As I said to on another channel review of this, I am currently building a new GWR station and I will be requiring a new water tower and this will definately be on my purchase list now. The west country voice is brilliant.
@@SamsTrains Dapol need to do different voices now for different regions of the GWR network the Midlands has to have either a Wolverhampton or Birmingham Accent and there needs to be one with a Welsh accent for GWR routes in Wales.
This is actually a great little piece of scenery. I strive for realism in my stock, track, and what have you, and I still think with a bit of weathering it would look just fine - and of course the sound is a lot of fun!
I kinda like when you do non-engine reviews. I mean I love locomotive reviews but not many people do reviews of much pertaining to model railroading, let alone add on accessories and the like. Also you put your "Layout" in quotes, but I mean, it's out, it's laid down, it's definitely qualified as a layout.
Raian Levy It looks like it was supposed to come attached, the packaging has the perfect angle in it. You'd expect them to support the tower more if they could.
Sam , I’d mod the filler hose pipe / bag , if you had something flimsy like say black bin liner material cut to size and fixed on place , it’s more flexible and would not bump into or foul the tender or say an A4 or another tank engine . . . . .
avlisk good idea , but you want something really flexible when the water pipe moves it will Prototypically move the bag onto the filler cap on the loco , I think heat shrink may still be a bit rigid . One sound bite is missing from that FX chip though . . . “ can’t go yet , squires not here ! “
There is a water tower similar to this at Buckfastleigh. I took a photo of it and judging from that, the vertical line on the tank it is where the two pieces of metal are joined. The one at Buckfastleigh is supported by a vertical riveted girder and has no conical roof, but in other respects it is similar. When I was at Buckfastleigh, I must admit I didn't hear the water tower talking to itself or deploying the water chute by itself, but that must be because it has yet to be converted to Dalek operation!
4:22 Sam: First though, here's some comprehensive history of the GWR water towers. “Um well, it's just a water tower isn't it”? The best comprehensive history I've ever seen, nice attention to detail Sam! ROUND OF APPLAUSE! 👏
Hi Sam, great review and I got the same model from Rails of Sheffield too. I have added the tower on my loft layout within the steam shed area... It works very well and quite novel...great Wurzel's accent..!!! 😁 I have weathered the tower and painted the brazier and added a fire glow LED under it to represent the de-frosting fire.
Nice video to watch. I personally think a good idea for the next video could be an interview or DIY project of a coal dumpster for steam locomotives. RUclips has had many takes but it would be interesting to see what yours could be.
An amazing videos Sam thank you for showing every one the different scenery on offer from dapol. Can not wait to see more videos like this. Really liked hearing the different sound that were used to add amazing affects to the model. Take care of yourself.
Sam the sewer thing in the bottom with the chains the chains are for hills so if the water tower was on the hill they would attach the chains to the engine so it wouldn't roll down the hill!
This looks awesome! If youre looking for another fun little accessory for the rail road. You could look for a Old Marklin crane, Their old cranky sounding metal cranes with oversized AC motors in the base and a working accessory slot for a working electromagnet or a rare claw. Due to how the motors are build you can use them with DC two.
I didn't expect this thing to have voices! Usually that's something Lionel or MTH would do, and more reserved for O gauge where you can fit a whole mechanism inside the water tower itself. But actually, Broadway Limited did do an operating HO scale water tower with sound and voices, which I didn't know about until today.
I agree the west country accent is brilliant. Although for GWR areas modelled in the Midlands a Wolverhampton or Birmingham accent version would be good. I wonder if Dapol will do other railway companies water towers now? One in Scotland would be interesting.
A good fun thing to have, love the voices. I made a water tower myself out of a granola and yogurt container with a few sticks, electrical cable insulation and a brass tube.
Great vid. What will Sam review next? The world may never know. See thats proof that you can get something for your lay out and it not cost you an arm and a leg. Great find.

Amazing review on the Dapol GWR Water Tower! :D It's nice to see you do a review on a piece of scenery that you would see on a railway, you should do one of these more often! It'll be nice if you did a variety of different stuff to review this year such as locomotives (duh), wagons, coaches, scenery, train sets, and more! BTW, I love the look and the design of the GWR Water Tower, Dapol did an amazing job with this creation! I wonder what other model railway scenery Dapol has made? I can imagine they would make houses and stations too. Hopefully you can get some model railway scenery soon even though you have pretty much everything in your scenery already! :)
Looks ideal for my new small layout, Llyn-y-Lawr, a BR Western Region branch line terminus. The Down Lake, or as it would be in scottish, Loch Doon. Unsure if I should go for the motorised one or stick with the cheap one.
