.380 ACP VS .38 Special in Compact Guns - Federal Hydrashok Ballistic Gel Test

- The .380 ACP is a 90 gr JHP rated at 1,000 FPS and the .38 Special is a 110 gr JHP rated at 980 FPS. I do a 10% Clear Ballistics ballistic gel test. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...
My last and only video with the .38 Special Hydrashok 'low recoil' 110 gr - also shows how far the channel has come. ruclips.net/video/343pyHRPCdA/видео.html
You need to compare 135-147gr 9mm to the high quality soft point and hollow point 38spl+P stuff and the 135-155gr 40sw because the 115gr 9mm always gets the velocity advantage over every ammo you use except 357mag & 357sig... P.S. I absolutely love your Videos
Thanks for all these videos you do Sam. They are entertaining and full of good information. I carry 24/7 and have for many years. As I'm getting older, I have found myself carrying 38 snub revolvers. In my youth, I carried mainly large, service size autos in 9mm, 10mm, 40sw and 45. My current carry is 2 S&W 642 38's. I go back and forth on my carry ammo. Everything from plus p Federal Punch to the much hatred by most- the old 158gr LRN. I have some Aguilla 38 158gr semi jacketed hollow points. They are rated at 900 fps, but are standard velocity. Do you have any experience/ opinions on this round? I figure if they do expand, fine. If not, they are still a 158gr slug (I do favor the 158gr in 38 special).
Yes. You have really developed and added to your set-up, your camera work, and your presentation. The MDF plus denim into ballistic gelatin is the best ‘real world simulation’ on RUclips. It’s all great. But honest: I do miss the “I got wet again” and the Bologna Bit in the Face! of the Jug or Not Box. Just sayin…. 😂🤣😂🤣
impressive distant shots
Impressive marksmanship at distance. The Federal Hydra Shock is what I carry in my LCP.
Thank you. I have tested a few other thus far in unreleased videos. I am really liking how the Gold Dot performed in the Shield EZ.
I’ve wondered this a lot but (before watching the video) assumed .38 edged it out. This is what we want Sam! I own both calibers although I’m more interested in larger bore handguns atm, but like I said still curious about these little rounds.
By now, I put my thumbs up to your videos even before I see them. 👍
Great shooting. I’m a fan of the Federal Hydrashoks. They might not be as powerful as say, Underwood, but you said it best. They’re a good middle ground defensive round that will do the job you need it to do.
I actually ran the underwood today but don't have a specific date when I will be releasing the video. What I can say is the standard pressure was no more powerful than these Hydrashoks. I will have to go up to the .380 ACP+P (which I really don't want to do, but will) in order to see some better .380 ACP performance.
@@GunSam Why not wanting to try the +P .380?
As soon as you layed out what you would be testing in this video, I said to myself, this will be interesting.
I was not wrong.
Thanks a lot.
That 380 pistol is starting to look real interesting after several videos.
I’ve never owned a 380; but…
Hickok's gong is at 80 yards--- you are just as good buddy!
I really enjoy your videos. Very informative and fun to watch. The work you put into your videos is very appreciated. Ty from Ohio.
Thank you. Hello from Michigan
Hydra-Shoks are what I have usually carried in my .380s, mainly because it was what my old dept issued for BUGs and when I tested it vs cars, boards, and tires, it did fine. As my supply has dwindled, I've replaced them with the best I could find that run well. That's still what my Beretta .380 is loaded with. As such, I really liked this test. They seem to do okay. FWIW, when shot them vs mounted, pressurized car tires, they carved out a hole like a cookie-cutter and let air out fast. That seems to indicate that if they don't expand, maybe they'll still let blood out from a wound that may otherwise close up somewhat. Anyway, great info as always.
You’ve got skills with a revolver
Those long distance shots were impressive. I could use some pointers from this guy. Love revolvers
Really good demonstration, and very informative.
Thank you
Very useful information! And your handgun accuracy at 75 yards is SUPERNATURAL. Random thought: a loose fitting holster is easily cured with a strip of "Dr Scholls Moleskin" which has really strong and moisture proof adhesive. Give the area a quick wipedown with an alcohol pad first and let it dry, then align the strip carefully before contact................................elsullo
Thank you. I had thought about trying different solutions, maybe even layers of Gorilla tape lol.
Wow, you're right - that revolver definitely favors the lighter .38s! 👀
...And a nice neck and brain shot on that zombie 🧟♂️ with the semi-auto (entertaining, lol 😆).
thats good shooting! thanks for the info
Just found your channel. This is the best channel for guns in calibers I actually carry. Don't need a gel test on 300 win mag. Great job, and hope RUclips puts you up higher on ballistic gel test searches.
I love the compromise middle ground performance summary. Just what I've been looking for.
I agree with your assessment of what a good compromise is: give up some expansion, but not over penetrate.
