing style as it is rather blunt in its use of derogatory language and stereotypes. Anyone who takes the language to task though should read more of the classics and open their mind a little more. Also those who take the derogatory language and stereotypes seriously should do the same
33:41 gotta love pkd
The idea that Horselover Fat is simply the 'mad' aspect of PKD, the sane and sober writer, is misleading and even a gross oversimplification that robs the book of its rich depth and wonderful originality. Without Fat there is no PKD. Most of the real substance in PKD's work (not just Valis) comes from the 'madness' of Fat. What PKD does is shape the raw experience of Fat into material that is digestible by at least a portion of the bourgeois consumer society (including PKD) that needs relief from its own decadent condition that it can't see how to escape. PKD owes everything to Fat and takes on the task of finding a way for Fat to survive in a brutally hostile world. What PKD got from Fat is the heroic and insatiable need to find reality and truth in an "occluded" world. And PKD accepted the responsibility of protecting this beautiful and vulnerable creature that is the flawed precious gem fragment of himself. This is what makes Valis such a wonderful book. And the same can be said of PKD's work in toto.
In some ways, Fat is the believing, hopeful aspect of PKD that saved him from suicide