That was a clever idea with that reed switch! To improve the performance, you might try a bit of graphite powder in the upper and lower swivels of the nozzle. Graphite is a dry lubricant so it won't harm the plastic like oil could.
Thanks very much! Great idea - though I think it's moving just fine, it's probably the nature of the mechanism that makes it jerk like that, as they all do it! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I just knew you wouldn’t resist get one of those. I think it’s a good idea and a bit of fun, Hornby take note that is how it should be done and not a wagon playing random noises perhaps they could bring back the motorised coaling stage with sound. Oh and your history, absolute classic 🤣.
You should utilise it for your running sessions. e.g. "fill up" your locos before or while shunting or running! It'd surely make for some variation of movement on the layout.
To expand on that, perhaps stop the odd train at the station, fill up the loco, then resume running, as if passengers have boarded while filling up with water. Just a suggestion! I'd totally buy it if I didn't model N gauge. :p Awesome video, and great fun! -Mikhail
Hi Sam just bought one of these brilliant towers, but I have noticed that the base plate has a definite bend upwards. Looking at as many photos as I could, it seems most of them do this. Slight design problem there. It will not seat properly on baseboard without gluing....Ah well...gluing it is then ! Might let mr. DAPOL know when they return to work.
That's interesting Martin - mine seemed to sit flat, besides the spring from the wires! Yes it's worth letting them know if yours is deformed - you should be entitled to a replacement if that's the case! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
To me, having the slightly jerky operation of the “snout” part actually looks better than a smooth operation would. I’m not sure about the UK, but most (if not all as far as I know) water columns in NSW were pulled over to the loco and put back again by pulling on a chain, (none were motorised in real life, it was all “Armstrong” power) therefore it would have taken quite a few tugs to get it in position and back again.
Love that, wonder if they have regional dialects for different areas, that one definatly sounds dorset area, would love to hear the LNER and/or LMS versions
Sam, I think Dapol intends - and I would *_strongly recommend_* - that you cut the hose bag to clear the tank/tender. Maybe just leave 10mm or so. ALTERNATIVELY: Replace the hose with a strip of very soft black cloth that you fold into a very thin tube. It should effortlessly slip across the tank/tender without straining the mechanism.
Yeah I'd want to keep the length - they were quite long in real life - just a more flexible material would do the trick! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam love the videos they are keeping me sane during these times and in fact they have motivated me to make my own lay out. Would you be able to do a video on how you made yours please? I've always been so curious about your layout.
Great to hear that Stephen - I wouldn't really recommend doing a layout my way - check out some other videos online about building baseboards etc, that's the best way! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I completely agree! Exactly what a model railway accessory should be fun , movement, voices, simple wiring Serious modellers could easily adapt or weather according to taste 👍👍👍👍😊
Hello Sam. Love your channel and the great ideas you come up with. I am wondering if you have a video that gives some back story about how you ended up with a layout on the floor in the loft? It must be an interesting story that I would be keen on hearing! 😀 Thanks for all the great content you produce. -Rick
Thanks very much! I don't actually - there's not much of a story really, I just built it for fun, and then my channel took off! ;D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A great review, despite modelling American Narrow Gauge, it was an interesting article. About that not so flexible pipe. The simplest replacement would be a short length of the outer covering of a black shoelace, flexible and resembles tarred canvas too. Don't use the bit with the aglet though!
you can always do what i do, with the wires make them look like overground pipework to fill up the water tower. i got some wires that are painted off the points that is overground to a signal box. lol "pirate" that is a bristol sort of accent as expected with GWR train drivers lol. same sort of accent as "the wursles" the chains are for holding the hose over the drain, and the chain on the top is to open the valve to dispense the water. usually a two man job. as for the hose i would chance that to a little sleeve of silk. or a shoe lace
haha yes - quick and dirty, but it works! Yes I think those would work much better for the hose - I'll look at doing that! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
3:56 When you took the Dapol GWR Water Tower out of the box, it looks pretty fragile. If I ever own one of these, I have to be very careful not to break anything such as the separately fitted parts on the Water Tower.
With regards to the pipe, to prevent it hitting locos, you should be able to remove it, and it still looks pretty convincing, or you can cut the pipe to length.