Hey-o
I have a .380 EZ that (knock wood) hasn't missed a lick in two years and over 800 rds.
That included hydro-shock, which was second most accurate to Underwood 100 gr hardcast. I really like the gun. I shoot .38's in my GP100 (+p's), but I can't conceal it hardly at all on my 5'4" 155 lb frame. Both are great guns.
So far so good with my Shield EZ. I have tested a bunch of hollow point ammo in it. Have a bunch of unreleased content. No jams yet.
@@GunSam 👍 first semi-auto I've owned that I could say that about... Scary.
Thank for the info.
Very nice long range shooting man!!! Cheers!!!
Always a good review, excellent!
Thanks. Good video and ammo comparison. As always nice shooting. Take care.
Thank you, take care.
Great shooting, always enjoy your videos AND usually a pen in hand to catch information that you share.
Thanks Sam
👍😊the funny thing is I just watched a video on these two and now yours with the same results.
Another great video! Thanks for sharing!
Not a bad looking .380! Despite not fully expanding with the MDF, it penetrated enough both with and without it. Better than I've observed with most of the others!
Great video and nice shooting!
That was impressive. Good shooting! I was left wondering how those loads would perform out of a snubby /lcp.
Great test, both rounds did well. Thanks for the test. Seamed like your Taurus acted up on one shot...bummer
Thank you. It needs to be well lubed to run. I have noticed that the extractor rod gets sticky often. Have to really lube it up, take it out and clean and lube every cleaning. The rod will stick backwards with no debris or anything under the star. Extra lube prevents it.
Great shooting and testing of these rounds. The Taurus despite it's limitations, etc is still working out in the testing rounds on a 3 in barrel. Thank you for all you do. ♠️🎩🎯🎱🇺🇲🏁🇺🇦🔱🌻💮🌸🏵️🏴☠️🚅
Thank you. I was running the Underwood 125+P's today in it. Averaging about 1,220 FPS. Handled them fine.
@@GunSam good deal 👍
FBI tests are specifically designed for police use of handguns, which includes apprehension. The FBI standard is a bit strict for pure defensive use, because self defense can include ESCAPE for both the aggressors and defender. That said, stopping the aggression in the shortest interval with the least number of shots fired should be a universal goal. You explain your gel setup, and it is a logical and somewhat accurate simulation. 👍👍
MY STANDARD HAS ALWAYS BEEN A WORST CASE SCENARIO THAT HAPPENED NEAR ME 25 YEARS AGO -- 300lb BAD GUY IN FULL WINTER CLOTHING & HEAVY SHEEPHERDER COAT WALKED INTO A STORE TO ROB IT -- TOOK A 38 SPECIAL TO THE CHEST & TOOK THE GUN AWAY FROM THE CLERK & KILLED HIM -- WOUND UP IN THE HOSPITAL 24 HOURS LATER BUT -- CLERK WAS STILL DEAD - ANYTIME I CARRY A 38 IT'S A +P LOADING OVER A 140gr XTP -- I TYPICALLY GET AT LEAST 2 INCHES MORE PENETRATION THAN HE GOT HERE -- MOST OF THE TIME I CARRY A 357 -- OR A 45 -- I WANT A FRIKKING BAZOOKA -- OVER PENETRATION HAS NEVER WORRIED ME AT ALL -- UNTIL IT HAPPENS THATS JUST TUFF SH1T
Have you tested any xtps from this longer barrel EZ yet? like from Fiocchi should perform well and get more expansion.
Yes, I actually did that today with the Underwood standard pressure 90 gr XTP. Rated at 1,025 FPS and I got upper 900's in the EZ. I would say they performed adequately but there wasn't anything too impressive.
I'm in the process of editing the video, might be some time before I release it but I will say, it did okay in case anyone was wondering. Small uniform expansion, just hitting minimum penetration with that mild expansion, no expansion in the MDF/denim but better penetration than most, no over-penetration.
@@GunSam There is a new .380 hitting the market with a longer barrel I am getting pretty interested in as a good option for women or disabled etc.
I'd go with .38 Special over .380, that's just me. I think it's a larger cartridge and a heavier bullet that hits a little harder and goes a little deeper.
That’s what she said 🤣
I just picked up a Taurus 856 2" and a Charter Arms 2.5" Bulldog in 44 Special. I'm using my M-10 speedloaders from the K Frame Smiths I had and they seem to be close enough. The Colt Detective Special speedloaders are supposed to be the actual ones for the 856. Hopefully I'll get out tomorrow and shoot both of my new revolvers and post a video.
Will be cool to see. I have wanted a Bulldog for years. Back in 2020 I almost got one, then decided I wanted more barrel length, was gonna get the target 4" Bulldog, then found my S&W model 69. I use the Bulldog loaders for the model 69 and they work exactly right.
