- Why install a Soft Start? Because it helps reduce start up surge! This is most likely what is happening when your AC trips the breaker. In this video I go over the question of why install an Easy Start? I talk about how it works and give a Micro Air Easy Start review. We are now in our 4th year of using an Easy Start in both of our Coleman Mach 8 RV air conditioners and it allows us to run an AC with a small generator, over a 15A plug, run two ACs on a 30A campground connection, and run AC on solar.

My dad is visiting and has a Y cord based on your suggestion to him. He’s running both ac units in his RV from our horse barn. Pretty neat!
Glad to hear it's working out!
I found this interesting and glad you have your units up and working well. Melted cords is a scary situation. Live and learn and Camp On!
Yes, thankfully the melted cord situation wasn't worse. Definitely embarrassing to do that to someone hosting you at their house! The real issue was older electrical outlets that were loose and didn't hang onto the plug well. About $3 and a trip to the hardware store later and I had put in a couple of new outlets and never had that issue again!
Very cool, definitely an important modification for certain situations!
That's a really good way to put it! It might not be worthwhile for everyone.
Very nice video. Being a "quantitative sort," would have appreciated your using a clamp-on ammeter to show the "before and after" effects on start-up amperage draw. (Micro-Air claims up to about a 70 percent reduction in peak draw: would love to know your experience).
Thanks! Unfortunately, measuring it wasn't an option for me. A standard clamp meter can't catch it because the startup surge happens too fast for it to accurately measure. Maybe with an Oscilloscope and a current transducer or some other way of measuring a quick current pulse... I can tell you that with the EasyStarts installed we can run two AC units on a 30A connection or a single 15k BTU unit on our 2200W generator. Now that we have a solar setup, the surge isn't noticeable on the inverters either.
Thank you for the video.
You're welcome! Hope it helps!
Just installed a soft start today. I think these units should come with them. We have a 95k class c. What’s another $300? It makes such a huge difference!
Nice, exactly! I'd add it to the growing list of "must haves" for any new RV. They really do make a big difference.
Just another thing to buy amongst the other 1000 items if you want a smoothly functioning RV.
@@dreamup8431 no kidding. We upgraded from a tent trailer to a class c Entegra last year because we planned a bunch of huge road trips. We’ve spent probably 20k on upgrades and that’s with me doing all the work. It’s finally reliable and dialed in.
@@randyheckman3733 lol, I’d bought a roof tent and started down the rabbit hole of wanting more. Ended up getting a fifth wheel (last Tuesday) and have already spent $4000 on ‘essentials’ with more to buy down the road.
@@dreamup8431 slippery slope, eh? Haha
The reason you have a large power demand on compressor start up is due to the high pressure differentials and the difficulrty of turning over the motor to overcome that. How does a soft start reduce the amount of power needed to start the compressor. A hot shot would seem a better option
Naturally, there's no magical way to reduce the power needed. A soft start just spreads that initial power surge out over a few more milliseconds. It doesn't sound like much but it makes a world of difference.