That was fun to watch. I really like the idea of this, but find it too costly for me. If it had a cheaper version with motor, but without sound, I might have considered it. Seeing this did remind me that I want to think about how to add background sounds to various places on my layout: talking people at the station, flowing water near a stream, birdsong in a grove of trees, etc. BTW: I didn't see a link.
Thanks very much Diedert - yes they're not cheap, but you do get quite a bit for your money! Yes, that'd be great to do! Rails didn't get back to my email unfortunately :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thanks a lot Russell -yes I thought it was better than the button, but maybe people prefer to operate them remotely? I'm not sure! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Nice accesory, not too expensive, easy to set up and use, and put some original fun on the layout. There is a possibility to have localized versions, with the proper accent (LNER York anyone ? ;-) ). The only setback is the huge fixation prong below, but you had showed us it is not mandatory on this item. Dapol also have working signals with this huge fixation prong below, and that is a pity for be, because it is a no-go with my special type of layout : I have no permanent location in my home for a layout, and I have to use easy to set up and dismantle layouts. That means very low clearance below the surface, 50 mm/2in maximum, and surface-mounted items are a priority. For signals, the german brand Fleischmann manufactures german-style signals in HO and N with the control system besides the signal, which can be surface-mounted easily, nothing hangs below it. If they had, at lesat, put the motor horizontally, that would have been usable for people like me. That's a pity manufacturers does not think of people with temporary layouts/trackmats when manufacturing their items. Fortunately, this water tower is usable, you can cut the prong below, which is not possible on the motirized signals from Dapol (the motor is in the fixation prong !)
Thanks Oliver, my thoughts exactly! haha that's a good idea - I wonder if they'll get someone in to record other versions?! Ahh yes - though fortunately that big prong was easily removed! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Cool model, lots of fun! Can you switch off the vocals or edit the sound at all? I remember building either a dapol or ratio GWR water tower when younger, good little kit plastic with brass ladders and fittings, it looked very similar.
Thanks very much! You can disconnect the speaker plug very easily, but I think the audio files are burned in permanently :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Completely the kind of animated contraption some crazy tech-nerd modellers may spend days to build, animate and add sounds to, so the bang for bucks value is pretty outstanding.
hey sam, do you think it's wierd that the "great western freight" that you talked about in a model railway news comes with a coach, but the "mixed traffic" set doesn't?
Excellent review of the GWR water tower with sound plus voice Sam 👍👍 Are you going to review a Hornby GWR water tower as well other buildings in the near future?
Update: Dapol have now recalled this product due to failures when used with a 15vAC power supply. Dapol strikes again.
Sad times.
That really sucks Sam, I was thinking of buying one.
Just saw that on their Facebook page. Imagine that.
Just had an email from Rails of Sheffield about that. came to see if you already new about it... but yes you do!
Apparently they blow up! Brian Hughes who does the Railmaster youtube channel had one go on him. It blew the top off.

Absolutely - such a shame they didn't design them properly, it really ruined things!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Omg the water tower is epic!
The detail is sick! I really wanted this water tower. (my bucketlist)
haha thank you - I really liked this one too!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
What a super innovative bit of kit that is Sam, I really like it and will have to get one. Regards Terry.
Thanks very much Terry - yes this is just the kind of thing I love!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Oh I was just about to tell you about the product recall but I've just noticed that you already know about it!!!
Thanks mate, yes I read about it! :D
I'm thinking of building a great Western layout so now I can use the water tower
Ooh wow - yeah this'd be perfect! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I don't actually - there's not much of a story really, I just built it for fun, and then my channel took off! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
A great review, despite modelling American Narrow Gauge, it was an interesting article. About that not so flexible pipe. The simplest replacement would be a short length of the outer covering of a black shoelace, flexible and resembles tarred canvas too. Don't use the bit with the aglet though!
Thanks a lot Andrew, glad you found it interesting - yes that'd be fantastic actually, great suggestion!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam: Puts this video in the Locomotive Review Playlist
Literally everyone: Wait. That's illegal.
haha I know - didn't know where else to put it! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Thx for the Review Sam. Great work.
As always entertaining too..!!