Hey, Gun Sam, have you seen the new Winchester big bore in 357 mag and 44 mag? The 44 has a rated velocity of 1485 fps, that's pretty much a full power 44 magnum load. I picked up a box to test out.
I figured out how to fix the cylinder rotation issue on the 856. The cylinder stop drops so early so removing material from the spot where the trigger drops it down allows it to stay in place during that small play in the trigger before the hand is able to engage and not allow the cylinder to rotate back. I've tested with 2 dummy 158's and it's good to go. In normal practice I cannot lightly pull the trigger to let the cylinder spin.
Thanks for the test
I don't know what you paid for this ammo. But given both are low recoil loadings, I think they did pretty well. I still haven't found anyone who enjoys having holes poked into them.
Sam, where did you find the box of 50 for the 380?
Thank you sir 🙏
Good video, thanks . What Revolver do you use?
Question, why don't you put chronograph over gel block so you know exactly what velocity makes what depth? Plus you save bullets too 😉
Jealous of the new .380 I love getting a new black polymer pistol it looks nice to shoot Does it have the red/green fiber optics?
Just white dot sights
Yep
I still have some of the original hydro shock 148 grain wadcutter.
Looks like 90 grain FMJ will do the same thing and cost 40% of the price.
Hey Sam, been wanting to suggest this as it is my question. I enjoy carrying a snubbie 357 mag with hardcast underwood ammo as a woods carry. I would really like to see this round and platform vs a full size 9mm with the underwood hardcast as well. As I live in the mountains of New Mecico, Am I ok with my snubbie? Or is it really better with my p320 for woods carry against dangerous threats, i.e. Blackbear. Think about a video, and i'll keep watchin..🇺🇸⚓🍻

I am really sad that junk Taurus is turning my favorite “Revolver Aficionado” away from wheel guns to *gasp* Mouse Gun semi-autos for daily carry. This fudd is bummed 😢😢😢
My other Taurus 605 is decent though. Had to redneck it to make it right, loctite in the extractor rod, spilled some I can't get out so it froze up the cylinder release pin a little. Still opens okay, just sticky. But now no screws fall out, is accurate and reliable. I have noticed the 856 specifically is not like the 605/85's. I even watched a Colion Noir video he recently did with the executive 856, and I commented in it because I SAW the same thing my old one did. Cylinder did not rotate on one of his shots.
Thx for the post 👍🎯🔫🇺🇲
In your civilian life your not going to need the FBI standard. Your not Eliot Ness.
Anything over 10 yards outside the house use a big bore long gun. Inside the house use a 45 APC carbine.
230gr @ 1,000ft is a smack down.
Good to know how to do it either way. Like that kid in the Indiana mall.
It always seems 380 and 38 special are always borderline on performance results. They may expand, they may not. But they will get the job done.
Unless it's Underwood .38 Special lol. Ran some today in the 3" barrel, 125 gr XTP and got over 400 ft lbs energy.
@@GunSam
Yes. From all the test videos I’ve seen Underwood, Buffalo Bore, and now Defiant Munitions are serious about their loads.
Will you test tui ammunition? Like from fort Scott?
Yes, I have some sitting with my ammo in .380 ACP. I plan to pickup a box of .38 Special real soon too.
You claim that the 380 had good expansion and that the 38 special had some expansion but it's penetration was because it had less expansion actually according to your caliper the 38 special had more expansion then the 380. Otherwise good test I do not consider the 380 to be anything but the bare basic bottom floor caliber, it beats a sharp stick. In my stub nose 38 I carry extreme defender plus p by Underwood.
While filming it's not always possible to see exactly what is in the gel. I called what I saw, I measure the bullets with calipers myself, 100% film and production is done by myself so I know all this.
Still poking holes and going into target. So not terrible. Thanks.
Just for kicks one day if you so choose do a 32 long , 327 fed , 32 H&R vs 38 special . 👍🏆KUDOS !!!!
awesome
👍
Ill still take the little extra size and weight of a larger caliber.
It's all a balancing act. There seems to always be a correct weight for each caliber to run well. Like 9mm is fine, but I don't even trust my 20 OZ G2C, I need like 25+ OZ with 9mm, and 15+ with .380 ACP, or maybe 30+ OZ with .45 ACP etc.
@@GunSam I’m wondering if it isn’t just a bullet weight issue.
Kind of like how a 115gr 9mm will expand at a different velocity than a 147 of the exact same bullet type and speed.
.380auto is such a short casing, I'd be surprised if it didn't feed in anything.
My LCP rejects one every magazine, sometimes two. If I had to use it in a defensive situation, I have zero doubts it would NOT jam at least once. Runs ball fine though.
@@GunSam I've never been a fan of .380. I'm not a fan of 9mm either. Hahaha
I am getting more and more convinced 38 Special +p HP are a crapshoot at best 3" and below...The concept of a snubby with a 38 Special HP sounds like a bad design from the get go...
