Hey Alec when clamping in the milling vise, always clamp against the solid jaw (the jaw that doesn't move). Because the soft jaw (moving jaw) can have "slop" in it and making clamping square much harder!!!
From an X-machinist, and I do like the videos. Watching you learn as you go!

Alec the excepted practice for a machinist for squaring up stock in the mill is to hold the work piece tight against the fixed jaw of the vice with either a flattened off ball (search screwy balls) or a small wire rod (1/8 inch) held between the moving jaw and the work piece when tightening up. hope this helps you feel better about what you are doing in the shop.
have a good day and a better tomorrow

  • @amricke

    Beautiful piece of work, friend.
I'm afraid that I do have one negative critique though: Your pommel is upside down.
I understand the machining and inability to incorporate the spring mechanism (didn't stop you from doing nice work), but the clip goes on the top of the knife to secure it to the rifle.
Keep up the entertaining and informative videos. 👍

it'd be a bit hard mounting it on a rifle. But then, if you're that close to the bad guy, don't use a bayonet...SHOOT THE BASTARD

    • @jonmoore8261
      @jonmoore8261 4 года назад

The bayonet is for when the rifle is unloaded. The pommel is backwards the springing mechanism in the pommel is for attaching to the rifle, the larger hole is where the muzzle goes through.

I think he mentioned that it's a patented process and he wants to respect the patent, since he'd be using it for a video (which is a commercial use) and so potentially he could be sued by the patent-holders. Plus I mean, I imagine even if they didn't sue he wouldn't want to violate the patent's rights, he seems a decent guy and that's the decent thing to do.

I know I'm late to the party here but that is an amazing piece. The little Damascus ninja face down close to the ricasso is the best incidental pattern placement ever. Having used M9 bayonets in the military I can say you definitely did the knife justice.

I love hearing my favorite makers talk about each other! I agree with everyone though. Adam and Alec need to do a collaboration.

While watching you machine the hilt I started to think how cool it would be if you made your very own Damascus steel lightsaber hilt!

Delrin is a thermoplastic so you can heat the Tang and push it into the delrin at the end for a fit which is tight and perfect.

I would love to see you put up a display area in the workshop or your office, of previous builds. Maybe glass covered, chronological even? Either way it would be cool to see your work over the years in the background as you build new projects.

Beautiful knife Alec, as for the lineup, the piece of rod is a perfectly acceptable method. I am a machinist, and the method for lining up a part depends greatly on how accurate it needs to be, for what you need the touch test will get you close enough. If it was something I was setting up I would use an indicator mounted to a stub in the collet, leave the machine in neutral and pivot the indicator around the outside of your stock until it reads zero all the way around. A third method (also the best and most accurate) is to use what is called a Coaxial Indicator, it works similar to the indicator but it has a small probe that can go inside the hole itself. Keep up the good work, I look so forward to seeing your videos at the end of the day and on more than a few occasions they have really helped to bring a bad day around. I would also like to add that if you have any machining questions I would be happy to offer any advice I can. If you are interested let me know and I will message you my email. One last thing, COULD YOU PLEASE NOT LEAVE THE CHUCK KEY IN THE LATHE CHUCK!!!! even if only for a second, that is a good way to get hurt or damage your machine. I just got an old Logan lathe with a chunk missing out of the bead from a key being left in the chuck.

Alex, SV Seeker uses that material on several places in the boat being constructed. For the rectangular hole try a broach.

When you go to cut the threaded section off to make it shorter screw a nut down on to the threads. That way once you cut off what you need you unscrew the nut and it chases your threads for you meaning less clean up

A lot of hard work went into this knife, mad respect Alec Steel!. Been collecting knifes since I was a little kid. This is absolutely the most beautiful knife to me I've EVER had a pleasure to watch be created. Especially by a young 17 year old teen. Man, your attitude and passion is very contagious and inspiring to me and I'm sure others. Watching the build of this particular knife was absolutely amazing. The end result was mind blowing to me! I could only dream of owning this beautiful and one of a kind masterpiece, that you built with your own hands! Congratulations Alec, best looking knife (to me) I've EVER seen. JUST BEAUTIFUL! I have knifes worth tons of money, but If I ever owned this knife, it would be a priceless piece in my collection. And my number 1.
    Amazing!

It would be cool if you would make something out of canister damascus. Maybe made from all the milling n' drilling shavings that's accumulated from previous projects.
Love your content Alec, stay awesome!

When working with threads, cutting and filing them, you want to push the file in a way that the burr doesn't go towards threads and stuck the thread.
If you push from the thread side, to the cut side, the burr will go outside the thread, and thread will work much easier.