Thanks so much mate!! :D
you can always do what i do, with the wires make them look like overground pipework to fill up the water tower.
i got some wires that are painted off the points that is overground to a signal box.
lol "pirate" that is a bristol sort of accent as expected with GWR train drivers lol.
same sort of accent as "the wursles"
the chains are for holding the hose over the drain, and the chain on the top is to open the valve to dispense the water. usually a two man job.
as for the hose i would chance that to a little sleeve of silk. or a shoe lace
haha yes - quick and dirty, but it works! Yes I think those would work much better for the hose - I'll look at doing that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Very different. I've seen signals that work but not a water tower.
Great video. Trying to find things to do to my layout.
Yeah me too - this is pretty different!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great review Sam certainly something very interesting may have to try it one day
Thanks a lot David! :D
Talking about the flexibility of the pipe, couldn't you use some sort of black cottony material to give it a bit more movement?
Yes I think that would have been much better Kevin - it's slightly too rigid as-is!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
3:56 When you took the Dapol GWR Water Tower out of the box, it looks pretty fragile. If I ever own one of these, I have to be very careful not to break anything such as the separately fitted parts on the Water Tower.
Yes indeed - you do have to be very careful with them!!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I bought it and it works fantastic
Great to hear that! :D
With regards to the pipe, to prevent it hitting locos, you should be able to remove it, and it still looks pretty convincing, or you can cut the pipe to length.
Yes you can remove it - I'm hoping to replace it with something more flexible! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Awesome video today Sam I thought it was dcc I’m surprised it’s dc and what controller was you using
Yes I'm very glad it's DC too - very nice bit of kit! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains what controller do you use
That was fun to watch. I really like the idea of this, but find it too costly for me. If it had a cheaper version with motor, but without sound, I might have considered it.
Seeing this did remind me that I want to think about how to add background sounds to various places on my layout: talking people at the station, flowing water near a stream, birdsong in a grove of trees, etc.
BTW: I didn't see a link.
Thanks very much Diedert - yes they're not cheap, but you do get quite a bit for your money! Yes, that'd be great to do! Rails didn't get back to my email unfortunately :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Great video! Just wondering how you managed to remove the screw from under the base?
Thanks a lot Chris - it unscrewed very easily, being careful not to over-twist the wires!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Good one . Nice to see something different . Maybe Dapol will take you up on your reed switch option, would work better for me !
Thanks a lot Russell -yes I thought it was better than the button, but maybe people prefer to operate them remotely? I'm not sure!
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Definitely getting one for my layout! Such fun and practicality!
Awesome Lettuce - yes they are real fun! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hey Sam why don't you make a scene on the third line next to Gordon's hill
It'd be cool, but there's no space - it's under the desk where I sit to do my servicing :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hay Sam!
I got my first Hornby set, due to money saving I got the Christmas express set and it is going well!
Ahh that's amazing - really hope you enjoy it!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Can you make a ranking book for pens and water towers?
haha I don't think so! ;D
the chain is supposed to be hooked onto a small eyelet at the tip of the arm/pipe that swivels around
Thanks for that Marie, I could try that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Wow that's a fine bit of kit isn't it Sam! Nice review mate
Thanks very much mate!! :D
Cool model, lots of fun! Can you switch off the vocals or edit the sound at all?
I remember building either a dapol or ratio GWR water tower when younger, good little kit plastic with brass ladders and fittings, it looked very similar.
Thanks very much! You can disconnect the speaker plug very easily, but I think the audio files are burned in permanently :(
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Completely the kind of animated contraption some crazy tech-nerd modellers may spend days to build, animate and add sounds to, so the bang for bucks value is pretty outstanding.
haha you're right - this makes things super easy!! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
hey sam, do you think it's wierd that the "great western freight" that you talked about in a model railway news comes with a coach, but the "mixed traffic" set doesn't?
Yes I do find that odd actually - very well spotted! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
any chance of looking at other model railway accessories like engine sheds, road vehicles, etc.
Yes I'd like that Barry - perhaps I'll try more! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam,
Have a look at the Train Tech RUclips post regarding automatic operation.
Fantastic, I'll look into that! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Idk why but the ending is like art.
haha the ending?! ;D
@@SamsTrains it was just the nice shot of engine and water tower.
@@onetrackmind3558 Ooh okay! Glad you liked that! :D
@@SamsTrains no problem
Definitley a nice bit of kit and not over priced.
Thanks mate - I thought so too! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Excellent review of the GWR water tower with sound plus voice Sam 👍👍
Are you going to review a Hornby GWR water tower as well other buildings in the near future?
Thanks very much Joe - I'm not sure about that, I'll look into it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
